It depends. If you've installed the Java Runtime Environment(JRE) before, then get the one without. If you haven't, or you're not sure, just get the one with JRE.

Garfunkel

jre is java runtime environment, if you know you have it dont get it, if you are not sure, may as well get the one with it.

It's completely replaced MS Office for me. I've created many professional designs, templates, charts and graphs and more with it.

i have basicaly de-microsted my windows partition, instead of WMP, i use VLC (video), quintessential media player (audio) and mediamonkey (management), i use FireFox instead of IE, i use Open office, a seperate defragmenter, and i use open source wherever possible....the only thing that i have of microsoft is the OS!

once you start to realise the joys of alternative software, you never turn back!

i use GMAIL

Coded-Dude
04-15-2006, 01:29 AM
yeah, but you can still POP gmail......though I do understand that one, because the web interface is pretty slick. I also have a gmail account, but its not my primary, cause a co-worker and I run our own mail server/domain; using a putty ssh tunnel I access it via Thunderbird(imap)

I use Thunderbird as well for my E-mpire email addy, a person address and 3 business addresses and I love how the interface allows you to check it all right there and with the pop up box I never miss an email across 5-6 addresses.

Let's not forget that like FF it has extentions and skins too and I found a theme that matches my FF theme which just makes the whole thing too damn slick.

I use MS Word because Word notebooks are a godsend. That and I hate Java apps with a passion. And the fact that the OS X version requires you install X11. wtf? Besides, I get regular Office for free... Gah! I bonked my elbow on my desk... :P

Besides, I get regular Office for free... Gah! I bonked my elbow on my desk... :PYeah, I have Office XP and 2003. Office 2004 on the Mac is so much better because of the GUI.

The last good version of Windows Media Player was 6.4. I remember when 7 came out and it has only gotten worse. They keep moving and adding pointless features. It's a CPU hog too.

Thats the beautiful thing about the Macs they have their own suits of programs specifically made for their hardware.. and yeah Eidorian they always add some stupid features that only makes it run slow (Microsoft improve for more issues)

I found it very comforting that 2.72 - 5.03 kept the same interface and low usage. Most of the tweaks were under the hood with plug-ins and Library features.

I never liked WMP, but I have loved WinAMP for years.

I only have OpenOffice installed on one personal machine, the others at home have MS Office, and so does all the machine at work. But then again, we have a ton of the licences, they give us them for free.

if you want a good music manager try media monkey, free and it has lots of great features like the ability to case check song tiltles, tag from the internet and organises your music realy neatly, puts itunes to shame, oh yeah and it runs smooth and is pretty darn quick.

Moses
04-20-2006, 04:19 PM
I quickly looked that up, and the only thing I saw it could do that iTunes (I might be wrong) can't is pull the tag information after importing. Other than that, it basically stole the interface. Brushed metal and Aqua buttons? For shame.

Garfunkel
04-21-2006, 05:51 AM
It monitors music better than itunes (like when you remove a song with explorer it will remove it from its database when you start it, consumes far less resources, faster, auto tags everything and not just cd's,, compatable with some winamp plugins, spell/case checks and looks up album covers.

I have MediaMonkey now and i reckon it is better than itunes.. mainly because it isn't a cpu hog in x64 but i reckon the interface is cooler anyway.
