if you are a linux newbie, maybe you should try knoppix, ubuntu or kubuntu or pclinuxos.

XGL isn't a linux distro. XGL + Compiz allows you to do amazing things with your Linux desktop (as long as you have an NVidia or ATi graphics card). I'm running it right now on Kubuntu. It took a little bit of work to get it working, but it's pretty damn cool.

Novell bought Suse, which is a linux I highly recommend. (tis one of my fav's)
But like said above, the others are good choices as well.

You should be able to run teh novell desktop on any linux though.....

[EDIT] SO after about a week or two of compile error after compile error, I gave up on RHEL.
Installed Suse 10.1 on a spare dirve and I have to say, this XGL it THE SHIT!
Took me abotua day to figure out all the quirks(As the app is still pre-release) but I got it installed and running.

After showing several people I am the talk of the day, in fact our users want us to roll this out in to our next "image release."
We are discussing it, but seeing as how we use teh RHEL, it will take some effort.

Anywho, I would recommend this to anyone who uses linux, of course....waiting for an official release might be mor erecommended. SLED(suse linux enterprise desktop) will be the first OS to offer XGL as standard, but it should be pakcaged/bundled for most major flavors not long after.

There is nothing I can say that isn't already demonstrated in the videos, except that you have to try it for youselves.

CHEERS!
