THQ internal developer Kaos Studios, creators of Desert Combat and Key Technologies for Battlefield 2, prepares for Next-Generation Warfare on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC with with their Frontlines: Fuel of War, billed as an evolution in riveting, open-world first-person shooter gameplay; it is expected to be released in fall 2007.

"Frontlines: Fuel of War will take players to the next generation of combat. The game focuses on the cutting edge in military technology that will allow players to experience the highly-charged frontlines of tomorrow, today," said Frank DeLise, general manager, Kaos Studios. "Through intense, nail biting, non-linear single- or multi-player campaigns, players will be able to use more than 60 vehicles and advanced weaponry, from next-generation assault tanks to experimental RC drones."

"Kaos Studios represents THQ's increased focus on fostering the industry's most talented individuals to deliver innovative and original titles for the next-gen cycle," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president, worldwide publishing, THQ. "Frontlines: Fuel of War bridges two of the most popular genres in gaming, and it's all from the very creative minds of an elite team with a proven track record of success." Here's hoping it's all true and it's better than 'The Outfit'.

Game Informer has a small preview of this game in their new issue (the Red Steel one). Unless this game has near-MMO features of some kind, I'm not really interested in another war game :(

Another...First...Person...Shooter.....?
That's it, I'm going on a carpet bombing run. You might not see me again!

No kidding, it's all Halo's fault. Note to devs: enough with the FPS clones already! Where are my adventure games, my Zelda rip-offs, my Icos and Shadow of the Collossuses? Look at the most successful selling games of last year, ZERO FPSs. Why? We're sick of them. I'm sure Halo 3 will sell a bazillion copies, but your game is not Halo 3. In fact, Halo is the only FPS in the top 10 in console games since 2002 (Wikepedia). Now maybe popularity isn't the best indicator of a game being good (look at all the EA sports titles), but I swear there have been soooo many FPSs announced for next gen so far. Seriously, drop that camera behind the shoulder RE style for a change...

Well I think this is to be expected for new hardware, guys. FPS's seem to be the easiest to put together, plus they're hands-down the easiest way to show off new technology & especially nice graphics. Any time we have new engine happenings & new cloth technology or whatever, it's show-cased in an FPS. Hopefully once the "TECHNOLOGY LOL! J/K!! :)" phase ends and people start getting down n' dirty with the next-gen hardware, we start seeing things more artistic come out that make innovative use of the technologies these shooters are showcasing. Rome wasn't built in a day, y'know. I'm not sure how that quote applies, it just came to mind :-p

Anyways, are people complaining this much about Red Steel being a FPS and the first real game for Revolution? Just curious.

Probably not, just because Gamecube and Nintendo in general has been weak on FPSs since... well, Goldeneye... that and the new controller mechanic should make the genre at least a bit more interesting. Good point though about the Rev. Maybe it's not the genre we dislike but the fact that it's become so derivative in the current gen. Maybe I should be more optimistic about next gen versions of these genre games...

You have every right to be skeptical if they don't look like they're really stepping it up, though :)

Red Steel certainly defines "stepping it up" so that's probably why it's not getting an "ugh, another shooter!" response.

BTW, don't forget that Gamecube had Metroid Prime -- those were pretty well-received FPS games, though I wasn't really a fan.

I'm soooo sick of this shit it's not even funny.
Make something else besides run and gun fps.
It is halo's fault. However good it may or may not be (imo, not bad, but overrated and overhyped).

Loved Halo :splitspin

But I see your point. Irregardless this current barrage of fps is just overwhelming whether it be PS3, 360, and/or pc. Remeber in the 90s when everything was a fighter or in the 80s when everything was a platformer. Its just he genre of choice right now and things will soon change (honestly we are starting to see a turn towards the 3rd person shooter, IMO).

By far one of my favorite genres. :) But I think they need to reinvigorate some of the older platformers. Right now, there are just way too many cloned shooters and not enough originality.

you are talking down a whole genre. this is like saying enough racers or plarformers. I can understand saying something specific like "enough WW2 shooters", but not a whole genre.

as for me, I love FPS games and I love this game being in the near future (my best time zone for games). I say bring it on!

PS. since more PC devs will support consoles this time, and FPS is the biggest genre on PC, expect even more FPS games on the next-gen systems :)

@Z

Well, you've got to admit there's been an imbalance in the types of genres announced for next gen. It's not much different than something like reality tv shows dominating the fall lineup. I like some reality tv shows, but they seem easy to produce and aimed at a mass market. And more importantly, when they're bad... they're REALLY bad. So it's just a matter of whether you'd prefer more reality tv shows or not. I think we've got plenty, but you're welcome to like all the derivative FPSs if ya like ;). My only worry is that since dev resources are limited these FPSs are in direct competition with more artistic/ambitious games. But who knows, maybe these games will blow me away and we'll both be happy.
