Is it good, and how does it compare to Hostel, The Hills have Eyes, Saw I & II?

It was okay. I saw a screening of it on thursday and it was free, so of course the theatre was packed. The whole audience was laughing at some of the dialogue (pretty cheesy--think of the original Resident Evil game's dialogue). Some freaky parts (eerie score and cgi, with strange cinemetography). I never played any of the games, but I've been told that if I had that I would have enjoyed the movie a lot more (and been less confused). Sean Bean is always great to watch too, which added a bit to the movie. I give it a 6.5/10 cause it was a very good videogame adaptation, but not much more.
It was alright but some things just didn't make a good transition from the game into the movie. The gory parts made it corny.

It was alright. There were some cool fucked up scenes, but it wasn't all that and a bag of potato chips.

Hostel - Sucked...you should have already known this. The botched murder is one of the greatest comedic moments in history though.
Hills Have Eyes - In a league of it's own...can basically only be compared to its remake.
Saw I & II - Pwn'd by this movie (PERIOD)
Silent Hill is one of the greatest "supernatural horror" movies to come out in recent memory, and it conveyed the sense of openness and lonelieness quite effectively. The plot had a GOOD deal of allusions to the Bible, and was quite deep, lending itself generously to a sequel where Chris looks for his wife in Silent Hill.
The technical aspects capture the atmosphere of the Silent Hill series perfectly.
The gore while not having quantity has great quality, especially when PH (Potato Head) comes into play.
The dialogue is on par with the games.
It wasn't scary, but it does creep you out. Similar to many parts of the SH franchise.
The music was ripped from the game and perfectly used.
So, go see it:aim:

We all liked Silent Hill. Hostel sucked balls, though it did have lots of breasts early on. Of course, it doesn't come anywhere near the Saw films.
I thought Hostel did a good job of making me laugh and freaking me out at the same time.
The first Saw was way better, Saw II was a bit of a let down.
Silent Hill was pretty dumb in my opinion. It had its moments, but they were on the rare side.

Now it sounds like Stay Alive. The last horror movie I watched was Wolf Creek. I thought it was fantastic for a horror movie. Compare it to that.
They probably should of let the Japanese make this movie or some some good Japanese directore. Although I'm not expecting Cannibal Hentai.

Silent Hill starts off stronger than most horrors these days. I thought it was really good.
I've never played any of the Silent Hill games, but I plan on it. I liked all the Resident Evils.
And yes, Wolf Creek is really good. It's a real-life horror, as opposed to Silent Hill's video-game horror.
Saw was pretty sucky to be honest...could have been far better, second was worse
Wolf Creek > Hostel, Saw, Saw II, Silent Hill

Don't compare anything to Hostel except Ace Ventura.
Stay Alive? That looks like it's the Gigli of horrors.

It was ok. Visualy amazing but other then that the story slightly lacked and the "fright" was not there but what can I expect from such a film as this expecially if it was a game before. *shrugs* Was not to thrilled with it.

it looked good, had few cool moments, not really "scary", but created a nice atmosphere and for the first hour or so seemed like a pretty good film. but after that it was just long-winded and boring.

I honestly wouldn't bother with watching Silent Hill unless you've played one of the games, or watched a friend play them. Not because of story information, but just because Silent Hill really is a style unto itself. It's not a gore-fest, it's not another Japanese horror game/flick with a scary little girl, it's... Silent Hill. You need to take it for what it is, accept that not everything gets explained to you (forget the possibility of things being handed on a silver platter especially), there's gonna be some slow parts with chill music (straight from the game like somebody mentioned, and that's a VERY good thing), and damn if they didn't construct the environments just like they are in the game. The office at Midwich Elementary School has the same look as the office does in the game (that little cut-away area where the office lady would interface with students), plus the restrooms looked the same, and I swear the Hospital looked exactly the same, at least the part with the elevator.
My personal favorite moment of consistency with the game (besides the sirens!) was early on as Rose is looking for her child in the alleyways and the tilted camera follows her from atop, I distinctly remember that part in the game with the tilted camera and all -- it was perfect. For one thing it says a lot about Silent Hill that the game transferred so naturally into film. If you're expecting a movie anything like the Hills Have Eyes, you'll be sorely disappointed, same with expectations like Saw or The Grudge, or any other scary movie. Play the first one or something then check out the movie. It's also worth checking out at a weird time since horror movie audiences are TERRIBLE. I can't stand most of the people who go to the movies so they can be obnoxious & stuff, but that's just me I think :-p Some dude behind us had to comment on everything so I'm just bitter.
Great movie though -- in my eyes it finally replaces Mortal Kombat as the best videogame movie. That's not saying a whole lot, but I really loved the movie. hehe

Well the problem is this if you are going to sell a film from a movie you have to do something that makes it a movie and not a video game. I don't think they did that as much. The problem is people want things to be like the video game that it doesn't work well in film. Silent Hill seemed more better if they did more with the story then leave you questioning whether it is good or not.

Well I personally think they did an excellent job of translating the game experience over to the movie, though it was subtle because a lot of Silent Hill translated so naturally to cinema. If they wanted to do more with the story then they would have had to make it longer (and people have already complained endlessly about its length ~2h5m), as a complete Silent Hill game's story would take at least 4 or 5 hours if you knew exactly where to go and what to do. Rather than more story I would have loved to have more "WTF!?!?" parts like the mannequin room in SH3 where a mannequin loses his head and starts bleeding (not to mention he screams), or a good scary part like the locker in SH1 when the body busts out of the locker right in front of you -- scared the **** outta me!! I think things like that would have translated perfectly to film as well.
