Sony: PS3 pad was not ‘last minute’
11:15, Jun 2nd by Neil Long
SCEE president and CEO David Reeves has hit back at criticism of PS3’s motion sensing controller, insisting that it has, in fact, been in development for over two years.
Despite claims to the contrary by senior figures at rival Nintendo, Reeves told MCV that Sony had been working on the controller long before details of the Wii controller were revealed at the Tokyo Games Show last year.

“We’ve had a positive reaction to the controller and obviously some people have asked if it's a last minute thing,” said Reeves. “It’s not - it’s been planned for around two and a half years."

"If you have a device that includes 50 or 55 patents, you can’t reveal it, as someone will try to file a patent to stop it. We have already had some positive feedback on it from publishers.”

Reeves went on to outline Sony’s hugely ambitious plans for its next-generation console and the industry at large.

"The name of the game is not market share, it’s how fast we can grow the industry – our ambition is to grow 15 per cent a year on hardware and software if we can,” added Reeves.

“We want to try and double digital entertainment in the next five to six years. Whether we have 40, 50, or 60 per cent market share is not that important.”

right there is why i like sony...

insted of trying to push everyone out of the market and hogging it all and turning it into a steaming dogpile. they just build the whole industry up to the point where even a fraction is profitable. and how do you build an industry do you ask?

createt something new and intresting something that will draw in new business. why try and steal you nebors hamberger when you can cookup 6 more of your own.

with MS you may see the best statce quoe ever... but thats all it will be

oh and props for nitty with the Wii thing but sony did come up with it first look at patendates.

I know many 20 to 30 year olds that are not into gaming at all. But the quality of next-gen games is making them curious. I think the power of the PS3 is going to lure in many new gamers.

Also, I think it will lure in disillusioned gamers such as myself back into the fold. Basically, when you can play a game that looks close to a movie gaming has reached a new level.

Cue the NintendoNow portion of E-mpire whining that Sony only included motion sensing because Nintendo did it first.

As for you MILR, I think I'm beginning to see what you mean. There are games where simplicity enhances the experience. Tetris, etc for example. But other times... you simply need the processing power for an immersive experience. "PlayStation2 was about games looking realistically. PlayStation3 will be about games behaving realistically." - Ken Kuturagi, '05.

anybody have links to the atent info on the tilty thing-a-ma-bob in the dualshoc...err dualtilt controller.

I had already figured Sony was R&D'ing controler techologies for a long while, and lets face it, its not like tilt sensors haven't been around, it's just they are now small enough, and robust enough, and cheap enough to implement into a gaming console.

Sony patent (http://forums.e-mpire.com/showthread.php?t=56491&page=2&highlight=tilt)

They patented it back in 1999

The thing is, you can't really claim anyone copied anyone, since it really could be that SCE wanted to utilize the tilt feature, but simply announced it at the last second.

And if we are to look at patents, then Microsoft and Logitech (I think it was logitech) was the first one out with a tilt-sensor game-pad. I believe it was released in 1998, though it never picked up (Gee... I wonder why... :ohno:)

Besides, what's the big deal with copying? As long as it evolves gaming as a whole, I see no harm.

Correct indeed. I think it has more to do with rectifying rumors, however.

That's why I wonder why some gamers are all up in arms about Sony "copying" the concept. Warhawk is that much better b/c of the new controller. And yeh .. to think that Sony simply tossed a team together and came out with the controller after seeing the Nintendo controller is just ignorant.

It will be great for flight games or games that have flight elements, I don't foresee myself going back to analog stick controls for flying, hopefully they'll find other implementation that will enhance controls.
