We've seen the ps3 interface (see the thread) but, where is the so promised linux OS? they promised it will be included with each and every hdd, and now that the hard drive is an integral part of the design, they simply threw the concept away?! what do you think?

The globe is what you are looking for, nothing else. This is not a PC.

in fact, i was hoping for using the cell for applications such as very fast encoding videos (imagine 40 times the speed of a PC) ...etc I'm just a little pissed off...

Yeah video encoding would be nice for PS3.

Oh, god... more people who thought PS3 running on Linux meant a genuine Linux distro and commandline. I recall being regarded a dissenter from the crowd when I said it wouldn't be anything more than a "Linux-based kernel" that drives something else entirely.

People just assumed so much from the name "Linux." Little hint -- there was only one "announcement" that there would be a full-blown Linux front-end on the PS3. That "announcement" was made on April 1st, by a minor press outlet involving nobody from Sony.

I was just going to resurrect that very same post. I, too, think people were expecting way too much from this Linux OS. After using the PSP many times over, I had a vivid idea as to the type of OS we would be getting. For Sony to allow consumers to dive that deep into the OS, they could possibly break through a few security walls. Entertainment was as far out as I was visioning of the OS, nothing more and nothing less.

supposing there was a full fledged os of linux, what the hell would we do with it? besides teh leet haxors cracking the system, I don't really know the utility of that. It's an entertainment system. I'm with cpiasminc on this one, cause you know, he makes sense.

I had been hoping that the PS3 would double as a linux based computer so that if you did not want to play a game you could boot it up in another mode and have access to a GUI for linux, install some applications, and do some cool stuff with the power of the cell chip. For example, if you wanted to do some FOLDING AT HOME with your console while you were not gaming.

At the very least I hope the system will allow for basic applications to be installed like email and web-browsing.

I know I know lol... Sure it may just be a Linux-based kernel, but why not make that internal in the system? The way sony announced it basicly said linux would be on the HDD and if it was just the kernal I see no reason it would need to be on the HDD.

You're not following me at all, are you?

If there is a Linux OS, which is more than possible at this point, that OS will not be located in any other place except the globe icon. It is how you will browse the web. The GUI looks no different from the one on a PC when opned. The only difference is its limited functionality. Looking at the PSP, I can tell you that low level settings will be accessible - like front, home page, temporary folders, favorites, etc., etc.. I doubt you're going to get anything major to allow you to dive deep into the core. You only get what is neccessary when surfing the web. And yes, email is allowed if you were wondering about that. Anything outside of the basics, or rather entertainment, and I can tell you that it's close to dreaming than anything else.

Sony will not provide a full-fledged Linux OS (with X11, KDE and the like) from the start, I agree with you. But they did provide this, as an add-on, for PS2 (the Net Yarooze) so there is still a slim chance that this would happen down the road (in 2 or 3 years, maybe). If not, I am confident that we will still be able to run a Linux distro from the hard disk before the end of 2008, due to hackers efforts. Linux is already running on nearly everything (even on the Nintendo DS !), the Xbox 1 was for a time a very cheap platform to run Linux, 360 protection has been partially cracked already, PS3 will follow. But, for these new online consoles, running Linux (and thus modifying the console) will probably mean loosing the access to XboxLive/Playstation Network, so people willing to go this route would have to buy 2 PS3. Considering the power in Cell for video compression and manipulation, I am quite sure some of us would be interested (I would be, for sure).

Linux will NOT jsut be useed for web browsing an email, thats kind of rediculous.
The PS3 OS will handle such things.....it woudl be a waste of resources to add linux jsut for web and email.
IF by chance they don't offer a fully fledged OS(I think they will), then teh kernel will be used to do such things as MEDIA MANAGEMENT(audio/video encoding, etc. etc.)

Uhm... Guys, I think you've misunderstood...

- PS3 has Linux installed and programming is allowed. License fees are not required for individual developers. Licensed PS3 game developers can get SDK and technical support by SCE, but Linux programmers while not having to pay a license fee, obviously won't get as much support. In Linux, Cell is under the hardware layer of the OS supervisor, but things including SPEs are expected to be open to developers. Didn't show off non-game apps at E3, because well, it's E3..
