I've Googled this to death and didn't come up with any good answers. We have a user here that has his user profile revert itself to "Backup" status. He rebooted last night and was told his profile was corrupt and a new one would be made. His old profile is still taking up 1.25 GB of drive space and he's retained his user name. He's just not using his preferred settings and can't get to his documents.

I found some KB articles on Microsoft.com and printed them out. I'd link them but I lost the numbers.

Yeah Microsoft is a pain, the registry gets fucked and you have to do 15 million other steps you couldn't do without another comp to just get back to the point where you can use a restore point.

Our Macs haven't had any problems at all to be honest. The worst hardware issue I've had to deal with is reseting the Power Management Unit or a dying PRAM battery.

One of the registry errors was my own damn fault for try to manually kill spyware that wasn't caught by the scan and I got something important. The other was a Windows XP 64-bit incompatiblity with something I installed.

Did that article help?
My first guess would be to try to copy the user profile, thats what I used to do when I was in IT. Seemed to always work.
Not to long ago one of my co-workers had this issue and he used a system restore point. You could always try that.... *crinch* ...if you are brave enough.
