View Full Version : Dell in search tests with Google
Computer-maker Dell is running tests with Google to see if it will install the firm's software on its products.
Dell said it was evaluating Google's search tools, both for the web and for documents stored on the PC.
The move would make Google the default search on millions of new computers, as it tries to expand its business and attract more users.
It also could help firms chip away at the dominant position of Microsoft, which is also developing search tools.
'Desktop search'
At the heart of Microsoft's success was its agreement with computer manufacturers to make its Windows software the default operating system on new PCs.
Once the software is on the computer, the majority of users do not bother with alternatives, analysts said.
Google is looking to tie up more agreements with manufacturers giving it greater access to computer users and revenues from advertisers.
The search firm already has deals with Hewlett-Packard, Gateway, Sony, Apple and Toshiba.
"We can confirm that we are running a test with Google that could include a Google-powered home page, Google desktop search and a Google Toolbar," said Dell spokesman Bob Kaufman.
No evidence
However, analysts said that Microsoft's position was not in immediate danger and the cost of having to tie in manufacturers may hamper Google's future profit growth.
"There is no serious evidence that [Microsoft's] franchise is actively being undermined in any material way at this point," said Charles Di Bona, an analyst at Sanford C Bernstein.
Google's shares have fallen since the firm disappointed Wall Street with its earnings report last week.
The stock dropped 4.5% to $367.92 on Tuesday.

I love them.

I love them.We had to get a hotfix for Windows Server 2003. Dell's site told us to go to Microsoft and Microsoft told us to go to Dell's. We ended up calling Microsoft and having the fix e-mailed to us.
That and Dell wouldn't replace a machine after sending a technician to replace the fan, CPU, and motherboard 3 times. They were going to do it a fourth when we TOLD them to just give us a new machine.

true but when you are(or work with) customer support everyday, you tend to see the bad grossly outweighing the good. There are many fundamental flaws, but I cannot go into specifics......

I hate the horror stories of a typical user making a call and not knowing any specifics about a problem. I mean other than the typical, it doesn't work.
I've had good support from Blackberry and some medical software companies. Then again I had a long list of issues and solutions that I had already checked off.
Apple seems to be good with their iPod support too. I got a new one just by proving them wrong.

I love Google and all but it would be a lot better to actually see some of these ideas take completed form.
Its kinda like the Intel based Mac's, you heard the rumors and snipets of info but it took forever to actually see one finally at this year's CES event.

So true. I saw a mocking website that called Google the top "Vaporware" product of the year, because of everything still in beta.

Same time frame. The point is it took forever for it to finally materialize despite having heard about it quite some time ago.

Yeah, even the main search page was in beta till 2004. I wonder if they're still really fixing that much stuff on the software, like the Gmail for instance which just got IM, or if thats their way of saying here's a great product but dont make any final judgements cause its still in "beta".

They actually rolled out some pretty heavy machines rather early. I would have thought minis and iBooks first. But hey they only officially announced it, what, 7 months ago?

I <3 Dell and I <3 Google.
And yeah, I always wondered why they never finish any of their products. Why is Gmail still in Beta, when everyone that wants access to it can have access, and its already the best web-based mail client out there?

The same thing happens with Korean games. They're 100% complete and work just fine. They're free but always stuck in a Beta version. That is until a publisher picks them up and they start charging you. Then it's on to the next big hit, rinse, and repeat.
