Microsoft will omit anti-virus protection in Vista, the next version of Windows. Redmond is promoting Vista as a landmark improvement in Windows security. Yet Jim Allchin also told CRN in a recent interview that there will be no anti-virus software. For unspecified business (not technical) reasons, Microsoft will sell anti-virus protection to consumers through its OneCare online backup and security service.

as soon as you install an antiirus software it will begin uninstalling system applications and services
(much like M$'s av app did to IE)

Theres a few reasons I'd see why Microsoft didnt add Antivirus into Vista

1) Make more off selling antivirus online

2) Anti monopoly laws spring to mind, think back to Windows Media Player and such things

3) Added cost at their expense.

Frankly I'm glad Microsoft AntiVirus isnt in Vista, there's no way I'd use it! I can see it now, the Office Paper Clip comes up "Hey, it looks like you've got a virus!"

Still, I don't think it's a good idea for Microsoft to sell it's own antivirus. It opens up to many security liabilities. I mean MORE than what they have right now.

Still, OneCare Home sounds like more hand holding for people dumb enough to pay for it. Like AOL, some people want hand holding. They're going to end up making more money on subscription services.

I don't find this a big deal. I mean the OS isn't gonna need anti virus as soon as it comes out because there won't be any viruses out there. IMO anyway.

Yeah... ok.

didn't Microsoft say this new "OS" is completly redone. I'm not saying its going to be, but if it is then there should't be any viruses for it on the day it comes out. Possibly the following day though.

It doesn't take long to write a virus at all. Many are created by the same developers who make these operating systems. Of course they will never publicly claim that.

Will Vista be a 64bit OS or a 32bit OS, or will it come in both varieties?

Both 64 and 32bit versions.

I just read that features thing and now I am somewhat exicted about it. I probably won't get it though.

It seems everyone else sets the standard, and then MS has to catch up.

I HATE how it looks like OSX. I'm immediatly setting it to run display for effeicency and have the classic wondows look, but I'll leave that sidebar, it's a nice substitute for shortcuts which I keep to a minimum anyway.

Does EVERYTHING have to be glassey, see through, rounded edged, and circular? it's inefficeint and hurts your eyes.

Because orange and blue are totally visually neutral. Windows has always had a horrid interface.

point of interest, if you want nuetral colors, real edges and no fancy crap (circular buttons instead of squares and glassy edges with see through just to make it look like a Mac) and to save more than 2 megs of ram? Go into properties and configure display to run for efficency. it's just easier to look at for me. Everything is straightforward.

2 megs of RAM has you worried? Are you running on 128? :nono:

no I'm just anal retentive, I run 1024 megs DDR2, but I'm looking to upgrade.

so what's the Mac daddy running?

Moses

1.25GB. My PowerMac (2 years old) can only take 1.25GB. So I am relatively happy.

My windows XP home can only take 2 gigs but I still might try and make 3 gigs come the release of Windows Vista.

I'm just crazy enough to do it. And i'll plug in all my USB add-ons just to take advantage of the very slight increase vista offers like that.

I kind of wonder if Nintendo Revolution will take advantage of it's own Flash Memory modules the same way PCs do?
