Is getting an Overclocked version of the card worth the money?
http://www.macotechnology.com.au/products.asp?cat=Video%20Card&pid=2232&pdone=1&showpd=0&showpd2=0&showpd3=PCIE%207800
This is something that i ran into, and its only $500 australian. Does anyone know if this is a good deal? At www.staticice.com if you search for '7800 gt' the lowest is like $440, and that isnt overclocked.
Im still not 100% sure on what card to get. Im maybe 90% sure that I want a 7800gt card, but i dont know what one to get.
thanks in advance

That is a very nice card, and a pretty good price, probably worth it for the extra 60 bucks, I would probably get it, It is a good card, you will get maybe 2-4 FPS better than a normal 7800gt (also it has a good bundle and a copper cooler), if you are planning on overclocking DONT go for it.
EDIT, seriously you will regret it if you go for anything less than the 7800GT, they are a great card at a very good price

Theres no way I personally would overclock something, im too scared i would screw it up. And yeh, I know that if i get something less then ill regret it... I may aswell spend alot of money now and get it over and done with.
And also yeh, the 7900 would be way too expensive, and will most likely not come out in australia for ages since we get shafted for everything
edit: I fail to see any games that come bundled with it. :( Oh well...

the review links on xfx's website:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1848573,00.asp
it says "MotoGP 2, X2: The Threat, and Far Cry"
http://www.avault.com/hardware/getreview.asp?review=xfx7800gt&page=1
also says this
if you cant afford it you wont miss much extra, you probably wont notice the difference unless you compare them side-by-side
EDIT: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=7800gt MSY have it for REALY CHEAP (their website looks realy dodgy but they are fine, they have numerous shopfronts but have a tendency to not pick up the phone according to the australian whirlpool forums (i am a member))

Hmm, can you post the stats on it. I have (I think to be) overclocked 7800GT I'll find my specs. and post them tomorrow. I only paid $396 for mine and I also got a free 64bit mobo w/SLI. (Tho I doubt you need a mobo if your the guy who bought the fulgy dell :D)

sucks. then I would say no on that card, since all I know atm it could be a stock card with a "cool heat snyc." on it.

No it is overclocked
1000mhz to 1050mhz memory
400mhz to 450mhz core (even faster than my GTX)

oh ok, finally stats!
Yeah still slower than mine i guess just did a search on newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130256
Memory Clock 1100MHz
Core clock 450MHz
I dont know if $285.00 is alot when you convert it to aussie but thats quite cheap for a vid card with better stats than that overclocked one. but thinking about it is priced for downunder.

^Hmm... It will still take ages for them to come out in Australia, and thus will take ages for a price drop of the 7800gt. I dont wanna have to wait ages. :(
I spose I can wait till Oblivioin comes out. I really want to play that game with nice graphics.

Rest assured, with a 7800GT you will enjoy those graphics but realistically if you cant afford the 7900 series dont go for it, in a couple of months after it's release it will be suppassed, just like every component in a PC.
PS, would you mind posting the specs to your PC?

-Dual 3ghz processor (or dual 3.2ghz, i forgot)
-2 gig of ram
-250gig harddrive
-and i think the card i have atm is an ATI X600 or something.
is that all? i get the feeling i missed something important... (of course there are the other things in there, like 2 dvd drives, one which burns dvds... but you know)

That looks perfectly fine for a 7800GT!, do you have any info on your Motherboard?
SuperLuigiBros
03-09-2006, 06:04 AM
no sorry. but in case your wondering, the slot it PCI-e because thats what my card atm is. I also have a 19inch screen. yay. and surround sound. and like, lots of other 1337 stuff. (except for a 1337 card, hence this thread)

OK a 7800GT should work with your system nicely.
The overclocked version of the card would be great but it realy is your decision.
SuperLuigiBros
03-09-2006, 06:13 AM
So you think i should go with the overclocked one? Im fine with spending that much money, but is it worth the extra... however much is it extra?
Garfunkel
03-09-2006, 06:31 AM
well it depends how you look at things, it may give you a couple of frames boost like say a game is running at 49 FPS on a normal 7800gt, it will probably go 52-53 FPS on this overclocked 1, if you believe it is worth it, go for it!
SuperLuigiBros
03-09-2006, 06:36 AM
well that doesnt seem like much... but meh, might aswell. :)

Agreed, it is not much but if you are prepared to buy it there is no harm in doing so.
Hope you enjoy it!

I just called up the shop. Theyre going to call me when the 7900gt arrives in 2 days.
Yes, the 7900gt, not the 7800gt. Thanks to ^this guy. Everyone should +rep him, for he knows his stuff.
I cant wait for it. Im gonna do some 1337 before and after screenshot comparisons of FEAR. I would prefer to use FarCry, but I cant get screenshots from that game. :(
But i think ive already said this.
