View Full Version : Windows doesn't recognize my CD drives
I mentioned this in another thread, but haven't really aggressively tried to fix it until now (i actually use my disc drives surprisingly sparingly).
anyways, a while ago windows spontaneously stopped recognizing my disc drives. i can't figure out what to do. any ideas? i know for a fact they're still hooked up properly.
the error message is below. i get the same message for all the drives (the two middle drives in the list are emulated drives).

send antrhax letter to Bill...switch to Linux....that is all!
(or you could try and update your dirvers)
it says that it has the best drivers available.

agreed
or maybe there is something wrong in bios (doubt it)?
I had this problem so long ago, but i cant remember exactly how i fixed it.

biosgood point
does the bios see the drives, you could have a MB issue or even a cable issue.
See if BIOS sees the drives, if not change your cables, then try again

Possibility 1, Your disc drive is dead.
Possibility 2, Try using AutoFix (http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C680A7B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en)
Possibility 3, you've installed some programs that conflict with the disc drive, such as roxio, nero, sonic etc. you will need to go into the registery and delete the upperfilters and or lowerfilters, You might get a popup message when you start up windows saying "CD Recording Software Will Cause Windows to Become Unstable" error message when you start Windows XP". Here (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315345) are instructions on how to fix this
Possibility 4: Very similar to Possibility 3, and similar way to remove it: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320553
Well, I did your step 4, standarsh, and i disabled the two emulated drives and then restarted. i don't know which of those fixed it, but they're working again.
thanks for the help, all.

Well I'm glad you have fixed that problem, don't be surprised if you need to reinstall one of your burning programs.
All the best

I was just kidding. There are times when the default Windows software will suffice. I prefer Nero most of the time, though.
