View Full Version : Will some games be on DVD?

If blu-ray holds 25 gb and modern games like Oblivion take up half of a dual layered DVD wouldn't it make sense to release PS3 games on DVD until games start to take up over 7gb?
It would save on costs at least.

No. All games will be on Blu-Ray for anti-piracy reasons.

Nope. All PS3 games must be Blu-Ray. It's mainly a copy-protection concern is the reason behind that choice, I think.

Well, all the 360 games are ripped and on the internet but you can't run them. As long as the PS3 itself is copy-protected I don't see the problem with released some DVD games.

Simply forget about it, PS3 games on DVD will not happen. Kutaragi said: "All games on Blu-ray". End of story.

True. But if the PS3's hardware have the same [or perhaps better] security as the 360, then I guess "time to crack the hardware security plus time to crack BR's security." And BTW, though it's complex, hackers has already run a burn 360 game (without cracking the security).

Are you sure on that? All I've seen are some suspiciuos videos, not try-it-at-home demoes.

Re-opened due to popular demand
I think it might be possible some games will be "BD-9 disks" aka a red-laser 8.5GB DVD-ROM with AACS (encryption), and BD+ (DRM) :)

If the game is going to be several GB then you might as well put it on a single-layered BD disc. Many games initially didn't fill the DVD disc but still exceeded CD size restraints. Maybe if the game is small enough they can just have it distributed online.

If Blu-Ray is a strict requirement given they've actually gone out and said all games will be on Blu-Ray, then I simply don't see them ever taking such a half-assed route just to put games on DVD-ROM, especially when games will only get bigger, not smaller.

Aren't they going to put games from all regions on a single disc? If that's the case, which I think it is, then putting games on a regular DVD would not be feasible.

People keep using Oblivion as an example but keep in mind that Oblivion is a PC game that is designed to cater to a range of specs and traditionally PC games are not that big in terms of disc space, and we'll never know what Oblivion could have looked like if it was made for the PS3 on a single BRD.
If you look at the Getaway demo, Phil has already stated that the picadilly circus scene alone takes up hundreds of MBs.

Also, if they're gonna be compatible with regular SD TV's, they'll need to include all three types of resolution: HD, NTSC and PAL.

The games are gonna be region-free, so no they aren't. Welcome to the forums.

The only thing that would possibly be on a DVD is demo discs for PS3. Remember the demo for black was on a CD. Given that demo discs are normally given for free, and that Blu-Ray discs are expensive right now. It would only make since to put the demos on DVD, it would save alot of money. I don't think Sonys to worried about people copying demo discs.

Just forget about PS3 games on DVD, whichever the case you think of.

Honestly, no matter what protection scheme is used for PS3 games, the pirates will eventually be able to break it.
Besides, the Blu-Ray specification is designed to be a burnable medium from the start. I'm sure that would give the pirates a little edge since they have the burning technology to play with.

yes but the price of the disks will be too expensive to warrent pirating - for a very long time at least.

^^Yeah. But the longer the security holds tight, the more money for Sony. Also, when the hackers breach the security, Sony will just force-install a firmware update. Like when you access Live on 360. If you don't have the newest FW, you can't you Live.

When the pirates can afford a pc BD player. Or for that matter when they even become availible outside the commercial environment. Until then you dont have a whole lot to worry about.
Even when they do break it the distribution is going to be far lower just because of sheer game size.

Didn't Sony announce they would be putting BD-RWs into the upcomming VAIOs? correct me if i'm wrong!

Good point. I hope that this will deter pirates.

I dont understand whats being discussed here. Sony already said ALL PS3 games will be on Blu-Ray discs, end of story. What are we discussing, whether they lied or not?

We can discuss the reasoning behind Sony's decision can we not?
We can also discuss the technology.

It's been beat into the ground. It's common sense by now, jeez. Look through the archive or something.

At the end of the day, PS3 will get cracked, it's just a matter of when. When PS3 get's a modchip, I don't see why they couldn't split the game onto multiple DVD-Rs if they need to, or strip things like FMVs that take up a fair amount of disc space.
That's what has happened this generation (but replace DVD-R with CD-R in the early days), and I would be very surprised if something similiar didn't happen again, and then there is the 60GB HDD you could potentially run games from too.
I'm not condoning piracy at all, I'm just being realistic.

Yeah it's a constant game of "We got the better bomb" (like the Audioslave B-side! :-p). Hackers love the challenge and triumph of cracking the latest security features, and people like Sony are always trying to come up with a new way to regulate it. Hackers are children like that, but it's bound to happen :(

If the PSP and the PS2 is anything to go by, the homebrew scene for Sony consoles is usually large and active.
