In the May 2006 Issue (#72) of Official PS2 Magazine UK (pages 14-16), the PS3 is revealed almost fully (with the exception of price). For starters CEO Ken Kutaragi has stated that every month leading up to the November release, Sony's factorys roll out roughly 1 million PS3 units leading up to the November launch. From the start of Spring to mid-November there will be 8-9 million units if you do the maths right meaning that the launch will have shortages but not the near-catastrophic kind the X360 had.
Next up, the development community has expressed it's excitement over the delay. David Hasle from Monolith (of F.E.A.R and Condemned fame) said "That gives us more time to polish, playtest, and make a kick ass game!" which hints that Monolith is preparing something for the new console. Various other developers including Randy Pithcford of Gearbox said that he was pleased that Sony is catering to everyone by choosing a worldwide launch. Meanwhile, Hiroyuki Kobayashi (producer of Devil May Cry 4) said he anticipated that Sony would do this anyway- even going so far to say that a 2007 release would be even better.
Sony has officialy stated that the PS3 will have an integrated 60GB HDD (although they are unsure wether to launch with one built in- but it is extremely likely). They say that it will be a 'key component of the Playstation Network Platform' (Sony's answer to Xbox Live). They went on to reveal all about the PNP feature.
The PNP will feature XBL like 'handles' (a free account ehich when registered lets you choose a name), matchmaking lobbies (a la Halo 2), online rankings, game uploads/downloads which includes straight swapping of data between two PS3's, XBL like friends lists and avatars (an intersting thing is that the Eyetoy succsessor will take a photo of you and transform your face into a CGI avatar!), full voice/video chat which includes messaging, virtual shops for buying extras like PSP style updates and the biggest news of all which is game loading from HDD- this means that digital distribution will play a big role in the PS3's lifetime. Since full PSOne games are confirmed by Sony to be downloadable to PSP memory sticks later this year, we can expect the same thing to happen on the PS3.
Speaking of the HDD, it will act almost identiacally to the 360's HDD. It will store game saves, movie files, music, demos, movie trailers, back catalogues of PS1 games and Sony is looking into the possibility of full PS3 games to download.
As well as offering the backwards compatibility, the PS3 will be able to upscale all games- be it PS1 or PS2 games to the lowest form of HD- 480p which is a quality definition superior to that of normal SDTV output making your existing library super sharp. Another news snippet is that the PS3 is completely region free- following in the footsteps of the 360 which will enable you to play import games.
If all this info isn't enough, the games which will be in the launch line-up include-
John Woo's Stranglehold
Tekken
Sonic The Hedgehog
Resistence: Fall of Man
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Lair
Motorstorm
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom
Sounds good to me because it includes the massively hyped Lair and Tekken which in the PS1 days was a system seller.
The final piece of news which will add a lot of ammo to the fanboys cannon is that Sony has binned the controversial 'boomerang' controller and will reveal a brand new one come E3....
Other PS3 related news comes in the Kwik Fitz section (named after the editor of the magazine and the UK car garage) on page 31 which is a rumour/confirmed mill. Among them are these juicy pieces of info are....
CONFIRMED-
Crysis is coming to PS3
Level-5, the Dragon Quest crew, is making a new PS3 RPG
Sony's first Blu-Ray player releases in the US in July, costing $1000
Pandemic are making six new games split over current and next gen hardware

It features awsome footage of 'The Darkness' on PS3 so check it out....
MGS4 creator Hideo Kojima will be inviting the boys from OPS2 UK to his studio to have an in-depth playtest and to see how the graphics are shaping up. Kojima-san will also be the guest editor of the OPS2 UK magazine next month. OPS2 jokes that he might even put cut-scenes between the pages! It hits the UK highstreet on May 18th and will feature secret games such as the Timesplitter's teams first PS3 game (Timesplitters ), a top-secret huge new LotR beating fantasy epic (TES IV: Oblivion ) and a terrifying PC horror shooter C.O.M.E.S to PS3 (try to guess what it is, it's on the 360 too ) and also a playtest of Sonic on PS3

Is this for real? lol.
I think the greatest suprise here is either that the Eyetoy makes a 3D avatar of you or that Tekken will be a launch title.
OMG Timesplitters PS3!!! Hawtness!
Crysis on PS3? I would not mind at all lol.
MGS4 PLAYTEST!!! OMG THIS DESERVES ALL CAPS RIGHT NOW!
P.S. If this is all BS I am very sorry lol.

Actually, I want to add to what I think are the most important things to get from this news. I want to add that the next PS2 UK is going to do an 'in-depth playtest' by Kojima and that Kojima is going to be a guest editor for the next coming PS2 UK mag.

I don't know what to think about it. I can't believe that info right now since I don't usually trust press anymore. However, I would be very happy to see most of that actually happening, really, and none of it sounds impossible.
If instead of a magazine it had been info from the E3 conference, you would drown in +rep, for sure.

with rev working on their secret controller (at the time) do you really think that Sony would want anyone to see what their controller looked like. it was never intended to look like that IMO. i doubt if the actual PS3 shell will look exactly the same either. we know nothing really about cell or RSX. roll on E3. give us those secrets Sony.

This article seems to contain a lot of mistakes:
This article seems to be reworking a bit the news announced at the PS Business Briefing.
And they make a lot of mistakes too.
They're talking about 8-9 million units from Spring to November while they should know they talked about 6 million units by the end of March 2007.
Moreover Sony did not say that the PS3 HDD can be used to store dowloaded PSX games, that was a PSP specific announcement (although of course it's absolutely a possible thing).
Just last week Crysis' developer said they don't plan to bring the new engine to next gen consoles for the moment and they say it's confirmed the opposite.
They forget to say that the region free thing depends on developers so we're far from being able to say that we can play imported games.
And I remember that more than one source reported that Kuatargi talked about 720p upscaled PS1/PS2 games on PS3.
Taken from GAF and pretty sum up the situation.
Also PS2 games at 720p wouldnt be difficult? PS3 has no eDram this time, so less bandwith?

I'd rather see some scans than some interpretation from a forum user of the claimed publication. Where are the scans, only then will I believe all this. Until then like frosty said, most of this is old news. More like forum predictions circling on the internet anyway. Some are just wild guesses in the dark hoping to hit the target.
Scans are gonna be the nail if you ask me so if someone got them, do share.
PS: I just downloaded THE DARKNESS video(its got some footage I've never seen before) from the link provided by the first post. Am uploading to savefile now. Wait for it.

Well.. I haven't read it all yet but only the first paragraph. That means there is about 2.6 - 3.0 million PS3's to major regions (US, Japan, Europe). This is awesome news IF true. Lets hope so! Alright well I'm really excited to hear more and more about PNP. I already knew most of that stuff but it just gets me going when I can hear about an awesome online network similiar to Live... EXCEPT FREE! The eye-toy news is cool too... but I wonder what other things you can take pics of and turn them into CG?
Also, just curious. What did PS2 do for PS1 games to make them look better?? I remember seeing some comparison shots and the PS2 were obviously of higher quality. How much better will this jump be for PS1 games?

Really? I thought I haven't seen the hyena type thing climbing all the way up to the top of the roof before. I have this old video of darkness that is just a teaser kind and only shows the hyena and then the guy on the roof looking in his hindsight at us with 2 snakes cutting the trailer out.
I might have missed out on the full trailer ofcourse but still .... ?

cliffbo.... I am just not that interested in Motostorm.... it may look amazing but I just don’t think its my cup of tea....and I think Lair could be fantastic...but.... I don’t know... I guess I am thinking of tried and true phenomenally great titles..... like.....Sony has it's MGS type games.... Nintendo has its fantastic Metroid and other franchises.....and Microsoft has its Halo....
Then again... the 360 launch didn't have any of these at launch so I guess Lair would be pretty reasonable.
but I do know that Nintendo will have their Super Smash Bros....online.... and Metroid Prime 3 is rumored to possibly be ready for launch.....
So I was just curious if their was anything like this for the PS3

i think GRAW came close to realism and Oblivion (although its not quite as good as the PC version IMO) is prety solid. i'm not into racing games myself but Motorstorm has still got me hyped.

I assume things such as save game files, or who knows maybe you could use a second PS3 as almost a second disk drive so you can watch a movie and play a game at the same time with the same screen.

sharing game data from one persons HD to another..... Id imgine that being a multi purpose devise you could have a bunch of stuff that youd like to transfer to friends and whatnot.
Music... movies... save files... ect.

To me that article is more or less irrelevent because it's not really telling us anything we didn't already know about PS3; in that context I don't know what to make of those 'launch' titles. Could be, could not be - but it doesn't much matter to me because I'm more focused on information on the console itself. We should be getting some game line-ups soon enough.
curryking1
04-24-2006, 04:10 AM
I agree xbdestroya. I think all the information that is 'relevant' will be kept from us until May 8th and onwards into and after E3.
Some of it, if true, was news though. And if not news, it was more like notifying us of when news may be coming lol.
Like the mention of Timesplitters PS3 being in development and the UK mag going to playtest MGS 4 so I guess we can expect a preview on May 18th from it, as implied by the 'article.' Maybe we'll already have seen a lot of MGS 4 from E3 tho lol, but maybe or maybe not a playable view of it. The UK mag did mention playtesting tho so that would be good.
Thanks yoshaw for uploading that clip of the Darkness. It doesn't look technically amazing at all (I can imagine that those visuals could be running on today's computer's pretty easily) but I like the cinematic flair the trailer had, at the end it kind of felt a bit like a movie trailer which I thought was pretty cool. I'm really not expecting much from this game tho lol.

There are inconsistencies, and I don't think it's supposed to represent the whole launch. I'm interesting in the Oblivion quote, did they MENTION Oblivion at all or was it just guesswork by whoever put it up? The 3D avatars thing sound cool, perhaps it's like that technology shown awhile back..

PLENTY OF PS3 GOODNESS REVEALED!
Monolith plots PS3 title, new EyeToy avatar scoop, plus tentative launch line up and a host of next-gen Sony goodies
11:41 You've got to love our magazine brethren. Despite working exclusively in dead tree media, they get in on some top scoops which occasionally make us a touch green with envy. Well, maybe not, but hats off to Official PlayStation 2 Magazine which has come up with a bunch of great PS3 goodies in the latest issue.
Chief among the delights is the news that Monolith, the developer behind awesome PC FPS F.E.A.R., is working on a PS3 exclusive. Not a great deal more is known, but given the developer's leanings we'd be surprised to find it was anything other than a PS3 FPS. It almost certainly won't be a F.E.A.R. title though, as Vivendi has retained all rights to that series.
Other hot PS3 news? Well, the mag also reveals that your online PS3 persona will be captured via an EyeToy camera, which can then be converted into an avatar so you'll be able to upload your mugshot to the PlayStation Network Platform and share your visage with an unsuspecting world.
As well as providing rumours on the existence of a new Level 5 (Dragon Quest VIII, Rogue Galaxy ) PS3 title and the fact that Pandemic is beavering away on up to six new games for current- and next-gen consoles, OPSM 2 also offers a tentative array of some of the PS3 titles which should be available for launch in November. They are:

This has already been mentioned by Phile Harison. It is said that you will be able to use the PSP with an add-on camera or Eye Toy 2 for the PS3 to make your own movies (don't get any ideas) and store them on your 60GB HDD. From there, you can host them directly online for viewing for your selected audience. Rather your PS3 is on or not, you can also allow other PS3 or the PSP to view that content off the HDD.
Concerning the topic, a number of things in the front page post sounds bogus. What really didn't make any sense was the internal HDD. Why would Sony need to make the thing internal if it clearly says, 'add-on and upgradable due to whatever amount they give you not being enough'? And HOW, on God's green earth, can Sony produce 8-9 million units by this November and STILL have shortages? :look: Six million by the end of March of 07 sounds more reasonable. This here sounds like someone caught frostbite to the brain. I could go on with quite a few others, but I think we all get the picture here.
Lastly, a lot of these things mentioned is old news. I would advise waiting on E3.
