Rumors of a very expensive and delayed PS3 pushed down Sony stock 3.60% in Japan today.

The Merrill Lynch report which pegged the PS3 as a $900 machine (with optional $100 hard drive included) that might be delayed 6-12 months from its long-touted Spring 2006 release window has begun to cost Sony some serious cash in its corporate valuation.

Sony skeptics might find this cause for cheer, but it's not currently known (outside of Sony, of course) what the components of its upcoming system currently cost and what they will eventually go for as the PS3 gets closer to launch... whenever that is. At any rate, Sony evangelists with a little cash of their own might consider this an interesting time to pick up the stock when it's down--if they're as bullish about the stock's future prospects as they are about the game/chip/disc platform. [Sorry, stock watchers, but we're not actual financial advisors, so please don't take this hypothetical situation as professional advice.

in the long run this could be serious for Sony. I could put my own spin on the topic of rumours of this kind and why they are valuable to the right people, but i'll leave that to you. Many companies have been brought down by rumours of this sort. Anger and Passion are intrinsically linked. take away the anger and lethergy will follow. i agree largely with the argument that we should keep these threads clean of brand stomping and acrimony, but sometimes to discuss issues without getting passionate and, yes, angry would be a sterile affair. in parliament ministers on opposite sides of the house destroy each other at the dispatch box, but when the smoke clears and the issues have been thrashed out they share a brandy and cigar. when boxers have finished pummeling each other and a victor is decided they shake hands and acknowlege their opponents ability. this is how it works in a mature culture. so rather than abolish this sort of thing entirely, i would allow a small percentage through.

Sony's stock is generally fine , no need to go into panic mode over this over at Sony investor relations. The stock's had a big run-up over the past few months and this correction - whether triggered by ML's report or not - is probably for the best. The shares are still in the vicinity of a three-year high.

i agree its not that serious for Sony 'yet'. but if the rumours are the reason for the fall it shows graphically the power of rumour and in turn gives us another reason to doubt them. which is effectively a good thing i suppose. i sense something dark beneath the surface though and those utilizing such tactics count on well rounded people to dispel such things as sensationalism.

PS3 was never meant to be out when they said it was. Sony rushed out an E3 model and videos to try and steal attention from 360 (which surprised everyone by coming out so early), it worked mind.

Sony just kept saying Spring to keep people from buying 360, by the time they admit it won't be out this year, most people may as well just wait til 2007 anyway, if they'd have known it was to be 2007 his time last year, they'd have boughht a 360 by now.

i think your probably right about this one but i still think it will release late 2006. the problem as i see it though is that in the mean time, if shareholders get tetchy it will put more pressure on Sony to release as early as possible which could ultimately mean a slightly rushed machine. nothing drastic, just more machines that crash n burn. something Sony will be keen on avoiding.

Are You sure ? I thought people are buying consoles to play games, not to posess a box with a nice logo....

This is exactly the logic MS execs were driven to rush X360 to the market - 'If we are the first, people must buy our product'

Sony has always been timely with their console releases. Just about all of the devs are backing a 2006 release, some are even saying spring, albeit a hot one. As I've said before, they have had 5 years to throw this thing together, so why are you so certain of a delay, when all the evidence suggests against it. The only thing that has even threatened to hold things up are the unfinished parts of the blu-ray standard, which are now no longer a threat. So, you can speculate all you want, but I'll stick with the more in formed insiders for the source of my info.

Yes, just like Nintendo does. But as people believe them, they don't deserve better anyway. Right???

Now is actually a good time for investors to buy some lower than usually priced Sony stock. It's sure to rocket up some at GDC and E3 so buy now while it's artificially low.

I don't know about lower than 'usual' though - we're still talking about ~3 year highs here; this dip in stock price just takes it back to late January levels.

Maybe, if you could find one in the stores!

If the stock keeps sliding, we may hear from Sony, on a big scale about the PS3, sooner rather than later, to allay fears from investors. Go investors, ask for answers...get us the goods!!!

I don't understand the "delayed into 2007" ideas. I guess it's possible, but Sony would be foolish to miss a second holiday season against 360. Late November at the absolute latest. Just think about it. I'd rather release the PS3 sans some of the bells and whistles in late 06 than miss another holiday season. You think stocks went down a lot the other day, just imagine the hit on that news. Maybe it'll be delayed in Europe until 07, but I would be stunned if the two major markets didn't have PS3 in 06...

Anyway, if the recent stock downtick shows us anything it's that Sony has allowed an info vacuum big enough post E3 for doubt to creep in. It behooves Sony to start the steady, positive leak of info soon... Just look at the negativity on the boards. Maybe Sony doesn't have finished software to show, but send the devs out to give positive interviews. It's time to start that PR wheel spinning again...

With the stock course dip happening because of the rumours or not, I find it difficult to understand why any gaming site would start to spread this kind of news from stock exchange market in the first place. Stock exchange happens all the time, any news, either positive or negative change stock courses, people buy company's stocks when they hear good news, sell when they hear or sense/analyse bad news. It, for crying out loud, should have nothing to do with gaming or gaming communities and fans of certain brand.

this is more of a general Sony topic than a specific PS3 one. moving to General Sony.
