Dude, would you actually paste the article isntead of just posting a link each time?
Masahiro Sakurai has updated the Japanese website for Super Smash Bros. Brawl yet again. Here is what we've learned from the updates since we last left off:
# He said "Asking only for popular characters to appear in Smash... doesn't get me excited", which means we should be seeing more niche characters as well. Go go Balloon Fighter! I love that game. If you have Animal Crossing for the GCN, get it and play it (it's an NES game).
# There might be Easter eggs that utilize the WiiMote. Kind of like how if you press on the D-Pad with the correct inputs using Fox or Falco on Corneria, Slippy and Pepper appear.
# Snake will be using explosives like grenades and rocket launchers. His pistol and survival knife will not be used. Sakurai says that in Japan, there isn't much difference between a survival knife and sword, but it differs in other countries. Basically, they want an E10 rating from the ESRB, not T.
# If what we understand is right, MetaKnight will have a rock version of the Kirby Victory Theme! Kirby has always had the most kickass themes...
# The voice actor for Pit is the one who did the voice for Conan in the anime Detective Conan

Some more info was just posted:
QJ has been keeping you all abreast of Super Smash Bros Brawl developments for quite some time now, but it looks like this might just be one of the final updates for a while. Masahiro Sakurai responded to the wife of the author of the very first e-mail he responded to regarding Brawl. In it, he explains that the polls are now closed and that he's sorry for all the ideas people wanted that won't be implemented. He ended by saying "We will create this game with balance in mind." However, before that, he did some updates I wasn't able to post up right away.
Although a Snake version of Kirby was obvious, Sakurai confirms it with this line "I guess I have no choice but to make a Snake copy, too. Should it be a bandana? Or perhaps a beard?" Check out this awesome drawing (right) I found. Props to the artist!
Link will not have a catchphrase (like "Mission Complete" and "Come On!" for Fox in SSBM). He thinks a Link that talks would be odd.
Sakurai responded with the following when asked about secret characters,
"Well... that is a tough question. As long as the internet exists, all secrets will be revealed quickly. Sometimes even before the game comes out, even. Secret characters are one of the fun parts of Smash. Although you don't want to find out until the very end, I guess [literally: 'after all,' so there is no doubt in this statement] I'll reveal them. Again, just like "Smash fist" [literally: 'Sumabura ken,' the name of the Japanese SSBM site?] I can't just hold these characters back. "
Although no words on exactly what the original cast will be was said, he did say that it would be fitting for Snake to be a hidden character because he was a guest. So don't expect Snake to be on the starting roster.
SamuraiPanda, the one who's been translating all the wonderful information for all of us also gave an update on the Japanese site's front page:
"The frontpage now elaborates slightly on the comment he had before. He does confirm that someday in 2007, they will release alot more info, but for now they are going to go quiet. However, if there is anything important to tell us before then, they may slip in an update."
Sayonara, sweet Smash info.

Someone please explain to me how a knife will get you a teen rating, while a rocket launcher gets you E10?!?

Perhaps it happens to do with how personal a blade is and how impersonal an explosion is. When people kill other people, it generally seems easier for one person to shoot another than it is to stab or slash them with a blade, perhaps due in no small part to the impersonal nature of shooting someone. Further, we deal with blades (in various forms) in day-to-day life and being cut is a normal experience we can all relate to, but we don't always get blown up or have a personal experience with explosions, which might make them harder to associate with and thusly fall more into the category of theatrical special effects and video game magic than violence we can more personally relate to.
Hmm. Not sure that I quite got my point across, here....

Even Fox sounded very odd with his catch phrases because of the lack of localization. Do you think they'll bother revoicing Fox and Falco (and for that matter, any Fire Emblem characters) this time? I think that the popularity in the US warrants the extra effort.

A knife is a weapon to assassinate some one for snake, slash their throat and what not a bomb will just blast them skyward so the the T makes sense for a weapon ment to kill some one in that way.

This no gun/knife business with Snake is horseblast. Young Link used the Kokiri sword, and that thing was about as big as a butter knife. No bullet-firing guns I kinda get, but Snake has been using tranq dart guns from Sons of Liberty, to Twin Snakes, and even in Snake Eater. Hell, give him that gay ass monkey-shaker from Snake vs. Monkey.

Personally, I liked the lack of Localization for the voices. It was one of the quirks of SSB:M that I really liked.
And I kinda agree on them not using the Survival Knife for Snake. Has anyone seen that page of VGCats?

Yeah, i can see why they ditched the knife...

A sword can do the same thing. Should they take the Master Sword away from Link cause it could decapitate someone? No, that's horse shit.

Otacon i take it you are a MGS fan
So let me say this
Snake has a survival knife
Its used to silently kill, not the same way Link's sword is used. It would be out of place in Brawl, which is a Smash Bros game, not a Tenchu multiplayer game
And as far as tranqs go, i would much rather use a rocket launcher
Tranqs the used in the same way Fox or even Falco's pistols' were used would mess up the gameplay so hard. I dont even have to explain that one, just imagine how broken it would be if you could send people to sleep like that.
Just to add to the Knife thing, Big Boss had a knife
Not Solid Snake - who is the character in Smash Bros

Who cares?
What are you afraid he's moves will be something like this...
B - Rocket Launcher
> B - ???
^ B - ???
v B - ???
Or something like this?
B - Rocket Launcher
> B - Fairy Wand
^ B - Dance Jump
v B - Happy Happy Smile
He'll have appropriate moves from the MGS games. Who the fuck are you to tell the guy who headed design on Smash Bros Melee how to design the game?

Snake kills. You're right, I am a MGS fan, so I'm was very happy to hear that Snake will be making an appearance. But if they didn't want a character who is known for how he defeats his enemies and the tools he uses to do so, they should've stuck another cartoony fruit in instead. I'm sure Billy Hatcher or Tak would've jumped at the chance.

dont worry, dont be a hater...wait till the game comes out and if they fuck snake up then bitch and whine.
they most likely wont but still, you're acting like a little kid with the whole "this is what i want" attitude
game designing takes a while, its a careful process, there are LOTS of things to take into consideration...im not going to explain cus you seem to narrow minded to understand (and i dont even know it all)
also, dont get it twisted, im not dissing you or anything - i dont even know you - but you are obviously overlooking many things
dont start an argument over this stuff...snake has a weapon or w.e. i dun care
i just want the new Brawl to be awesome. Thats it.

First off, yes, I did read your whole post, and I'm not bitching and whining. I'm stating a legitimate gripe. I'm not saying "this is what I want". I'm saying "this is how it's supposed to be". What do you mean by "game designing takes awhile"? I know it takes a long time to put a game together, but it obviously can't take that long for them to say "Hm... what is Link's primary weapon in the Zelda games? Ah yes, a sword!". All I'm saying is Snake's primary weapon in the MGS games is always a gun. I don't even give a shit about the knife, even though you're wrong, and Snake does use a knife (in MGS4). I wouldn't even care if they gave him a gun that didn't fire bullets. It's clear that the only reason they don't want to give him a gun is because they're going for the EC rating(as usual) and it would be "too violent". Fox, Falco, and Samus have their guns, and then there's the Superscope, and the ray gun. Just give him a damn real-looking gun(Fox's gun from Melee already looked 'real 'enough), but make it fire like the rest of the blasters.
Whatever though, you know? They're gonna do what they want, whether it's right or wrong.
Matt008
06-12-2006, 03:22 AM
I dunno, I mean, there are ray guns and Fox/Falco's laser pistol but those are just fantasy weapons. Snake's gun (usually a SOCOM, right?) would shoot faster than Fox's laser, and it would just look weird if they tried to slow down the bullet or make it more noticable. It's really just easier to take the gun out and have him use Claymores or the rocket launcher (NIKITA right? Or am I thinking of another weapon?).
What I mainly want to know his what his mega super pwn move will be, I can't really think of anything.
venomv
06-12-2006, 03:28 AM
He used a NITIKA in the MGS1, if I remember right it was the one you controled after you shot it.
Otacon305
06-12-2006, 05:09 AM
He used both the Nikita and Stinger in MGS. His pistol in MGS was a SOCOM, and a USP in MGS2. He only used Claymore Mines in MGS, and the M9 tranquilizer gun in MGS2. He also used a FAMAS assault rifle and PSG1 Sniper rifle in MGS, as well as an M4 Carbine with grenade launcher in MGS2.
Phoenix
06-12-2006, 05:56 AM
The Nakita was the controllable one, the Stinger was the anti-aircraft one. But I digress...
They can't make Snake's gun his main weapon because it's a FIGHTING game. And if they give it to him as an alternate weapon, they have to either make an instantly traveling projectile (read: cheap) or a retarded looking gunshot. So that's out. The knife is generally less family friendly. Link's sword is used to fight, while Snake's knife is used to kill, that's the difference. Sure, most of the things Link fights ends up getting killed, but that's not the general impression of the sword on gamers, and that's what the ESRB cares about. Either way, besides Sneak-Up-Behind-Them-And-Slit-Their-Throat (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=197), what kind of attacks could Snake use with a knife?
Cofey
06-12-2006, 06:04 AM
This is just my own opinion, but I don't really think a gun would fit into a Smash Bros. game. I mean, if he did have one, he'd be shooting his enemies, and they'd just kind of brush it off and keep fighting you know? Just the whole idea of having a character with a real gun doesn't seem to fit to me.

I could see Master Cheif (why couldn't thye have given him a name?) fitting in just as well as Snake.
Snake does close combat well, even though he has never had many moves to choose from, so I think they should focus on that and give him grenade and rocket launchers if they insist. I understand your guy's points, but I still don't like that descision, they should at least give him a tranq gun....just with a slow shot so it is dodgeable, the game isn't going for hyper-realism if you havn't noticed.

the plasma grenade would be the awesomest weapon ever. If it got stuck on you, you would have like 5 seconds to run to the closest opponent to the blast would fuck em up also. Also what could work... If you were on shitty health (like 250+%) you could throw it downwards and it would get stuck on you, then you could waltz in on some noob who doesnt know its stuck on you and sacrifice yourself.
