April 18, 2006 - Remember that next generation massively multiplayer online RPG trailer Square Enix showed at Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference last year? While Square Enix stated that the trailer was merely a test demo for an MMORPG running on a next generation game system or operating system, the showing at Microsoft's press conference suggested that Xbox 360 would be a target platform for the resulting title. It turns out that this may not be the case.

Speaking with Impress Watch on the eve of the Final Fantasy XI Treasures of Aht Urhgan launch in Japan, FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka stated, "As we work on Final Fantasy XI, we're currently working on a new MMORPG targeting Windows Vista and PS3." Square Enix is hoping to make the game a worldwide title, Tanaka added.

Although Tanaka did not make specific mention of Xbox 360, his statements on future MMORPG developments at Square Enix were on the whole pretty vague. He did not state if the new game targeting the PS3 or Windows Vista has anything to do with the trailer shown at E3. Nor did he shed further light on how the footage shown at E3 relates to Final Fantasy XI, only restating that it might be an extension of FFXI, it might be something that exists along side it, or it might be something to counter it.

Future PS3 owners looking to play a next generation version of FFXI on Sony's new system come November are out of luck, though, as Tanaka stated that getting such a title ready for the system's launch would be impossible. Tanaka did not, however, comment on the possibility of an updated version of FFXI for the system, similar to what the Xbox 360 is getting. And sadly, the website failed to ask the obvious question: will the PS2 version of FFXI be playable on PS3?

This whole thing is very iffy to me. They're not sure if the title shown at E3 at MS's conference is the same one as the one he is mentioning. It seems the platform for the new MMO is not solid either.

Can anyone find the video of the test MMO shown at the MS E3 conference? I know I've seen it somewhere before.

it is no secret that Square is working on a new MMORPG. FF11 has proved very successful and brought Square alot of profits- nearly have the revenu of one of the years.

what is interesting is that the demo they showed on X2's E3 last year may not be exclusive. that demo was by far the best looking game running on X2.
though when you think about it, it makes sense. X2 isn't selling in Japan and world wide sales aren't that high. it would be better for them financially to release a multiplatform game at this stage. even with PS3, they won't probably ship the first exclusive untill after a year from launch when the system has sold well enough.

by the way, I don't see why they should re-release FF11 on PS3. they should simply leave the same version. PS3 will run PS2 game, so Sony solved the problem of porting. I say it isn't worth the trouble. better focus on expansions and new games rather than ports.

Xbox 360 I believe. Very much anticipating more news on this MMO. WOW is getting very boring lately hehe.

As far as I know it shouldn't be a problem to run FFXI PS2 on PS3 unless there is something about the online configuration of the PS3 that we don't know about which would dissallow it.

good catch. the new online model may be incompatible. I was always wondering how PS2 online mode games will work on PS3. maybe the won't work at all.

I would take a single player rpg, or a rpg that has co-op over an mmo anyday. Hopefully this sill be there only mmo for the next gen.

I don't think MS would be pleased with this announcement, then again if Vista is built with easy 360 ports in mind and vice-versa which I believe would be the case then the situation could be fixed so that all PC PS3 and 360 would get the game.

i'm as much in the dark as you my friend. if the news is only that squareenix has a new game in the works thats kind of redundant. what was they going to do stop making games entirely. theres a drought and we are all gathered around the same watering hole.
