It has come to my attention that macs use a gpu accellerated desktop environment and have done so for years.
Vista is finally to do the same, but won't be out for a year.
Does anyone know of a hack or shell to create a gpu accelerated desktop for windows xp. I tried the longhorn transformation pack but it doesnt work on XP64

Yeah, I always thought for years that the Windows GUI benefited from a fast video card.

^I can attest to that myself. Same CPU but have gone from a gForce4 Ti-4200 to a ATi 9800 Pro to my Ati X1600 and the interface is vastly improved from each.

I always noticed the wonderful minimizing drag even with 1 GB of RAM and a 9600 Pro. And this was under low CPU load. You can really tell when playing video and moving windows around on the screen. Displayed items seem to blur before moving. Well, they stutter more then blur.

No drag at all now. Granted I have 2 GB of RAM. I love how fast it boots up with it too.

^2 gig of ram like me... no wonder it takes like 3 seconds to boot up.

unlike my 512mb laptop, which is full of shit (useless movies and such), takes a few minutes. grr.

the benchmarking app i used tested GUI. it's simply called PerformaceTest. try it out.
i don't experience any minimizing slowdown or whatever but my vid card drivers has an option for "speed up minimizing" or something like that that i turned on. i think it's just disabling the minimizing animation tho.
