Every time I think of PS3 having a built-in 60GB HDD with Linux on it, I not only think of the amazing possibilities for gaming, but I also worry about things crashing. Since PS3 will have a lot of PC-like functionalities (from the sounds of it so far, E3 might change that...), do you guys think they'll have to include some kind of "system recovery" CD for the system in case you need/want to reformat? I'm not saying the hard drive is prone to crashing or it's going to be common that the OS is gonna screw up, but every computer these days comes with a system recovery of some kind so you can start a clean slate and some people like to do that habitually to keep their computers clear of muck. An in-OS formatting solution is likely, but what if you can't access the OS to begin with? Is it GG, and you just gotta ship it off?
I'm half asking about the possibility but I'm also asking for you guys' opinions on Sony including a boot disc or system recovery disc with the PS3.

I highly doubt they will include a recovery disk with the PS3, infact I am 99.99% sure they wont. That would add a small expense, show weakness, and im sure if it crashes or whatever happens you will have to send it to them to fix, or just insert another hard drive since you can just swap it with a new one.

if its a built in rom then there wouldn't be a need for that. except for firmware upgrades this would remain untouched. Sony have already shown that firmware upgrades are the way to go with PSP.

They could make you have to boot linux from a disk, like the PS2 linux, and that could be a recovery disk if need be, also keeps it from being easily hacked, two birds, one stone.

every WINDOWS computer these days comes with a system recovery of some kind so you can start a clean slatequalified!
If its running linux it will not be as near as suceptible as Winodws is to drive errors and filesystem issues. Sure you can make recovery boot images for linux, but they are more for a good nights sleep than anything else..... I also doubt they will provide a "system recovery" disc. The question is, when buying a hard drive will it be pre-formatted or will there be a need for the PS3 to format it. (and will linux be an install image, or a set of install cd's like most PC based apps/oses).

No.
If they made a bootdisk, it would be some static software, which couldn't be updated. Hackers could easily create a modified bootdisk, which would kinda crash Sony's anti-homebrew idea.

Or here's a thought, if it does need to be re-formatted, you simply download the image from the network (HUB or whatever they are going to call it)

But I'm thinking if your OS is perma-screwed and needs re-installing and you can't access the internet or anything, you can't use your PS3 to download a fix for your PS3, y'know what I mean? I guess Sony could make something available for regular PCs to download & burn a disc that would be a system recovery so people could download if they need/want it.

Hmm...Good question. I'm not sure, but what I can tell you is dispite the PSP having an operational OS, it didn't nor did Sony ever mention it coming with a boot CD. So I'm assuming the PS3 will follow in these footsteps. Maybe Sony has figured out a way to prevent any of these things from happening, or maybe they have a solution incase it does. I believe that is also one of the reasons for the firmware updates.
You beat me to it, Cliffbo. :)
