iPods are more "in" than beer across American college campuses, according to the Student Monitor.

Seventy-three percent of the 1,200 students surveyed by the college market researcher rated iPods as an "in" item or activity. Drinking beer and Facebook.com, the social networking site, shared a close second place, each rated as "in" by 71 percent of college students. "Drinking other alcohol" was considered "in" among 67 percent.

Other determined "in" items among college students this year are text messaging (66 percent), downloading music (66 percent), and coffee (60 percent). MySpace.com rated 58 percent.

Dispelling the technology gender myth, more women than men rated blogging, digital cameras, text messaging, downloading music, downloading ring tones, sharing photos online, notebook computers and iPods as being "in."

Males did lead overall in gaming. PlayStation was the most "in" gaming device among men at 38 percent, and Xbox 360 at 29 percent. Nintendo's newly released Wii was not included in the study.

Other than Ipod and Booze, Playstation brand is leading over 360. If this survey is true, I doubt the PS3 pricing would have any effect. And Sony has its work cut out. It would be in Sony's best interest to align with Apple Ipod. Aligning with Apple would be big blow to MS but would that happen?

Can anyone guess why this 'study' pisses me off a little?

The results given aren't really that surprisng though except for Myspace ranking below facebook (granted I hate both).

When was the survey done; it does not say. It only says the date of when the article was published. I am wondering this because if it was before the price was announced, then people voted without knowing the price of the console.

For the last time surveys mean nothing...
I could care less about the spending habits of a few people.

The ipod may be the most 'in' product at the moment but I would never buy one as there are better and cheaper MP3 players than an Ipod.

I've never even heard of facebook (must be an American thing?)

I don't think so. I never heard of that in my life. :) I guess it is a new thing in America that people do not care about.

It's pretty obvious that 70% of those college students are nuts and don't know what to do with their excess cash. I don't drink alcohol, but I would definitely choose to intoxicate myself than spend almost $300 (w/ tax) on an Ipod with only 2GB of space. I could pay half-price for a mp3 player with similar specifications.

SD Memory 2GB - $59.99CDN
TDK MOJO 256MB MP3 PLAYER w/FM &REC - $59.99CDN.

Actually, it's less th an half price with tax included. Add $60 if you want 4GB of space; even then it's less than $300. :)

I never heard of facebook as well. visited the site. I still don't get it. what is it exactly?

and iPod? way too expensive and buggy for my taste. the Nano looks sleek, yet still. last I checked, they sold 50 million iPods to date!

and getting drunk is that high in the list? that isn't very incouraging to see so many 'college' level people like that- or at least admits it.

lololol....
facebook is this peer to peer site for college students. It's similar to myspace but there aren't ads all over the place and only college students, high school students and grad students are on it.

In short it's another 'meet a girlfriend' channel. results may vary.
It's also a quick way to keep tabs on everyone you know and their goings-ons.

The point is i-pod's sell in their millions even though they are hugely overpriced because they are "in" and that is the biggest selling point to the masses. I agree with Ken, if apple released the PS3 as an extension of the i-pod brand, they'd sell millions at $1000-$2000, because of the brand name alone.
If PS3 can be as "in" as an i-pod, the future would be very bright indeed for SONY.

Yah, iPods are fashion accessories, designer label mp3 players. A iRiver will give you much more bang for your buck, but Apple take that money and pay for...

a - More advertising with dudes with big hair dancing in silhouette.

b - Developing the real cool stuff they make, which is Mac OS X. Best OS in the world mate.

Do not fear, iPod will play your ripped off MP3s just fine. :)
