I need to find some free software for keeping virus and adware off my computer.

Do you guys know of any good ones? I don't wanna pay money for it... i just don't.

I downloaded some "fixed" ones thru bearshare but they just don't let me update to the latest list of viruses.....

Well if you have any suggestions I'll me most grateful. Please IM me if you don't think it's good posting such advice in a thread like this..

cheers

^What he said. I endorse those just as well. They're free and are basically all you'll need to keep your PC in good health.

Download windows defender, as its real-time spyware protection is quite good, and its scans are as well awsome and effective. Strangly enough it is made by Microsoft, for microsoft....Or rather Giant spyware whom was purchased by M$.

Ad-aware is good for when you are infected. Spybot is good for infection removal and its immunize feature is good to keep items out. Windows defender has a real-time componet that works well in blocking items, and its scans can remove some heavly intergrated peice of spyware better than the previous two, as it was made by M$ , for thier product.

yes but it earns 0 appreciation points because it is made by an evil monopolistic empire.

EDIT, @ Viper and mods
maybe we should set up a sticky and list all the good security products people should use to stop them getting infected and to raise awareness that free software is the best kind of software (especially open source).

Other than what's already been said:

Lavasoft AdAware SE 1.06b
PC Tools Spyware Doctor (if you can still find the free version)
PC Tools Antivirus (thorough but quite slow)
like HijackThis, Autoruns is a very handy tool to use, and I find it superior in most instances, but you need to know what you are doing in order to use it. Not for novices.

Actually, we had a long tunning software thread (I thought it was stickied) made by Nukeblaze. I'll see if I can find it.

Stan, Lavasoft AdAware SE 1.06b was the first thing listed.
