The environments in Final Fantasy XII are largely based on islands, with the colors orange and yellow prominently factoring into the game's overall presentation. Incorporating real-time 3D elements such as backgrounds also proved problematic for the development team. Speaking about the issue, supervisor Yoshida-san said the programmers have been restricted by the limits of the PlayStation 2 hardware including polygon processing throughout development. He went on to describe the world of Final Fantasy XII as much darker than previous installments in the series.

And there's still well over a year in it's lifespan. Tsk tsk.

They should just move it to Xbox. FFXII is online right? It would work well. But Square is so... square.

PS2 has been showing its limitations since launch.

True but this is coming from Square, the company that shunned the N64 for its 'limitations'.

PS2 has always shown the limitations of its capabilites when compared to GameCube or Xbox.

It's the fact that Sony is so popular because of Square and how they shunned Nintendo and the N64 because of it graphic 'limitations' (they couldn't add in all that FMV they wanted too) and how that almost single handedly put Sony on top and now hear they are complaining of sonys limitations.....the irony, the bittersweet irony. Now they just need to come to their senses and drop PS2 support and make games on a system with less graphic limitations, GC.

that is why i propose that we send a petition of some sort explaining to them why FF has to come to the cube.

To Ixion:

Final fantasy XII is not online, FF XI is online

The PS2, like all hardware, has limitations, but the sales are the primary driving force for a developer, and Playstation 2 offers that best.

Very true but back then at the time the N64 was selling as well and had the library to compete but Square changed all that with 1 game.

A lot of PS2 multiplatform games dont sell as well as some people think. Well the non sports games at least.

This game should have been a GC title just like some said. Why does square want to waste their nice software on the PS2?

First of all I think Square-Enix has droped the roman numeral thing for Final Fantasy 12(at least what I read in a magazine)
Secondly 12 will not be online to answer KamiKaZe's question.

the PS2 was released a good few years before the Xbox and GC. And you guys are whinging that a system created so long before the competition is inferior? Of course it's not up to the standards of the newer consoles. That's how Sony makes its money: releasing its consoles when there is no competition to it. PSX was out before N64, thus it creamed that. Sega tried to do it with Dreamcast, but failed miserably. PS2 was out long before Xbox went into production, and even longer before GC. If you expect the PS2 to automatically upgrade itself to keep up with the competition (albeit that would be a kickass idea) then definitely it's a failure.

I think it shows how well Sony have planned this. Two other systems clearly superior to the PS2 and it still has incredible consumer support. Congrats, Sony.

Actually I think it was only one year. And yes there was no need for Square to make 12 for ps2. 12 went into production long after xbox or GC were in production. I am not bashing the limitations of PS2 i am bashing square for allowing itself to program on a the inferior system.
