Hm, 10k to 15k polys for chars isnt really much, is it? Reading stuff like 3mil poly scenes in HS at B3D (I cant remember if it was 3mil per sec or per frame, but if it was per sec, then it would equal 50k^^), that would mean 200 people on screen (w/o environment), which are never seen in GeoW. I cant tell, how much polys the environments are, but surely not that much
It was 3 million per frame, and that was including multiple passes like shadow map passes and Z-Prepass and so on. And compared to environments, character polygons are indeed expensive because they're skinned, they're morph-blended, they're animated and possibly full-body IK'ed... Environments are simple by comparison, and that's why it's often easier to get more detail and quality on them. Of course, if you have fillrate limitations, then characters are probably safer because they don't individually take up a whole lot of the screen. Of course, that's why Xenos and RSX even more so are heavier on texel fillrate over pixel fillrate.

Either way, you can't really compare the 3 mil polygon scenes quite so directly to 10-15k polygon characters. Gears pushes a lot of insanely high-res textures, which is very straightforward for artists, but has the potential to be wasteful of resources, and I particularly think so with environments. The art style in Gears seems to prefer the use of fine, but clear lines and grooves to accentuate detail, and for that, the pipeline they use is rather well suited.

That really depends. When physics play a part and deformation is a big part of the game, polygons are extremely important.
High polygon density and physics often reeeeaally don't mix, though. That's the sort of thing that gets people stuck on a blade of grass or flying off into the heavens because he ran too fast and stepped on the edge of a polygon. Funny enough, neither does extremely low polygon density, either, which can cause a lot of missed collisions and people falling through the floor. So whatever it is visually, it really can't be quite the same in the physics geometry. And things like terrain deformations aren't really high-frequency effects, so that's actually not that big a deal whether you have dense or not-so-dense geometry.

edit: i played Gears tonite at broinlaws house i found it very clumsy & slow the graphics on the soldiers were good but everything else was not spectacular. i think R:FOM is so much more fluid & fun (i did not play online though) and if KZ cant beat those Graphics ill.... well ill do something lol

it is as smooth online as it is offline. in fact, you can't tell the difference at all. you have to look if you see names above the other characters to know if you are online or not. :thumbl:

as for KZ, I have always said that Resistance is the bar to beat. if thy could only add to what Resistance is, then mission accomplished; they would have an amazing product on their hands. technically, Res. is spectacular- especially for a launch game on such a system as PS3. and it is that that gave me high hopes for KZ. Halo? don't make me laugh. Res. already pisses all over that, imo. and Killzone will be the new bar to leap over. :devious:

PS. I heard that there are still people playing KZ online. if true, that is amazing- and it goes to show.

I can only imagine Famitsu breaking such news, but this isn't a genre they would be interested in. I think one fo the US mags broke something similar during a past E3, so that could happen. having said that, I doubt Sony will let anyone peep before they themselves show it. expect mags, blogs, sites and TV to have a Killzone fest after the unveiling- whether officially supported or not.

that is a good point. some games look shitty in MP mode compared to their SP mode like Half-Life 2 (or so I've heard), but judging from the past Halos, both modes didn't look much different. oh, well.

Yeah, the expectation is amazing because of a number of quite different reasons. But those who expect prerendered-like quality and those who have big expectations on Guerrilla Games seeing what they could produce on PS2 are the ones who are creating the extreme hype. I still don't want to get too excited yet, but it's hard to resist.

I must admit I am extremely excited to see how this game ends up for a few reasons. I enjoyed the first title online because the single player experience was very shallow, but then I instantaneously bought the PSP title. Well that title really turned out great online and offline. The story for the offline was pretty good and I'm only hoping for a better game on the PS3. This title may just force me into buying a PS3, but I may force myself to resist it.

Not a looker, but looks rather fun. Destructible environments, so you blow stuff up, bricks fly everywhere, hit a button time reverses and the bricks and wood all flys back into place. It's pretty groovy.
