I had to reinstall Windows XP the other day, and now when I go to put my computer on standby, the button is grayed out. Only shut down and restart are available. Wtf?

Display, driver, missing. (Make sure it is the correct one, regardless update it)
Chipset, drivers, missing. (Same as above caption)
You have a grey scale monitor.

These are the three possible reasons.

My computer / My computer Properties / device tab / device manger / look around.

Right go to : Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - System - Hardware -Device Manager.

Now that your there, look for devices with"!" beside them. They stand out really well.

No exclamation points I can see, and none under any of the sub headings.

You are missing display adapters. Are you running an inbuilt video card?

Its probably under your other devices (things windows detects installed but does not have the drivers - hence does not know what it is).

And if that's the case, what do I do?

In hardware manager your video card is located under the "Unknown Devices" entry.

Regardless, if you do indeed have a GEforce 4 card, this should be the only item you need if everything else is in order. Download and install.

I want more information from your system please.

Right-click on my computer and go to properties. Then get me a snapshot of the "general Tab". Also, go back to hardware manager and click the "+" to expand the "System Devices" entry. Get me a snap shot those entries as well.

Why? I want to check the following from this information:

Do you have windows SP2 installed.
Do you have the correct Chipset software loaded.

If those condition are met, go forth and download the display driver here.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21.html

If those condition are not met, you are advised to get Service Pack two for windows XP first.
The download weighs in at 270 MB and can be found below.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?DisplayLang=en&FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a

And you should download the latest chipset software. Please locate this information if possible.

56 K note: Anything you download here , put in a folder and BURN to a CD for furture referance when we are done.

Please also find out any information regarding your system. If you got this system from a company, please state that company and your PC model name/number.

If it is a custom set, please find your motherboard model/brand. Customer PCs usually state this on thier order forms.

most likey you have an intel 845 motherboard, but I need either verification, or a re-information.

Sounds like you are off to a good start so far (downloading SP1) and the screen shots really help when trouble shooting. Let us know once you finish your DL.

Eh, busy busy. Yourself?

Very busy here too, especially these last two weeks. World wide database failures, patch files, etc. Whew, be glad once that is over.
