well its official then.

Following confusion over the technical specifications of the two versions of the PS3 Sony plans to launch, SCEA president Kaz Hirai has confirmed that the 20GB model will not feature HDMI output or data card inputs.

In an interview with CNN Money, Hirai said: "We felt that if you want to save something on your Memory Stick, most people have those readers on their PC, which is easily adaptable to the PlayStation 3 with a USB cord."

"The only difference is HDMI - and at this point, I don't think many people's TV's have that. The ultimate result, to my eyes anyway, is there's not a discernable difference between what you get between HDMI and other forms of high definition."

There is still some confusion over whether the 20GB PS3 will feature wi-fi functionality - according to a spec sheet issued by Sony, it will only be incorporated into the 60GB model. Neither Hirai's comments nor those made earlier by Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison have cleared up the issue.

Hirai went on to defend the price point for the PS3, which will retail for $499 / €499 for the 60GB version and $599 / €599 for the 20GB model. He dismissed suggestions that the price is too high, stating: "I think when you look at what we put into the box - Cell, Blu-Ray, backwards compatibility, the ability to go online - I think it's a very compelling package for consumers. The totality of what we bring to the table makes it a good value for consumers."

"What we're presenting to consumers is future-proofed. It's not going to fall by the wayside," he added.

Hirai went on to say that he is confident Sony will meet its targets of shipping four million PS3s around the globe by the end of the year, with a further two million to follow by April.

"We have the advantage of manufacturing our own chips. Most of the PlayStation 3's core components are manufactured in-house. The decision to give the go order comes when we're getting good yields."

"Obviously, the sooner the better, but we're not at the mercy of someone else."

Microsoft's Peter Moore isn't so sure Sony can meet its manufacturing targets, as he told us earlier - we'll be bringing you the full interview later today.

Good stuff Cliffbo-I would defintely be more satisfied if the $5oo one has wi-fi in it..THen again besides the price-I think I'll wait just to avoid any "issues" the early PS3 might have...U can't knock them tho, PS3 probably does cost more than $600 to make than what their selling it for-it's still damn expensive though...

Alrite, if the $499 doesn't have Wifi, it still has a normal wired network adaptor right?

Meanwhile another Sony VP is saying they can't get components for Blu-Ray.

And the HDMI comment is contracticted two paragraphs later when he says it's future proofed--that was the whole point of waiting for the latest HDMI spec was it not? I personally don't care that much since I'm going to buy the $600 unit, but still seems like BS to me. Granted I agree it won't impact many people at first, but I still think it's a dumb decision.

I definitely will get the $600 unit and wait for the 1080p hdtv price drop.

Sony doesn't make all, if any, parts of the Blu-ray laser. He said most, not all, and before he just said chips.

I want them to clarify the Wi-Fi (not sure why they wouldn't) because that is the only thing that makes any differnce at all to me between the 2 packages.

I agree, the built-in WiFi is a big deal to a lot of people, but that may be the very reason they don't include it - not because it would cost them much, but because it's another way to further differentiate the two and make the $100 differential seem all the more 'worth it.'

It looks like my dream of hooking up my 160GB HDD for my PC and it WORKING may come to fruition.

Also, technically speaking there probably isn't much keeping people from using a USB WiFi adapter with the base PS3.

It all depends on what sort of USB devices will be supported.

For me WiFi isn't all that important (no PSP or WiFi network), but the card reader is nice and the HDMI is important. I'll also be upgrading my home network to gigabit ethernet anyway.

I'm honestly thinking about getting the 499usd version. I have a usb cable to compensate for a potential lack of wi-fi, HD (at least 1080p) isn't gonna happen for me for a gooooood whiiile, and I don't even have that many different kinds of memory cards and devices to put into that many slots. 4 USB ports is good enough for me. Still get internet browsing and everything else....

I think Ill just wait untill a cheaper version with everything in it becomes available...-jus so I can have everything-because HDMI and wi-fi isn't going to be that important especially to gaming. It feels good to have in it their tho, lol...

thw Wi-Fi part was clarified with that Ken+ some other guy interview. they said with the standard pack, you can connect PSP through a USB cable and you'll have all the functions.

plus, PS3's HDDs are upgradable by normal PC HDDs. so you can by something larger off the shelf and upgrade it to however big you want it to bee. that is very welcomed indeed.

that done very little in the way of true clarifacation.

So all the media ports are basicly missing ? ms , sd and other slots are now gone ?

That could add up to alot of money
