i was just wondering that because the ps3 has HDD is this because the bluray is still on the slow side?

this'll get a few nails bitten. perhaps out technical friends can clarify a few things on this point. this could enable Sony to have a slower version of BD installed and i would imagine cheaper (technos help me out here) so its well worth considering with price being the only speculative subject left.

That could be it, but seeing as how the PS3 will be delayed until Nov. I was thinking their might be a fairly fast drive in it.

what would be an acceptable FAST 4x speed.

It depends on what time-frame PS3 is going to be mass-produced this year.
my guess is: PS3 wont get a Blu-Ray drive faster then 3x if its mass produced by august ( they need to start right away to meet Worldwide launch )

Difference that should be noted in a DVD vs Blu-ray discussion is that DVD's are Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) and Blu-ray is Constant Linear Velocity (CLV).
This is important to note because each of DVD's X ratings have a minimum and a maximum read speed and the advertised read speed is taken from the maximum, consequently a DVD drives maximum read speed is almost never realized. On the other hand Blu-ray's only has one constant read speed.
At 2x Blu-ray can read as fast as 12x DVD's minimum read speed. At just 3x Blu-ray is comparable to DVD at 12x; through the first half of the disc 3x Blu-ray is faster, through the second half of the disc 12x DVD is faster. And at only 4x Blu-ray manages to best a 12x DVD's maximum read speed by 9%.
All that coupled with the ability to cache data on the HDD... load times won't be a problem guys. It is known that Blu-ray drives need to be at least 2x (1.5x) to read blu-ray movies at the data rate of 54 MBPS. So, judging by the above quote, 2x will only be marginally slower, wheras 3x should be about equal, without even taking the HDD into consideration.

If they have a slow BD drive, that will still mean long load times. Though having a hard drive would mean streaming at least would be comparatively quick. For quick seeks and fast access times and streaming throughput, all modern hard drives will outperform all optical drives.

At 2x Blu-ray can read as fast as 12x DVD's minimum read speed.
I wouldn't call the minimum Blu-Ray transfer rate slow... with the things quoted in my above post taken into consideration.

Word on the street is developers were told to anticipate 10X DVD speed for game development. Based on some of the comments above that would support 2X or possibly a 3X speed Blue Ray drive.
This questions has been a concern for me from day one...
The PS3 needs to have fast load times or at least be on par with 360 speeds.
I would like to see a 4X BD speed since the console is being release after the 360 and has superior technology under the hood. I still doubt we will see 4X speeds based on console cost and if they are including a hard drive it's a pipe dream to anticipate anything faster than 3X speeds.
If we see a PS3 with a 4X BD & 60G HDD for a $399 price tag, I would slap my mamma to get one... (I hope my mom doesn't visit this forum...) Peace.

i would expect a 3x drive, load times should not be a problem

they won't be even at 2x.

how did they tell them to make it for X speed DVD if they announced that ALL PS3 games will be on BD?

aah, you might want to think that one over. that is what I did to get a Phantom. moma dearest pulled the plung on the whole project...and put me in I.C.U for six months.

he probably meant it was a compareable speed.

Also, I believe that the 10x speed was taken from an article, concerning a devkit. The developers told the magazine that they had a 10x DVD-drive in their devkit, and had been told to aim for that speed.

Blu-ray 2x: 72Mbp / 8MBps (this is what is in PS3, or at least 1,5x, inorder to play 54 mbps blu-ray movies)
12x DVD: 66 - 132Mbps / 8.2 - 16.5MBps "Note the latter speed is almost never achieved"
Blu-ray 3x: 108Mbps / 13.5MBps
12x DVD: 66 - 132Mbps / 8.2 - 16.5MBps "Same as above"

Perhaps Sony can release a slower drive initially and rely more heavily on caching data from the hard drive, and in a later model PS3 release a faster drive and cut down on load times tremendously, maybe to spur more sales for the PSthree.
