You hope for too much too soon.
for the very first time, a sony console has a common approach on developping a game: C++ (even for the SPUs) and OpenGL.
So it IS very easy to push the PS3 to its boundaries, look at the past gen, the XBox was easy to develop for, and the result was Halo at the launch, the gamecube too => ludgi mantion. all these games were almost pushing the limits of each machine, not at 100% but almost.
Just to settle things up, the two PS2 vector processors were assembly-based for programing, and because of that the line-up titles (RR5, Orphen...) were not using them AT ALL.

It's a whole lot more complex than that. Simplier tools does not grant immediate results like that. You still have a learning curve to overcome. Infact, these games haven't even been launched yet. We have like six months before we see anything final on the PS3. I mean, c'mon! You guys are like race horses on speed.
Oh, and Halo was not all that great looking, IMO. Colorful, it most definitely was. But I saw nothing special about it. If you need to mention something looking fantastic, I'd suggest something like The Chronicles of Riddick.

why is it too much to hope for what they promised?
The footage looks good, but not great. Hopefully it will in 6 months.

can we really say wait and see? it is almost sure that motorstorm will not look better than that, but i still believe that in the next 2-3 years the things are going to evolve, at least i hope so... but this thread is about motorstorm and for it, the things are settled, it IS far behind what they showed a year ago, and it will be on sell 6 months from now.

I am disappointed in this game as much as I got disappointed seeing Tekken6 trailer at the Sony conference. What a drag.

Yoshaw,
It is good to know that I am not the only one that is disappointed in the Tekken trailer and Motorstorm. Yes, indeed. It is a big drag. I had hoped that in a year's time the game makers could have produced something better.

You guys need to relax, this game will look better over time. I agree that Tekken didn't look great, but NamcoBandai devs are on par with Sega devs right and if Virtua Figther 5 looks that good, I expect no less from Tekken 6.
We get dirty with Evolution Studios next-gen racer.
by Jeff Haynes
May 11, 2006 - So where was MotorStorm? That was the question that everyone asked yesterday; we even put up a news story announcing its disappearance from the show, as it missed both the press conference and the first day of the show. Mysteriously, however, as attendees arrived on the second day, there MotorStorm was, next to Sonic the Hedgehog in the Sony booth. We went to check out the game and get the story behind its sudden arrival.
According to Paul Hollywood, Art Director at Evolution Studios, the development of the game has been rather rapid in the past few days. In fact, they've been working so much on the title that they just received the latest build of the game that's currently on the show floor from England last night, so they quickly brought it over to the convention center and set it up. While the build was only about fifty percent complete, it was showing off a ton of effects, such as real time deformation of the track, HDR and motion blurring, tone mapping on the cars and the mud to show the additional layer of dirt that gets caked on vehicles, and depth of field. While Hollywood stated that it's been difficult to get the game up to the level of presentation that was shown at last year's Sony press conference, he thought that what they had was pretty impressive so far.
Once we jumped behind the wheel, it was pretty hard to disagree with him. The game itself will be set in Monument Valley at the MotorStorm Festival, a massive multi-sensory event out in. Think Burning Man meets Coachella meets off-road racing and you get the sense of what the designers are planning for the game. The festival will play as a hub for you in-between races, which will constantly have music playing in the background, akin to a live concert experience. While Hollywood couldn't name any musical acts that will be part of the game, he admitted that a number of rock groups and DJs have been lined up to be part of the soundtrack. He did mention that players will be able to take any CD they own and put it into their PS3s, and the game will "live-ify" the disc, making any music sound as if it's being performed on a mainstage at a concert.
There will be thirty five different vehicles in the game, separated into seven different classes of machine such as dirt bikes, ATVs, buggies, big rigs and other cars. You'll select a car and take them onto any one of twelve tracks, each of which will have multiple routes that you can take. Some of the cars, like the motorcycles, may be able to take a higher route that is technically difficult, but potentially a large shortcut around the track. Hollywood also alluded to the possibility that there will be downloadable tracks and cars that Evolution Studios will offer after the game has been launched.
The thing we noticed once we got in was that the game is incredibly fun to play and easy to get used to. The X button was used for acceleration, while the square button was used as a brake or to go in reverse. The L2 and R2 buttons could be used to look behind you or to the sides, which was necessary to avoid contact at high speeds or see who might be challenging you. The R1 button provided you with a nitro boost, which propelled you down the track at breakneck speed. While you had four of these boosts at the start of the race, Hollywood cautioned that the computer driven opponents did as well, so you really had to time when you were going to use a boost and when you weren't.
This was particularly true, as not only were the computer opponents intelligent enough to know when they were trailing in a race and when they should try to make their move, they were also crafty enough to figure out the best time to attempt to disable their competition. In fact, there was one particular car that decided to single out my buggy and literally rammed me into a cliff wall three times, fully flipping my vehicle over and popping its wheels off. While I did respawn, and the number of lives were infinite for the demo, Hollywood alluded to the fact that there would be a certain amount given to each player and that it'd be tuned as they developed the game.
The implementation of Havok for the physics really was impressive as other competitors took out fellow drivers -- at one point, three drivers teamed up to drive the big rig into concrete barriers, at which point it exploded into a shower of sparks and car parts. Even the rogue wheels of this truck sank into some of the ruts of the dirt where previous cars had driven before firmly coming to rest in the mud. Even better were some of the celebrations and curses that were hurled at cars. Some drivers flipped off other racers, while some shook their fist. One guy on an ATV grabbed his crotch as he taunted a wreck that he passed. Obviously not one for the kids, but a lot of amusement for the adults.
MotorStorm is still planned for the launch, and we'll have more info whenever it's released.

The game is not FAR away from the E3 demo?? The game looks pretty damn good especially at 50%. The E3 target just looks more crispy and clearer than this early build which is expected and understandable. Tell me, if First generation games (that aren't even done yet btw) are all going to match Killzone and MotorStorm targets-then what the hell comes after that? U guys are being too impatient-u dont HAVE to buy a PS3 at launch!!! Wait untill 07 till the big gunz come out fellas...
OKay, you can find the MotorStorm video, amongst others, at http://e3videos.killerrabbits.net.

In fast games such as racing, great lighting and mood effects like in Need for Speed are far more important that high polygon models like in Project Gotham Racing 3.
Personally, I think if they threw more dust and mud around, I would stop being so bitchy.

Hey Altares, I think I'm understanding you here, but correct me if I'm answering the wrong question... on why they kept it secret so long, I assume you mean why did it just show today, and why didn't SONY show it on monday. The answer to that question is simple. The build of the game that became playable at the show today arrived today from over the pond, so it hasn't been here to be seen or to be played, and since this build is only at 50% completion, it was probably a bad idea to simply bring canned footage of an older build or even to bring the older build itself.

Personally i doubt its going to improve much in 6 month time. But we'll see in 6 month :D
the game itself looks kinda boring..
boring? did you read IGN's impression? if this is boring then i dont know what you call traditional racing games
i know Motorstorm is far from what we saw last year and obviously it was foulish to think otherwise, but its still got some very impressive highly original stuff going on and the gameplay seems very hectic, i cant wait to play it and the fact its a launch game makes me even happier
i just cant but think why-o-why did Sony go so crazy overboard with last year videos and in case of motorstorm and killzone suggesting gameplay, they made it so hard for themselves and for the fans, plus they handed the competition something to fight them with, ah i can already see J Allard singing "i mean look at last's year motorstorm, where is it now?" just like he did with the Namco Girl example
I'm downloading the torrent now to have a wee look. I'm really getting sick of the attitude of some people around here, they're expecting absolute miracles. If you're so frustrated go and vent it somewhere else please, I'm getting a little tired reading negative post after negative post.

Huh!
What the fudge are you on about? Don't you go on comparing the likes of you with my choices, alright!
I love Motorstorm even in it's present state just like I love Tekken6. The disappointment is temporary for me unlike you who goes on writing essays in every thread like an agenda pusher. I love Tekken6 regardless and I'd love Motorstorm regardless.
My drag is only that I have to wait till launch to see Tekken6 look as good as VF5. Same drag with Motorstorm, 6 months and it'll be polished like a great gameplay just like Gamespot and IGN are reporting.
To me graphics aren't the end of the world like you. So yea, whatever!

I liked the crashes and the presenter said it's just a fraction of what'll be available in the final game. Whoa! Cool!
Also the blur effects while boost was on were nice! Still downloading the jeux-france vid so don't know about that yet. Any indications of the Lava level?

Well I think if the speed of the game is like that it' s because the devs wished as they said in Frosty's interview to make more than a simple rally racing game, they want to make " rally versus " game and they said that the mud affects the vehicules and slow them. Also I don't know if all the tracks are like in the demo but they seem to be not really long but instead there are several laps.
to make the game more fun and replayable. Ican imagine with 4 players at wonce could be fun.

The mud doesnt seem to be as beautiful as it supposed to be.
i expected depp tons of muds.
HDR is not even so bright as the other games like Getaway, Heavenly sword,
This is a big let down. not to mention the vichles doesnt move reastically as they supposed to be.
The videos shown so far are just a playable demo. The game isn't finished yet. If you watch Frost's video you can hear the developer say that there is still lots of work to do and that the graphics will be improved.

Actually, I do expect much improvement in six months, but that's not what I was implying at all. I was responding in general since we don't even have a finished game for launch - let alone one at this quality. Even by launch, I still consider MotorStorm to be an ambitious title. But it is nothing I don't see achievable by the PS3. The leap from last-gen to the '05 E3 trailer is definitely within range of realization. It's just that people are so in a hurry to see this level of detail that their faith rests on early development and launch titles, and I just don't see that possible if this is considered a great achievement for the console.
Anyway this is the best game footage I've seen of this game.
Yesterday I saw another that disapointed me a lot.
But it was the quality of the video I guess.
I would like to see a HD version of a motorstorm game footage to really see the graphics.

Holy shit!
Why is everyone calling Sony a liar? I honestly thought this vid reminded me of the footage they showed last year!
Add a few more cars, improve the mud a bit and it's there!
Wow, this was just a great experience WATCHING it! And only 50% done!
The crashes, the AI reaction to environments (bikers getting scared when bigger vehicles approach) the physics are truly next-gen.
Excellent, EXCELLENT stuff.
C'mon Sony, don't be shy...Show us more of this type of thing! ;)

I thought the footage was impressive considering the game is 50 PERCENT COMPLETE! I was overall disappointed by the Sony E3 conference, but not because of the games I just thought the games displayed and the pace of the presentation could have been done better.
Overall I was impressed with the game footage, most of the half completed PS3games were on par with the 2nd gen 360 games and that say's a lot for the system. Motorstorm will be close or meet the E3 footage when you see the final version of the game, I'm basing this off the quality of the early build.
I think a lot of folks are selling Sony short, just give things some time.
Hopefully Sony will prove the power of BD and the motion sensor controller. Peace
I was also pretty impressed with footage of Motorstorm, especially given the fact that it's only 50% complete. My only real problem is a gameplay issue and that is I hope it's faster when it's finally released, as it looks a little slow.
I'd really like to have an answer on this: does motorstorm E3 2K6 matches motorstorm GDC2K6 ?
On the video of E3 2K6 it seems to be vary far from GDC.
Is it the quality of the footage or what ?
