View Full Version : Any final requests?

Ok well tomorrow's the last day, and I was wondering whether there were any specific requests anyone had for coverage.

I've got a mission to get more on the UI/interface at this point, but not sure what else people might want. I figure I'll have roughly three 'good' hours to get stuff, and a lot can be done in that time before I need to start writing and such, but I'm wondering what you guys might be most interested in.

Frosty of course has a ton of video footage, so the less 'visually' based the information you want, probably the ore use I would be in answering any questions.

Plus, if anyone has any general questions right now, feel free to ask, since I'm online for the next hur as I put an Insomniac/Resistance article up.

Is ANYONE talking about the RSX? Any new information?

Well, I've only asked the Insomniac guys about it so far, and the response is that 'its great.' Take that however you will. ;)

I'm honestly not expecting any more than that from any of these folk to tell you the truth. Everyone's talkative, but they're still mindful of NDAs.

Shoud you have time tomorrow, I have some questions ready :-)

* Episodic content: will any of the game currently in development have some form of episodic content after their release ? New levels, maps, vehicles, scenarios ? For free, or for a fee ? Are the developpers thinking about it already, or is it too soon ?

* Media connectivity: did Sony have any plan to play video from a PC harddrive (where the P2P client is :-D), via the PS3, to the TV ? Video or diaporamas actually. Using WiFi for instance, that would be nice. In the same domain, Sony at one time tried in Japan the PSX, which was a mix between a Tivo and a PS2, would they have any (future) plan for this for PS3 ?

* PSP support in game: Sony demoed the PSP with a racing game as a way to see vehicles behind you, are some developpers working on similar PSP-PS3 interactivity for games currently in development ?

Thanks by advance XB for any answer you may extort from them ;-)

Is anyone talking about the online aspect (acheivement-like points, will Sony be helping to build the network's infrastructure or are they going to leave that up to the individual devs, and if they go more hands off does that mean we are going to have to be charged by each company that makes games)?

Also, can you stop by BioWare and ask them why they have such an aversion to Sony? I really like their games and it would be nice to see them go multi-platform.

Here you have some questions.

Have you seen any demo running on the "retail box" or are they just using dev kits?
Have you met anyone: Sony rep. or whatever who can confirm that the retail box runs as quite as the PSTwo?
Do you know if the PS3s on display are just empty boxes or do they contain real stuff, can you take a close up picture of the vent holes or just steal a box for later examination? (just put it under your shirt and run)
Have you asked the devs if they received the final dev kits which were about to ship right now? It would be interesting to hear if any team have higher priority than others. If they received the final kits, ask them if the kits have any performance improvements.

I'm looking forward to more articles, keep up the good work!!!! :whip:

Thanks xb for the on-hand coverage at E3 ^_^

I have several questions regarding the new ps3 controller. I don't know if you can answer them all but here we go:

1) Do all the playable PS3 games use the new PS3 controller? Does there any games that were relying on (or benefiting) the rumble feature of DS2, which is now missing in the new controller?

2) How does the analogue stick feel compared to DS2 in terms of the gripe, the location, and the spring force?

3) Is the change from 8-bit to 10-bit precision for the analogue sticks perceivable in your playing experience?
I will give you an example here. A lot people seem to prefer the xbox controller to the DS2 when it comes to aiming in a FPS. I don't own an xbox or 360, so I don't know how they compare. But I do a have a problem with DS2 in a few FPS on PS2 (like Black, Killzone) It is either too loose aiming or too slow turning. But I always believe it is a software fault rather than a hardware one, but I am not sure (to me, the mapping between the analogue stick movement to the screen movement always seems to be linear relationship, but I think a exponential-ish relationship is more appropriate.)
So will you able to comment on this based on your experience with Resistance?

4) I have a slight complain about the L3 and R3 button of the DS2. When you are doing some intense movement with the analogue sticks, it is very possible that the L3/R3 button would get accidentally pressed.
(For example, when trying to do a hard turn in Ace Combat series as the speaker is screaming "Missile Warning")
Do you feel that this issue is improved in the new controller?

5) How do the triggers feel in the new controller? Personally, I am not a big fan of triggers. I can see its usefulness in some situation, but I prefer the versatility of an analogue button. So can you do the following with the new controller without feeling awkward?
- Simultaneously press L2/R2 with another button (eg, L1+L2, or L2+R2)
- Tab the L2/R2 quickly (double clicking it for example)

6) What is the technical reason of the exclusivity between motion-sense and rumble feature?
(I am hoping to get answer where I can say "Ok, Sony, you picked the right decision")

Good questions everyone and I'll see what I can do.

Realistically, Arnaud I think I'll only have a chance at your first question, but I'll see if I can!

Kagai I can probably get yours answered at the same time I get Arnauds answered (if I get it answered).

Crossbar I'll see what I can find out on a working prototype at the show; I actually asked someone if the boxes were empty casings and they didn't know. Maybe I'll have to do some detective work; but I'd be conservative and assume they're empty. I'm worried I may have lost my chance to ask devs about the kits, but I'll see if I can track some down tomorrow. If not I can try to pursue other channels.

Amurant I actually feel I can answer some of your questions even now, as I've taken an interest in the controller myself.

Firstly, yes they all use the DS3 - to my knowledge no game demo'd used the rumble feature before, and if so it's clearly gone now. I would suspect though that if the rumble feature were still there, a number of the titles would eventually make use of it.

The analog sticks feel similar to the PS2's, but I'll have to spend some time again tomorrow to really think over any possible differences. The sticks went to 10-bit? That piece of kowledge skipped over me until now, but indeed I did notice that playing Resistance the stick movements were quite precise. You could basically get the reticle anywhere you needed it with adequate confidence.

I have the same problem you do with accidently pressing R3/L3 at times, but it's hard to know if that's just because my controllers are so old. In the case of my PS3 experiences, it hasn't been a problem thus far. i'll get the controller in my hand again tomorrow though and really think about these things consciously.

The triggers are decent. I don't know if the shape could be better, but I prefer them to a lot of triggers I've experienced, and I'm a fan of their being analog.

I don't think there is a solid technical or engineering reason for the mutual exclusivity; rather I think that Sony feels against a wall with the Immersion lawsuit, and they are preparing to remove rumble functionality from their future controllers and replace it with, well inthis case, motion sensitivity. But from an engineering standpoint, maybe it would be difficult to include a rumble feature that wouldn't mess up any motion sensing required by the controller in a game tat utilized both.

The first reason I ave is my theory, the second reason my best rationalization. :smoke:

Oh man you guys are overwhelming me here, LOL. :)

Saibo I'll see what I can find out, but the problem with a lot of PS3-direct questions is that there's not really a Sony exec available on the floor; they're all cloistered off somewhere. Hell I don't even know if they're still on the premises.

Antunk, welcome to the forum. Yeah the key development points I asked of the Insomniac and Evolution devs are already integrated into the articles (SPE useage, graphic effects, etc...); they both also are in love with the Cell, though I mean I just thought it'd sound cheesy to include that. I may be able to upload the video of the interviews for you Sunday (I need a transflash adaptor), but have your ears ready for a lot of background noise. ;)

I do have another full written interview on the way though - I'm thinking of putting it up next week - that speaks to a certain developer that has been pretty proactive about exploring the systems capabilities.

@Teeda and venomv: I'll see what I can learn.

Please take a look at this:

Notice the little black thing on the back of the controller, just below the USB port. What the hell is that? Can any of you capture a close up of the controller's back?

I'll try to VG, but there are these 'grips' on th econtrollers that I believe will obscure it. Look at the two controller shots in my photoblog to see what I mean.

A video+traditional review of the PS3 XMB, opening up all of the tabs, to show us what's in there.
Also, I'd like a shot of the entire E-mpire crew, WITH FORUM NAMES.

I also wonder if they are holding any info on Ni-Oh till TGS as I didn't hear or see anything on that title at E3.

Also, what is this about Alan Wake being PC and 360 only? Am I off my nut or didn't they show a demo of that on the PS3 last year?

Powercell

Also, could you ask the MotorStorm developers if they plan on supporting the new Logitech G25 Racing Wheel, and its full force feedback capabilities?

You might as well ask if they're support the old PS2 steering wheels as well.

Please ask this question.

Powercell, great question, but it's too late for that I'm afraid...

I can probably email them after the show and have that question answered though.

Sephiroth, I *do* have footge of the crossbar interface, but it'll be two days or so before I can upload it. Until then, I'll put a blurry shot of it up.

I have footage of PS3's media interface that I will post tonight if my computer allows. I only saw one PS3 on the floor that was in it's final case. All the units on the floor were dev kits. They were stacked on top of each other in the center of each row.

Oh yeah, and from left to right, Jordan (Hylian Advocate), me (frosty), Angela (Lucent Beam), and Mike (the other cameraman)
