June 6, 2006 - While the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children DVD was met with mixed reviews, most gave props to the movie's intense battle sequences. From Tifa's church encounter to Cloud facing off against Sephiroth, the footage at times looked like the ultimate video game cut-scene. The only thing missing was a controller.
With Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix is hoping to bring that experience into the player's hands. In an interview published at Japan's Dengeki Online game site, FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama stated, "FFXIII attempts to see how far it's possible to make FFVII Advent Children's battles into a game. FFVII Advent Children is a video production, and it showed us battles that have not been achievable in FF so far. With FFXIII, we're focusing on how far we can realize the video."

I do believe this is what some people would consider "next-gen"? Yes, I realize there is an FFXIII thread on the games forum. However, this has much broader implications for the RPG genre as a whole as well as gameplay as a whole in all genres.
Only with massive processing power will you see developers become as ambitious as this. The PS3 will not just be "more of the same". The gauntlet has officially been thrown down
