You know... while I don't exactly like the name "Wii", Nintendo did something smart.
Every gaming forum, EVERY gaming website, EVERYBODY is talking about it.
The publicity on this name will be unbelievable... if somebody didn't know about the Revo, they definitely will know about the "Wii".
And also, people in America think of peeing when they hear the name (I do! heehee), but in Japan they'll like it. In France they'll like it. (oui, anyone?) That means Canada too. Many people in foreign countries who don't speak English will like it as well.
Besides, eventually people (including me) will get used to it. While I think the Virgin Airlines/ Napster/ Google analogies are a bit bold, people will remember the name because it is so unique.
It also (If Nintendo accepts the humor in the name) will give a lighter hearted tone to the system, giving it a broader appeal- not just a hardcore gaming console- to a wider audience, which was Nintendo's goal all along.
Finally, there's an interview on Game Informer's site that gives me hope that there's cooler things to come. (Sorry, I can't post the link)
Over and out.

Publicity isn't always a good thing. Better to have no publicity than tons of negative publicity.

you know what I think, it doesn't matter what they woudl have called it.....it would still be all over every gaming site(at least every one that stays current with news) They coudl have called it somethign more/less controversial and it still shoudl be the top discussion of said sites.......why? because if it is not, then said sites are not really doing their job.
They could have called it the Fork, or hte Gamecube 2.5 and...well you shoudl get the idea by now. I think they may have gotten increased exposure due to the un-referenced hidden meansing that people are using, but again, no bigger than bananaphone/baterang or revmote, or anythign else that is BIG news.

Agree strongly on this topic...it was a great marketing strategy, even with a funny name it got the attention of many. I can say phenomenal even though a bigger slice is pissed off right now with the Wii lol.
It was a damned name that got into the mindset of everyone.
The name itself is a revolution ;)

well, I never said I loved the name, I just had to accept it (the painful truth that is Wii). It would suck more if Nintendo says "wii named it such because wii wanted to and wii can"

I will never like it, and I will never accept it. It will always be Revolution for me, and I refuse to refer to it as Wii.

lol... the name sucks in every country. It sucks today, it sucks tomorrow. It sucks in english, german, japanese (ask lucent beam), the only place it might get any acceptance is in france, where it could double as "yes", but it's still ghey there also.

Wii is an awesome name. Let's all pronounce it as "wha - too" as early as possible so it becomes a generally accepted pronunciation. It sounds cool.
Viral Mutation, maybe you should get rid of that "!" unless it is meant as a factorial (4! = 4*3*2*1 = 24). It just annoys me. :D

Well any publicity is good publicity, but that doesn't change the fact that the name sucks, and that those people who may have heard about the Rev, but don't crawl the internet looking for info may have no clue at launch that the Wii is the Rev.

a few of my friends who were stating to get into the rev aren't into it cause of wii. i mean u know people see this people think kiddy and i don't think its going to help themout. its like in cooking people taste with there eyes first and if it don't look good even if the food taste great they still won't eat it.

By the way, this isn't giving Nintendo's console any more public attention. The only people aware of this name change, the people making such an uproar over it, are all of the people who knew about Rev. to begin with. These aren't the new audience Nintendo is targeting. It's the people who already know about Revolution and have probably already decided whether to get one or not. A stupid name like Wii may not make them change their minds, but to all who have said this is getting Nintendo the hype they need - you're wrong.

I wouldn't say the 'only' people, some people may have told people about the name cahnge that didn't know in the first place. Well, not really name change, but that is how it is taken.

Hype? It's the marketing campaign that will create the hype. But the name is perfect for when that time comes around. It automatically creates interest, especially if Nintendo does it right. People seeing "W i i " everywhere will be wondering what the hell it about. Arousing curiosity is a damn good strategy.
Long live the Wii.

Yes, 'if' they use it right it could work, but I don't think it would have the same effect Revolution could have. They could do SO MUCH with the Revolotion name.

I really don't think so. I mean, revolution is revolution. But just look at the posts on this forum. Wii is ALREADY everywhere. You insert it into any sentence and it is an instant catchphrase.
It isn't like the public hasn't seen any product/organization claiming to be a "Revolution". I mean commercials are always "revolutionary" this "revolution" that. It is easy to just call your product a revolution. But as I said before, the name "Wii" is a revolution without even saying it. That is where the magic lies.

^^Yes YOU don't think.
Edit:
There's Revolution Studios, Revolution X, and there's revolution everywhere. Where is there no Revolution? First there has to actually be a revolution, but right now it has to show it is a revolution.

yes your right, everyone is talking about it.... but not in a possitive way. Nintendo aren't out to win the next gen market anyway, theyre after being the second choice console that people can afford.

Most of the people who are saying "its kiddy" or are turned off by it are of that niche gaming group that need to go play their 360's and PS3's if they're so upset.
And for the record, I play to have all 3 systems. I already have a 360.
And most of the reactions we're hearing are coming from hardcore gamers. Oh, and we haven't even seen the advertising campaign yet nor the games or whatever other secrets there might be.
Also, some of you are complaining about having to say "Lets go play the Wii." Well, personally, I've never said "Lets go play the GameCube, or Lets go play the 360." I just say "Wanna play Smash Bros?" or "Wanna play some Fight Night?" Etc. etc. The only two places I use the names much are on the net in forums and at the store. And the majority of the people Nintendo are trying to attract don't visit gaming forums.

You have casual gamers, and then you have the world. Everybody else who doesn't play games. What percentage are we? Also who are we to actually know and predict that the name "Wii" doesn't work? Yes a bunch of gamers who don't like "Wii" are already experts on the subject.

All I have to say is, I see so many of the same people bashing the name who also bashed the controller. To me, that already gives them no credibility in my eyes.

why people still bash the controller, i could say the same thing about baterang, or welcome chang3, and it definately arguable.

For whatever reason, I don't think of urine when I hear "wee." Perhaps that is because I have never called urine "wee."

I have never bashed the remote, even though I still think that it may not be a good thing. It will be great if used correctly, but very bad if not. Even though I don't think that was targeted to me.
