View Full Version : UNMB Live: Ultimate Nintendo MailBag Volume 10!!
BlueMax
11-24-2003, 04:04 AM
Hello and welcome to the UNMB. This is a very special volume because this is the 10th UNMB. Since its beginning the UNMB has answered 100s and 100s of questions and received 1000s of views. What makes the UNMB so unique is that it is a live mailbag. That means anyone can send in questions in this thread as long as its on topic, and get an answer quick. The UNMB was the first live game mailbag on the net. Feel free to ask any questions on GCN, GBA, release dates, set up, opinions, Nintendo misc, and game industry info. The UNMB is hosted by yours truly, Blue Max, aka Mach Rider, aka David G. The UNMB provides an unparalled service to its readers by letting everyone get a chance to write and by answering questions quick, sometimes in right after the question is asked. Each volume of UNMB lasts 2 weeks. That means this volume will end the Saturday after next. If your new to the Nnow forums, this is a great place to get your questions answered. Also since this is the 10th volume, I'm planning on having something special so look out for that. Around the end of the 1st week I will reveal a new Theme Question like "Whats your favorite sports game?" or something that you can answer. I might even make another contest soon so look for that too. I'd like to thank everyone who has participated in the UNMB in the past...I love helping people out with questions and things.
Finally, get ready for the UNMB to make an even bigger splash soon on a grander scale.
So send in your questions...Make sure they're on topic. For now only post questions no comments thanks.
You do Know one anniversary is equal to one year right, and you do know that UNMB hasnt been around for ten years right? Anyways let me stop before you start crying to the mods and begging them to ban me for making a comment im free to make.

What is known about The Legend of Zelda: Tetra's Trackers, and what is a good estimate for its release date?
KamiKaZe

i have a question, why would u even care about tetra's trackers unless you were like 5 yrs old??
^Maybe because I dont know anything about it you jackass c0ck beater.
BlueMax
11-24-2003, 05:26 AM
OK here's the scoop on Tetra's Trackers.
It's basically just a scavenger hunt with little 2d Links. The graphics look similar to Four Swords. Each player uses a GBA to control their character. A 3d Tetra gives you a cool map and some objectives to complete. You have to run around and find pirates and collect stamps.
It really doesn't sound to interesting to me. Nintendo hasn't said a single word about a release date yet. Though because it's a simple scavenger hunt, there is no way Nintendo would release this as a stand-a-lone title. They would have to be insane if they did. Expect to either A) see combined with Four Swords and then sold at a discount price, B) see it used as a promotional item like bundling with the GCN or with a reserve deal for a game, C) see it combined with several misc Zelda mini games or what have you, or D) some mixture of one of the above.
Alright next question??
Oh I'm going to be heading out for a business conference in Orlando tomorrow morning. I shouldn't be back until Wednesday afternoon. So feel free to post your questions while I'm gone. I may be able to get a chance to answer a few during the conference but I highly doubt it. But you can still put your qs in here and they'll be waiting for me when I get back. I've got some people that will be monitoring the UNMB in my absence. They may want to answer some of your Qs themselves, but I'll still give you my answer too.
Thanks and have fun while I'm gone.
I may be able to take one more Q if its asked in like the next 4 minutes.

Where will Mario and Peach spend Thanksgiving this year? If at her castle, will the in-laws be there? I bet she has annoying parents. Does peach make dressing worth eating? She doesnt even look like she can cook a turkey, though I bet her desserts are good...
yeah, i bet her desserts are good too :p
blueduck, can you give me any info on that nintendo breakfast cereal from the 80's?
BlueMax
11-27-2003, 02:42 AM
Well I just got back from my convention in Orlando. Between the convention, malls, entertainment, fun, and my visit with n-Space I guess its safe to say my trip was well spent.
Yep I went to n-Space HQ the guys that made Duke Nukem, Die Hard Trilogy, Rug Rats, Danger Girls, and more...but most importantly the makers of the upcoming Geist only for the Nintendo GameCube. I learned a lot of cool things that no one in the gaming press has learned. I saw Geist in development. I learned a lot of awesome things about what n-Space has in store and more. But because Nintendo is the publisher, n-Space is not allowed to release info to the press. The producer told me they could get in really big trouble if I were to reveal some of the things I saw and learned on the Internet. Thus my lips are sealed. I will keep my word and avoid putting n-Space in an awkward situation.
Just know that since I am a staff member at NintendoNow, a Nnow staff member has done what none of the other gaming press mags or sites have done.
OK...
back to UNMB 10th Volume business.
I see there's been a few questions while I was gone. I will update the U Bag with some answers soon so look out for that. Also I will now reveal the UNMB Live: Volume 10's Theme Question. The ThemeQ is: Its time to be thankful. What are you thankful for? Also is there something gaming related your thankful for?
Now you can start sending in more questions as well as your ThemeQ Answers..
Ok so get going..
And have a happy Thanksgiving

PSO Episode III is a little similar to Lost Kingdoms in its battle system.
In PSO you have Hunters and Arks. Hunters use Item Decks. These contain weapons like swords, brands, etc. Arks use Enemy Decks. Enemy decks summon monsters to do the fighting.
You fight on a grid similar to a chess board. First you have to roll dice using the A button. Then you plan your card strategy out. Then you plan your character's movements for that particular turn. Finally you select a target to attack and then you let loose either your item or monster.
Peasant, I think Mario and Peach arent spending Thanksgiving together this year. Rumor has it that Mario took his private jet for a surprise visit to Bowser's castle to rally the Koopa troops...
Peach makes a mean peach cobbler though.

Oops I forgot about your question Dork....
OH you mean this beast? http://www.hallelnet.com/von/alllinks/nes_cereal.jpg
What a classic little cereal.
I used to eat that stuff all the time.
This amazing breakfast food was
released in 1989 to both popular and critical acclaim. Nintendo
revolutionized the industry with its "dual bag" cereal system; on
one side you had the "fruity" Super Mario Bros. cereal, on the
other, you had the "berry" Legend of Zelda cereal. They tasted
rather like Trix
Yep good times indeed....
Next UNMB question or ThemeQAnswer to What are you thankful for??
Where will Mario and Peach spend Thanksgiving this year? If at her castle, will the in-laws be there? I bet she has annoying parents. Does peach make dressing worth eating? She doesnt even look like she can cook a turkey, though I bet her desserts are good...

Ok you saw geist, and you can't tell us some things about it, thats cool but maybe you can answer this.
Will there be cutscenes?
Will there be a co op mode?
Is online even being discussed?
Did you play it?
Are there vehicles?
Any thing else you can tell us would be great. I am really looking forward to this game.
NukeBlaze nice joke....actually the questions are legit...save for one or two here or there. See the thing is even though the UNMB has been around for a while now and had several questions asked and 1000s of views, a couple people still dont take it serious because they're not sure about a forums based Live mailbag. Its basically never done before. But again there's only just a few people. There are a lot of people newbies and regulars a like that enjoy the UNMB. And I will continue to provide this service for NintendoNow. I spend a lot of time answering questions and helping people out...why? because I enjoy informing people and helping them out...so to I think I deserve some respect for that.
Things will only continue to improve and prosper once the official UNMB for NintendoNow's main site launches.....
Ok I forgot to answer you NoteDog...
I cant give away much...It simply wouldnt be fair to n-Space. They gave me a special tour and sneak peak at stuff no one else in the gaming press has seen.
Yes, there will be cut scenes
Co op, I cant tell you that one
no online
Thats all I can say...I learned some stuff that goes way beyond just Geist stuff. Its looking really good though. The soundtrack is great...its like techno/thriller kinda like Spy Games. I dont want to say much more than that right out on a public access forum on the Internet.
Well hmm there is something about the GBA SP but Im walking on a thin line Im going to stop now....

Whats the word on Mother 1 & 2 making its way to the states?
How about Mother 3?
Peasant, I don't know Harry Potter was PRETTY huge back then...
Oh and Nintendo always counts bundled like SMB1 as units sold.
After seeing great sales in Japan when Mother was released over there, there's a good chance will see it over here. Again, Nintendo could shy out on us, but judging from Miyamoto's response to the StarManNet petition to bring Mother back to the USA, chances are they're already hard at work on a stateside release.
As for Mother 3....no one knows.........so I'm not going to make up something.

Why does Nintendo shaft the GCN rpg's in favor of the GBA?
err, at least in North America.
ex. Japan gets the popular Fire Emblem series, meanwhile north American GCN is STARVING for rpg's... we have 1 good one (SOA:L) and NOTHING ELSE... so what do they do? give us a gba game, and characters in SSBM..
same w/ Golden Sun...
why would Nintendo not bring their first party rpg's to the GCN in NA?
Notedog
12-02-2003, 11:00 PM
What is N space like? How many people are on the team? Whats the games budget? What do you have to say about the team as a whole in your own opinion?
Nintendo has always released 2d Fire Emblem games. Thats why the new Fire Emblem game ended up on the GBA. Nintendo knows that the GBA is a great platform to release RPGs on. Also a lot of the RPGs for the GBA have been remakes or ports.
But don't give up on the GameCube's RPG outlook yet. We are about to receive a wave of excellent RPG games on the GCN. Here's a few: Pokemon Coliseum (they spell it incorrectly), Tales of Symphonia (this game is a masterpiece, trust not only the reviews but me cause I went to Japan and saw it), Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Custom Robo, Virtua Fighter: Cyber Generation, Baiten Kaitos, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life, MegaManX: Mission Command, Sega's Island of Kaiju (or whatever), Giftpia, Paper Mario, and Xmen Legends.
Also I've heard talk of a possible Fire Emblem and Golden Sun RPG for the Cube.
Things are definately looking good.
So what do you have to say about those games coming?
As for Nintendo's weird ways...thats just Nintendo.
N-Space was really cool. They've got a nice sized office in a business park in Orlando. When you walk in, you can see different plaques, posters, cardboard stand up of Duke Nukem and Rugrats, and a Sega atcade machine (the first game N-Space worked on).
I went into the conference room where I talked with the producer for about an hour. I asked a lot of good questions about a lot of things like misconceptions about n-space, misconceptions about Nintendo, which was their fave console, if they were 2nd party or not, history of n-Space, PS2, Xbox, next consoles, Geist, and a lot more. I then went around for a tour and got to meet the staff. They're a great studio and I can assure you that they've got some awesome things in store with Geist and beyond. And no, they're not a 2nd party of Nintendo.
I'm not really going to say much more on a public access forum like this. Its really a whole different ball game when Nintendo is the publisher that takes care of press relations. It was pretty cool getting to see and learn things no one else in the gaming press has.
OH I think they have about 40 people or so, but I can't remember the exact number.

They told me they simply threw pitched their new game Geist to several publishers and Nintendo was the one that grabbed it. Miyamoto has come to their offices once, but other than that they've been taking care of the dev. themselves. Geist will be only for Nintendo GameCube. After that I cannot comment.
Im not a Nintendo representative but those games all qualify you for receiving the Zelda Disk. You might have made a mistake or your comp made an error. Or maybe you did it right...I guess maybe you could try again just to be on the safe side.
Firefly, a lot of places consider those games RTS. I know they're not quite like WarCraft, but several companies have them listed as RTS.

I dont know what warlocked is, but the other 2 are not rts.
rts = starcraft, age of empires, command and conquer, etc.\
I know what your talking about Peasant...I have a comp with those games....
I have just seen several companies like EB, Babbages, Walmart, and several online retailers refer to those games as forms of RTS...
It doesnt really matter what you call them...the fact is the GBA is scarce of RTS....the same can be said about the consoles.

well regardles of what Walmart thinks (really, Walmart?) Advance Wars is not a RTS. rts = real time strategy. Advance wars is not real time. in an rts, if you put it down and grab a bite to eat you are screwed. Advanced wars is a turn based game... its closer to a god-game like civilization or alpha centauri....
speaking of Advance wars, I bet little people know that it is a port of a NES game, which oddly enough wasnt nearly as popular as the GBA game... do you know what it was called machrider? I played it hella back in the day... I think it was called Tank Wars, but im absolutely not sure...
Yeah The NES Wars game was actually called Famicom Wars. Later on came Super Famicom Wars for the Super Famicom. Both of these titles were Japan Only games.

I found a RTS game, its called Mech Platoon or something. By the way, what do you know about Motorola's wireless link or Triton Labs' Stealth link?
Nintendo's wireless link is supposed to be included for free with the Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green. According to Nintendo, "Motorola will be supplying the wireless technology for the launch. The new wireless Gameboy using 2.4GHz radio frequency (RF) chipset enables up to five players to play each other wirelessly, allowing for flexible, mobile game playing............The Motorola chipset contains a 32-bit RISC architecture baseband processor and a power-saving RF transceiver in the globally available 2.4GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical Band spectrum. This technology offers robust performance with a high-speed data rate, utilizing a TDMA (time division multiple access) communication protocol to provide game users a fast receive-and-respond capability similar to a wired experience. Motorola’s chipset also features radio signal interference prevention and low power consumption ensuring users a long battery life for extended game play. In addition, advanced technology and packaging techniques of the solution allow for integration, reducing the size of the Nintendo wireless adapter accessory for convenient mobility."
The Stealth Link is a 2.4GHz device that allows people to link their GBAs without cords. The range of play is said to be about 100 feet. The Stealth Link uses BlueTooth technology. You can even play through walls. Its supposed to be priced at around 30 or 40 bucks.

I'm sorry Machrider but you are wrong here.
12 years ago, I was at my mommy's house playing this game on my NES. No import, English characters, no "famicom" in the title. There absolutely was an American version.... I cant remember what iw as called... it was NOT called NES Wars.. Tank Wars is the only thing that sticks in my head...
Peasant, there's no need for you to try to argue with me. You've been mistaken. The Console Wars (FAMICOM-GBA) never came to America until Advance Wars came out for the GBA. The games before that were Japan only games. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. Here I even found a site so you can have proof: http://www.classicgaming.com/nindb/nes_famicom-wars.shtml

lLook, I played the game and remember it very vividly. dont start. I didnt say it was made by the same people... maybe it wasnt. However the people that made it must have ripped off the makers of famicom wars, because it was ALMOSt exactly the same... you moved units (groups of 10 - tanks, infantry, transports, bombers, fighters, etc) across a grid, and when you fought it brought up the same damn screen
(10 units attacks, the losers "fell off" like in advance wars)...
damnt... do you know where this is a list of all NES games with some info on them? pictures would help. I will peruse and see if I can find the game I am talking about...
Don't start what?
Im just giving people the facts and setting the record straight. If you've got a problem with that...well oh well. You told me I was wrong when I said the Advance Wars' predecessor was the Famicom Wars game. I was simply talking about the Wars series. I wasnt talking about any other game series. I never said you were fibbing about that game you saw... I was merely saying it wasn't the Advance Wars' predecessor, Famicom Wars. Also it isn't Tank Wars because thats a cell phone game.
I'm sure you'll find the game your thinking of...I never said there arent any tank/battle/war strategy games for NES in America. Heres a little list I found over at the G-Spot....it's got basically all the NES games. They dont have much info for some of the games listed, but it might be helpful. If you want me to help out more...it'd be helpful if you could find the name of the company that made it. There's a way better list of Nintendo developed/published games here: http://www.planetnintendo.com/nindb/nes/index.shtml
But if the game your thinking of isn't made by Nintendo, the second link won't help you too much.
yeah I've got to get back to focusing on UNMB questions...so anyways I hope that helps you.
Ok moving right along....

What's the deal with Pacman Vs. ? Why aren't there any reviews for it, how can we get it and when?
Namco just recently announced that Pacman VS has been shipped. You can get it several ways. It comes with the Player's Choice PacMan Worlds 2. You can also get if you buy R:Racing Evolution. Finally, if you pre-order I-Ninja you will get Pacman VS.

1080 or ssx3?
Hey its closed guy....
You've reached the UNMB offices after our normal business hours. Please try again during our normal business hours during th------------Just kidding..
I'll make an acception since you asked it right after I ended the this volume.
I'd have to say SSX3 simply because it has higher quality and replay value. But 1080 is really good too.
So yeah look out for Volume 11, its going to be huge!
