A recent article in the LA Times included analyst estimates of Nokia's global sales of their much derided handheld gaming 'device', the N-Gage. According to the estimates Nokia has succeeded in shifting only half of the target number of consoles to date, 200,000 versus 400,000 units. According to company representatives however this is all great and they mention that they are already working on a second version of the N-Gage and plan to have more than 80 games available for it next year.

What they can do to ever overcome the mountain of bad publicity and negative reports that have plagued their brave first foray into the gaming market is anyone's guess. A second version of the hardware which should hopefully address some of the more glaring, 'taco-esque' problems would go a long way, but it may be too late to save Nokia's tenuous grip on the market unless something very special indeed replaces the original handset.

N-gage = 200,000 since launch worldwide.

GBA = 1,724,000 in the last 2 months in just the U.S.

And somehow they are pleased with this? And are releaseing a new version of it? Someone slap Nokia and wake them up.

How the hell can they already be thinking about the next version ... they should concentrate on whats out right now if they plan to get any market share against Nintendo.

They need to be working on a new version...... and make it like $99. Just phone / games / basic stuff, then I may get it.

Now that is a handheld. Basic, simple, not too pricey and does one thing really good....play games.

Um, yeah. But this is Nokia remember? The company who is happy with 200,000 sales since launch of thier silver Taco Phone.

I imagine the customers won't be happy when the 200-300 dollar silver taco is oblsete in a year.

I don't think the customers are happy now being as their $200-300 dollar Silver Taco Phone is already obsolete.

Highest rated game = 77

Phone service available = 2 companies offer plans which means you may not even have coverage in your area.

^Point taken, but don't people check for service in the area before buyin a cell phone?

Maybe half did. Most people anticipated it would have full access to most companies and plans like many phones of that price range do.

It won't make the original N-Gage obsolete, this is just a redesign kind of like the GBASP was.

Nokia will probably just fix the design flaws (like the "sidetalking" and how you load games by taking out the battery and such).
