February 11, 2003 - Micro Forte has announced that they will be allowing early access to BigWorld, their highly anticipated Massively Multiplayer Online Technology, to select developers. Why should you care? Because Microsoft will be using the technology in a mysterious, unnamed MMORPG.
Of course, Micro Forte was working on a project called Citizen Zero for the PC before Microsoft bought them out, which is likely one and the same as the aforementioned mystery title.
BigWorld reportedly allows millions of people to play in the same world simultaneously and, according to a press release by the company "provides action game style interaction with high level of detail over low bandwidth connections."
"Providing fast, smooth game-play, while keeping the bandwidth costs low was one of our key objectives," said Simon Hayes, CTO and chief architect of BigWorld Technology. "Our sophisticated and highly efficient load balancing allows thousands of players to come together, to play epic battles and attend grand weddings." Oh boy, maybe they'll finally make a game based on my favorite daytime television show, TLC's "A Wedding Story." Hopefully you'll be able to feed rice to pigeons and watch them explode.
We'll have more information on BigWorld as well as Microsoft's mystery MMORPG as it becomes available.
