View Full Version : I'm sure by now everyone has seen the PS3 interface videos...

I thought the multi sceen web brower was pretty cool. I hope it extends past just web browsing though. Like being able to pause a game and pull up the browser to look somethin up online. Or even have a game playin in one window and having a video chat in the other. I really hope you're able to access the system interface without quiting out of a game you might be playing.
Did anyone else notice the in the video with the woman doing the demo that she said there would be up to 9 windows?

The only problem with that, I imagine anyway, is that system resources might be tied up running the game itself.
I know you can do that on a PC but I'm not sure if the PS3 will be designed in that same manner.

Well, if the PS3 really has those 96 megs of RAM tied up with the OS, it should be sufficient to run 9 windows in a webbrowser, don't you think? Flash games and streaming might get choppy though.

Will 96 MB be all that's allocated to the OS or non-gaming functions even when no game is running?

Tru, but I can't really see myself using all 9 at once. Three would be enough for me. Now that i think about it, it's rare that i have more than 2 IE windows up. I just really want to be able to do other things while still playing a game.

My FireFox is eating up 200 MB right now and that's with 5 tabs. If 96 MB is all that's offered fpr borwsing, that's going to suck especially as more and more of the Internet gets content heavy and eats up more RAM.

I don't see how this is a PS3-only issue. Other consoles will have to deal with that too.

I'm not extremely tech savy on this subject, but wouldn't it also possible that the PS3 browser won't be as ram heavy as firefox?
Viper
06-06-2006, 06:47 AM
Well if the PS3 is supposed to be capable of what my PC can do, as many claim (yet to be determined), then I should be able to run FF on a PS3 of which I would if that were possible.
I get the feeling it's not just limited to that 96 MB though.

What other consoles have web browsers with multi window displays? There's currently no browser for the 360, I haven't heard anything about the Wii having one.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. Even still, if i'm wondering how somethin in the PS3 will work, why wouldn't i post it in the PS3 section?

PSP has a web browser with multi-displays. In the sense that you use tabs.

Yes, but since the PSP is already out there's no need to wonder how it'll work.

I doubt somehow that ps3's browser will be as complex as firefox's... especially if it's at all similar to psp's.

I'm thinking that as you run a game, you can allocate that 96MB of RAM to basic functions like messaging or webcam or music, but if you want to do something else you pause the game where a save state is created on the HDD while having a placeholder image on the screen, thus freeing most if not all the remaining RAM to be used for other purposes or having 9 windows running.
Of course you are only limited to 512MB of RAM, but that should be sufficient to run that 200MB firefox situation Viper has.
On a side note, what kind of windows do you have running on ff to get 200MB out of it? I've run close to 10 windows on it with only 40MB being taken up. Are you running Google Earth while playing 3 other simultaneous flash videos and having the forum up?

I'll believe that 96MB and 2 SPE's (1 reserved) (1 waitng at a moments notice for OS Operations) BS when I see something official

Yeah... Can anyone tell me where I can find the PS3 interface video? I am way behind.
Also would you be able to watch videos on the PS3 using the web browser or using Windows media or Quicktime? If not can you downlowd .mpeg .mov and other files and watch them instead of bieng limited to only mpeg 4?

If the PS3 can pull off a fully functional browser it would be a huge feat...
Typically TV based internet browers have not done well, but if the PS3 browser offers Active X and Flash support it could be a good alternative to PC browsing. The next questions is the UI, I know the PSP interface for typing URLs was somewhat horrid... I already have a Bluetooth keyboard, but I'm not sure if the masses would purchase a keyboard for better browsing.
Also, If Sony allows URL browsing what about parental controls?
I'm sure some parents will be concerned if little Billy is visiting porn sites on a regular basis...
I do like the idea of playing Socom 4 and being able to open a separate window to set up my clan wars on gamebattles.com...Nice ;-)

@Nameless: Well there are parental controls on the PS3, as shown in the interface vid, though I hate parents who limit thier kids like that. If Billy wants to watch porn, it's his own choice, and he'll have plenty of ways to do it. Besides, I don't think he'd be doing it on a TV... In the middle of the living room... But that's not what we're discuusing here, and for a totally different thread!
PS3 will support all Keyboards and mouses(No, not mice, mouses). As an added bonus, you'll be able to hook up ANY bluetooth compatible keyboard to your PS3. There might be exceptions, of course.
One question though, why would PS3 need DirectX for web browsing?

Think he might mean ActiveX, which is over rated anyway.
What you'd want is Flash and Java support.
As far as Firefox goes, PS3 runs Linux, Firefox runs on Linux, so if Sony want to supply it at a later date, they can.
I see this for being a good, light browser for games though. You hit an option on your game, you go to a page with the latest downloads and news in Wipeout 4 for PS3 or whatever. I don't see people sitting down with Bluetooth keyboards and mice doing their banking on it that much.

Also, now that we know both Linux and the PS3 OS will be stored in flash, we don't have to worry about virusses!! That means that Sony might even allow us to install whatever we want to install in Linux! Ah, the freedom of choice!!!

You'll probably need to download a codec pack. I'd recommend this one (www.cccp-project.net).

Hehe anyways, I'm not really expecting to be able to switch between a browser & a game, but it would definitely be nice! I can understand the RAM constraints though, and I don't want this to turn into a PC where we have to balance out our RAM or something just to make a game run decently -- that's the developer's job!

I think you are a little late. At E3'05, it was announed that consumers will be able to simultaneously perform other tasks while gaming. Later after that, this was released, but was taken as an experiment not to ever see the light of day by a few:

Until now, it seems this and the interface seen at E3 hold a closer relationship than expected.

I'm running Vista beta 2, so yes:angel: . I don't know how it looks in XP, but the Vista version is beautiful. I rwally love the simplified interface, and the fact that the player is tranparent, like toned ang blurred glass. Which is the same for every single normal window actually.
