Hey guys, I normally stick within my element at the PS3 board but I just worked up a little rough-edit of something I've had for awhile and I wanted to share it with some people and get some feedback. This is a gaming community and if I make music I want to put it in games, so this is a natural fit ;). This was a riff I came up with about a year ago on my guitar but it just didn't have the strong sound that keyboards have (at least not an acoustic guitar, and my electric is out of commission atm), so I got a drum machine going and I played it on some synth. If I ever get a job making games I definitely want to be involved in the music so this is kind of what I have in mind, plus I've been listening to quite a bit of the Silent Hill soundtracks so I've been digging the kinda spacey, minor stuff. Any feedback would be much appreciated, but keep in mind I'm not a sound designer so I don't know a whole lot about EQ & mixing :-p.

EDIT: Fixed the link so that it links to the right one that doesn't have the annoying spark at the beginning. Whoops!

I like it! But that cheesy drum beat needs to change..

 noted. Are you talking about the beat itself or the sound on it? I put a little bit of reverb & delay on it because I felt it sounded a lot better when it was by itself as it faded out at the end, but I also liked the simple & intimate sound it had before I added effects. If I were playing the drumset myself I think I'd change a few things and it wouldn't be the same thing looped over and over, plus it would definitely beat MIDI :-p

Well, the synthy sound is not very good, but I understand that good midi instruments can be hard to find.
BUT!
The composition was good!
And that's the important part.
But the drums... well, you already said about the drums, but yeah.
I think the beat is okay, and the sound is not powerful enough.
I think it would be better sounding if they were more powerful, but subdued.
And when there are those three same drum hits, that's good, but I think they would sound better if each of them got slightly quieter than the one before.
Y'know, like "10, 9, 8..." or something, instead of "10, 10, 10."
Also, instead of having one string instrument playing, have a few harmonising or something.
And instead of having one note end and the next one begin, you could sortof crossfade the notes a little, so it doesn't sound so mechanised.

But those are only minor points.
The whole thing is good.
I like it.
I can easily imagine hearing it in a game.

hehe, thanks :-p

If I put more time into it I could definitely give the drums not only a better feel but a better tone, something more electric & less acoustic is what I have in mind for this thing. Also the synth would be better -- I'm no piano wiz-kid but I can add some stuff if need be. The harmonizing idea also sounds good, and this chord progression is certainly friendly to harmonizing, much more than my usual. I'm able to display what I mean for the song better on guitar since I voice the melody better and do more things, but it certainly sounds better on keyboards/strings/synth, so I'll have to work on that. Thanks again for the input :)

btw Boggy, every time I see your icon I think it's of Adam Duritz, singer of Counting Crows :-p just thought I'd letcha know
