Everytime I run the Disk Utility, it stops and can't complete because of the following error:

Eh, I've been hearing about a batch of these lately. Boot off of your OS X Tiger disc and repair disc permissions using the boot copy of Disk Utility. As always. Backup BEFORE you do that. You might need to reinstall OS X.

I'm thinking about just re-installing OS X after backing everything up like you said. I hope there's nothing wrong with the HDD.

Try doing what Eidorian said, just Repair Disk first, not Permissions. If all else fails, you have Apple Care... right...?

Did it work?
Usually it means time to break out the 6pin to 6pin and backup.

Usually it means time to break out the 6pin to 6pin and backup.I'm backing up my stuff as we speak at breakneck 2MB/sec speeds (hence my other thread). I can't wait to build my new comp. This is ridiculous. It took me 8 hours to transfer 20GB of stuff. Luckily I don't have much more to back up.

It's a USB 2.0 hard drive and this computer only has USB 1.0 ports. "That is why we use FireWire" isn't the moral of the story. The problem is the computer. I was 30 bucks short of the USB 2.0/FireWire version of this drive at the time of purchase. I needed it immediately though, so I don't feel bad about the purchase.
