Is that in any way possible without purchasing a new chip?

Yes I know it is a stupid question but you tech-gods out there might speculate on a way to do this in the [near] future.

Any ideas/theories?

well supposedly there is the one "spu" thats non active in the cell provided in the PS3 , so there is the possibility to activate it with an update by sofware i guess. But i think someone mentioned its inactive due to yields and chances are that there'd be more than a few defective ones out ther that wouldnt be ableto be updated if that was the case. (this is just my random speculation, im no techie lol )

The PS3 will not receive upgrades outside of you choosing to get a bigger HDD. Which does however lead to the question of: will the PS3 even HAVE an expansion port? I know we've all seen the back of the system and all the ports it does have.. is there another specific one? kinda like almost every system before? I think any peripherial would go through the USB to add additional features, but no actual hardware change abilities...

the boney king of nowhere.

i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that the hdd will be upgradeable (i'll try and find it again, but apologies if i can't) and as lekko said, it doesnt look likely with the ps3 that we have seen pictures of... does this mean it will be getting a bit of a redesign????

Yes the PS3 will be upgraded. No not as in specifications, but in dimension. In several years time there will be a PSthree that will astound and amaze us with 75% less space, like they have done several times already.

I wonder if they are going to somehow put a video in port. They better if they're thinking about making the PS3 a DVR too. But the only upgrades for the system will be peripherials or software. not hardware.

actually it will be possible to make minor upgrades technically in the form of firmware updates just like the psp has beem updated but i would not get too excited as the hardware itself cannot be upgraded except for the hdd of course unless they were to allow memory upgrades but i doubt that.

The core components will never be upgraded (Cell, RSX). The whole point of a console is to have a standard platform on which the games run...As far as PSThree goes, that's not an upgrade, they will just figure out how to manufacture it more efficiently, there will be no upgrade.

the only thing to be upgraded is the HDD. and yes, look at the sides of the console to see where the HDD slot is.
