This TV seems to be the best value for money at around £1,200 but I'm just wondering does anyone know of a TV which offers similar performance for cheaper? Obviously when I buy a TV, or any HD TV, I'll have the PS3 in mind. Thanks for the help! ;)

1080p ???

No, I don't think so, 720p I believe. Wouldn't a 1080p TV cost a fortune? :(

All the experts are saying anyone waiting to upgrade their TV to HD should wait at least two years.
Appereantly that's when the dust will settle and we will see true quality coming through.

Fats

^I also kind of agree with what you're saying there. Would it make more sense until 1080p TV's are released on the UK market and the price settles somewhat?

Argh, really!?

I want a HDTV right now dangit... I was thinking about getting a 32" Thomson Intuiva, it seems like it's got pretty sweet options for a decent price, and 1080p is no doubt too expensive for me...

So anyways, you're saying that HDTVs will be far better in 2 years?

masteratt
04-23-2006, 03:01 PM
In two years all this HD TV excitement will clear. More companies will really get the hang of it and basically in general there will be a more solid feel about the whole HD market.
At the moment everything is way too hectice and with the HD technology not 100% finalised yet and it keeps upgrading, you might buy something that later you might feel ripped off for as in two years something much better that does more will be out and be cheaper than the HD TV you bought now.
I don't know what the situation is around Europe or in the Far West but as far as UK is concerned, waiting two years is definately the most sensible thing to do.
Unless you are rich.

you can get 1080p sets for that price... thats not even a 1080i... plus its contrast ratio sucks so for get taking advantage of any HDR lighting stay away from LCDs of anytype get your self a good quality direct veiw CRT theres lots of 1080p CRTs under 1200 with HDMI

800:1 contrast... before you buy it ask to watch it in a dark room you will see what i mean

personaly this is what i would hold out for... AKA put in OT sell a child or something between now and november...

you can do it!

FATS lives in Europe, where HD CRT's do not exist at all. IMO you are definately much better off getting an LCD than a plasma if you are going to be gaming, as you avoid screen-burn with stuff like permanent HUD's. Otherwise it is plasma all the way (better blacks, response time). As for which LCD, the Samsung's are cheap and well made, but lack the pic quality of Panasonic's or the Sony Bravia's. If you are getting Sky HD, it is £100 less if bought with a Bravia, so that is worth considering in the price equation.

I would buy a 40" S-series Bravia as an LCD, not as goood pic quality as the V-series but much cheaper. As for plasmas I recommend a Panasonic TH42PX60 (which I own and is amazing with a 360 as well as upscaled DVD).

The Sony SXRD TV doesnt accept 1080p signal.....just to let you know. At work I display 1080p videos on it, but its because its connected to a Media Center PC

That Samsung tv is crap compared to their newer model......its gorgeous.
4000:1

The colours are so bright and vivid that its looks better than Sony Bravia XBR.

The model number is LNS3251D

4000:1 is a theoretical figure btw, Sony LCD panels are the same and they are only 800:1. Again that model does not exist in Europe.

If you are looking at a screen under 50", I wouldn't be so concerned with 1080p, unless you want to use it up very close like a computer monitor.

What I'd be more concerned with, esp. with LCD, are contrast ratios and response times.

Personally, I'd wait until August or so. Summer is when we'll see a bunch of the new models from CES making their way to store shelves.

If you wait until late-summer/early-fall, you'll have more choices -- go with a brand-new model with better specs, or go with an older model at closeout prices.

Some great advice here so I'm basically stuck between this TV and waiting a while until I can get a set with 1080p. Is the difference between 720p and 1080p massive? At the moment I can't say I'd be too fussed and having a TV like the above I'm sure I'd be very happy with it.

I know its hoping against hope, but I am waiting for toshiba/canon SED. I still love the bright FAST picture of classic tube and SED will replicate that experience in a low-power two inch thick HD package.

Until then, refresh speed is my main gripe. Too slow = headache.

I actually went down to my local Electronics shop and seen the Samsung LE40R51B for myself, and yes, I'm pretty impressed. I have a strong feeling that I will go for this TV as I really do think I'll purchase an HD TV within the next two months.

I did notice however that it wasn't quite as nice looking as the 60 Inch LG monster I seen. ;)

Is the difference between 720p and 1080p massive?

At larger screen sizes, the difference will be pretty great with Blu-ray content if your set will accept a 1080p feed. (Few will right now though)

As I said before though, under 50" I wouldn't be that concerned. (And I'm a big 1080p fanboy since CES '05) If you are looking at a 40" set, I'd concentrate on fast response times, which are really important for gaming on an LCD, and good contrast ratios.

Bla, I still will not buy LCD's for TV. I purchaced an HDTV 1080i Panasonic, and the picture is outstanding....and the upconversion is outstanding on any source. The only flat pannel TV I will buy is an SED TV, which still is not out yet, but is based on CRT technology but differs that every pixel has its own electron gun. Thin like an LCD/Plasma, picture quality like a CRT with less distortion than ever, no "NATIVE RESOLUTION" problems of LCDs, superior contrast/brightness/color reproduction/Viewing angle of CRTs, and no backlights!

Personally, I am happy with my 27inch 450$ USD HDTV, because I get a wonderful picture, it saves me quite a bit of money, and if I had allocated 1500$ to spend on a TV and I went with my $450 option, in two years I could get an Awsome 750-1000$ SED or OLED based TV in total for the same price point as on a large LCD TV now.
