View Full Version : What is EyeToyTwo? just maybe!

there has been lots of speculation about this new device for the PS3, and whether or not it could operate in 3 dimensional space. obviously there are technicalities involved with the one camera solution in producing that holy grail: Minority Report emulation. perhaps there is a solution already hinted at in the name EyeToyTwo if there were two cameras either side of the screen then it becomes a little less problematic. surely it would be a simple matter of calculating the distance from user to console if a type of stereo vision were incorporated, allowing for that 3 dimensional space to become a possibility. a while back i saw a video that saw a helicopter fly out into the audience and a computer generated car drive in and out of a solid models placed on a table. this used a two camera solution.

now imagine the possibilities. there is no reason why a simplified form of this could not be implimented with cell and two cameras.

Yea I remember seeing this video awhile back, at first it was thought to be the Nintendo Rev controller. I was thinking that Nintendo really outdid them all, then I saw the Rev Wand :piss:
This is a great concept video, and hopefully Sony or one of the companies buys this tech. so I can do this

Cool. CreativeWriter, God of War :) (rips eye out of giant)... Seriously, lightsaber battles where you swing the sword will be amazing. This is like the revmote X10, full range of motion. I'm so happy to be a gamer while these techs develop.

We had this very same topic over a year ago. It is what we originally thought the Eye Toy 2 was due to Sony partnering with the guys behind the technology for their digital cameras. To our surprise, though, Sony had something else in mind when they showed the Eye Toy 2 at last years E3. But since Sony hasn't let much out on this new Eye Toy, it's still questionable as to whether it will be able to do these things or not.

that is how it would look on a monitor. throw a virtual ball at your tv and watch it hit your friends wall and bounce around his room, if he doesn't hit it back of course. imagine your kids setting up a table with lego brick buildings and moving a car around it on screen. why bother going down to the shops to try a new dress on (if your a lady lol) when you can see what it looks like on the tv! virtual window shopping. and they stressed it could be used in a small space: livingroom?

dom its worth a fresh look in light of E3 and i can't remember any demos of eyetoy 2. i can remember a demo with the eyetoy 1 and two cups though.

The one at E3 was the one about the cups. It is also said that this new Eye Toy will recognize facial expressions. I think that's what the Eye Toy Mirror was.

that was a cell demo by toshiba, but theres no reason why it couldn't appear on eye-toy2 agreed. they also showed a model walking on a catwalk and a virtual reprisentation wearing an entirely different outfit.

I seem to re-call this footage on the PS3 where the guy waves at the camera (wasn't known if it was Eye Toy 2 or a new device) and two girls wave back at him.
That got me excited but since then haven't seen any more footages.

The only EyeToy demonstrated on stage at Sony's E3 conference last year was the EyeToy 1 camera (The water mug demo)

I can't wait to see what technology Richard Marks has been working on for the Eye Toy 2, I doubt he would let his MIT PhD on man-machine interface go to waste. ~_~

Are you talking about the cups or the realtime mirror?

Even though these new kinds of features are available, persuading games developers to use them is an uphill struggle, says Marks. He admits that there remain limitations with the EyeToy - fast, complex movements may remain problematic, for example - but developers might be able to find creative ways to get around them, he says. Marks gives the example of early computer games in which the graphics pallet was limited to four colours. What developers quickly learned to do was swap pallets in the middle of generating a scene so that the top half of the screen was rendered with different colours to the bottom half. It was an idea that effectively doubled the number of colours that the player would see. "It's those kinds of tricks that we need to see more of for the EyeToy," he says.
Some are already emerging. For example, there is no force feedback with the EyeToy - get hit by a virtual ball or bullet, say, and you feel nothing. However, you can achieve a remarkable approximation using sound. "Your brain does most of the work," Marks says. "Sound doesn't replace force feedback, but it is the next best thing."
Marks has his sights set on some new tricks, too. One of the biggest drawbacks of video input at the moment is that it gives only a two-dimensional image of the player. His dream is to translate the three-dimensional movements of the player into the actions of a character or object in the game. Stereo images produced with two cameras are not the answer, he says, because such an arrangement has to be carefully calibrated each time the game is played to correct for any slight differences in alignment of the cameras. "That is a stumbling block for home use," he says. Another option is to measure distance using the camera's focusing system, but that gives only a rough idea based on what part of the image the camera has focused on.
A much more promising approach is beginning to take shape thanks to a new generation of cameras that are sensitive to infrared light as well as visible wavelengths. These cameras can record accurate three-dimensional images using infrared flashes (see Illustration). When a scene - a player holding one hand out towards the camera, say - is illuminated with an infrared flash, the games console can measure how long it takes the light to travel to the player's body and be reflected back into the camera. This information is used to create a contour map of the player. Repeat the process 60 times a second and you have a 3D movie.

Marks has already begun experiments. With a 3D camera, he can import his entire body into a game. When he dances, his on-screen character - a skeleton at the moment - dances too. When he punches or kicks, the skeleton mimics his movements exactly. With this kind of technology, says Marks, your imagination is the limit.
