View Full Version : no "lame" verion for UK
the boney king of nowhere.

Sony won't be releasing the 20GB version of its PS3 when the console launches in the UK on 17 November, according to one high street retailer.
Sony announced at its E3 conference on Monday that it would be launching its PS2 successor in two different versions - a premium, 60GB hard drive package and a less expensive 20GB version that, in addition to the smaller storage device, would also lack some key features.
However, while UK games store gamestation is already offering pre-orders for Sony's new machine, its customers are only able to put a holding deposit down on the more expensive 60GB model, which it has marked up at a price of £425.
When we contacted gamestation to ask why it wasn't taking pre-orders for the 20GB deal, we were told in no uncertain terms that it was because Sony wouldn't be releasing the slightly more wallet-friendly bundle in the UK.
We weren't offered any explanation as to why the 20GB would be unavailable, so we'll just have to wait for Monday morning when Sony will hopefully throw some light on the matter.
i'm quite pleased with this, it means that no-one over here will be left with the rubbish version, which also requires WIRED controllers!

i'm quite pleased with this, it means that no-one over here will be left with the rubbish version, which also requires WIRED controllers! No, it does not. That's not true at all. Controllers use Bluetooth. Every single PS3 in the world will feature Bluetooth networking (both models have the Bluetooth logo on the side). The cheaper version doesn't have WiFi out of the box, but WiFi will only be used for LAN networking (when not using an Ethernet cable), working with the PSP (when not using USB cables) and that's about it. This is not a Microsoft console!!!
Besides, how do we know those news are like that anyway? It's way too early for that just yet.

Both models will feature Bluetooth networking.
Controllers use Bluetooth networking.
Ergo, wired controllers are never required.
That's just gamesradar.com mistake.

WHAT?!!
gamesradar.com say
"A Sony representative on the show floor at E3 also emphasized that gamers won't be able to upgrade the memory of the 20GB version; if that's the PS3 incarnation you opt for, you're permanently stuck with a 20GB memory limit."
pretty reliable... ha?

While Izumi Kawanishi has said the following in an interview:
The difference in 20GB/60GB PS3 such as HDMI, WiFi, memory cards slot, and HDD won't matter in playing games. If you feel the HDD is small you can buy a bigger one.

PS3 has 20GB of memory? Lol. PS3 only has 500 MB of memory. PS3 has 20G of HD space though. And the harddrive can be swap for the 60G.

You won't believe how many retards I put up with who only read Gamesradar and then come upto me and argue how PS3 sucks and that it is a console for rich idiots. When I say "Fuck sake, I'm not going to arguw with you." They keep going "aaahhhh, yeah! PS3 SUCKS!"
I have a distinct hatred for Gamesradar also some magazine they are associated with. Gamesmaster being one of the main examples.
They are acting biased towards what-ever they like and hardly give any reasons behind it or they don't bother explaining what the competition has, they only brag what they like.
Fixed Media as always, is the problem here.

I have a press release from Sony Australia stating the pricing of both PS3 SKUs. Now since this is based on the European launch as well, it wouldn't make sense if Australasia got 2 SKUs and and Europe didn't.
Link to that press release can be found here:

I don't want to be rude, but Europe consists of more countries than UK. Here up north we are getting two SKUs, I had to change my pre-order to get the right one, the 60 GB version that is.
I really can't see why they would not have two SKUs in the UK, I wouldn't put to much trust in that article.

What has that got to do with the price of fish?
All I'm stating is that it would be highly strange if Australia and NZ got 2 SKUs and countries in Europe didn't, particularly the UK. The Australian and NZ Marketplace is considerably smaller, and considering we only got 1 PSP SKU, which was the value pack, and the premium Xbox360 SKU I don't see why we would get the choice between the 2 SKUs and larger markets don't get that choice.

Yeah, exactly. Let's consider the one SKU for UK as BS until we get more information.

The PS3 is a 100% mark up on the PS2 in North America from $300.
I would never pay £600 for a PS3 but thats pretty much what is happening in NA.
I wouldn't be suprised if we only got 1 SKU. £410 doesn't seem too expensive. But of course 2 SKU's would look quite attractive at only £320 people are much more likely to buy with the thought that its only £20 more than the PS2 was in mind.
Strictly speaking the UK isn't a part of europe. The £ is really strong which is why we still haven't switched to euro's. £10 a week pocket money will get me more than 10 euro's a week so I hope we never switch (think of the children).
The head honcho of SCEE said that the exact price of the PS3 in the UK will depend on the average exchange rates betweeen the Euro price and the Jap price.

£425. where do i sign along the dotted line! i can't afford a £1200 PC with inferior graphics so i guess i'll be stuck with saving £775. aint life a bummer. i was so looking foreward to sitting in the corner on my swivel chair too, now i'm forced to sit on my comfy settee. Sony you suck! i don't like the idea of not having to trawl through menus to optimise the game for my PC either. instead i'll have to stick my Blu-ray in and load it, another bummer! everyone on the net will have exactly the same net experience too. this just gets worse and worse.

The PS2 in the UK(£300/$560) was a 87% mark up on the PS2 in North America from $300.

Lol, say what? It most certainly is, using the Euro has no affect on whether or not you're part of Europe. Geographically it is surrounded by European countries and politically/economically it's part of the EU. It doesn't use the Euro because it considers its currency part of its glorious past (aka raping, murdering and pillaging other countries, and that's just the football fans ;-)).

I went into Gamestation today in Birmingham, UK and the preordered my 60GB PS3. The guy behind the counter said the same thing. Sony are not releasing the 20GB version on launch, and they are just taking preorders for the 60GB version. He also said it would cost £425, subject to change. He agreed that the XBOX 360 was a fiasco at launch, but expected the PS3 launch to go better. Even better news was the fact that, at Gamestation, you are preordering the console itself and not made to buy bundles as most other retailers make you do.

When the PS2 was released wan't it just on its own. My dad was complaining about how you get just the console and 1 controller.
I went to Game yesterday and the woman said she had had no details on PS3 pre-orders (not meaning being biased or sexist but I don't like talking to women in these types shops anyway, they so often give me bad information or just don't know). I would have gone to the other shop but it was out of my way.
(According to that woman I can't trade in an 18 game unless I'm 18! Of 6 games she would only take 1! I told her I was 15 and she wouldnt take thug2 remix cause it had an ESRB T which I just confirmed is 13+ which makes sense anyway, maybe she's just stupid - I quickly found myself at computer exchange where they didn't even ask my age)
Anyway gamestation seem to be the only shop doing pre orders, I dont know where my local game station is
