View Full Version : annoying things in games

it happens to all of us. there is a theme you hate in general, or something specific in a game. that thing that annoys you and make you say "did someone seriously think this would come out as 'cool' or good?!" it sometimes buts a damper in the experience. what such things you came along during gaming?

as for me; I hated Dante's 'little excited girl on a swing' screaming. it really went against his supposed image of being 'the coolist character in gaming'.

another thing I hate is the over the top hype sources report on games- even the ones that clearly look to make snails want to commit suicide. I don't blame the poor PR people pushing their product, but I do blame the media that swallows it all up and regurgitate it on us. game media should know when to play along the hype or clearly call it out.

I also hate teh 'ganster' themes that are aimed at making you feel 'cool' and 'hip'. what are we kids?

Momma's Boy: "hey, this games make me play as one of those bad guys on the streets. man I am so grown up!"
His Mommma: "hurry up pumkin, you'll be late for the tee party"

oh, just shoot me already...

Re-spawning enemies! "Woah shit, i nearly died but at least all the enemies are gone! *turn around and see a bunch of enemies* "fuck sake but i've killed all of you!! AND NOW I AM DEAD!!!" Thank god most games don't have this now.

Trying to find something in an 'open' area! My navigation skills suck! When my brother is watching he is like "YOU JUST BEEN THERE FOUR SECONDS AGO! STOP LOOKING AT THE SAME PLACE!" And I am thinking "stupid developers, this isnt interesting, it's annoying. why would i want to go around a map trying to find something!"

Slow realoding animation! For crying out loud, in a war game, the guy is like "duu duu..i'll just empy this clip..oh there is dust on my gun! i'll just get rid of that..now i'll just find the new clip....have to put it in carefully..." I know reloding needs to be done carefully but in some games it's just outrageoulsy slow and tedious and the way the guy moves slowly takes away from the illusion of war.

Slow moving main characters! Most noticeably that always comes to mind is the speed of the character in 'coldwinter' It's like you are playing as a 60 year old man. It's really annoying.

There are loads more but they are usually because the devs suck, not because they put it in as a 'good idea'.

Playing the one lap wonder modes in GT4. You actually have to sit on the start line for an X amount of time, which is very, very stupid.

i finally started playing silent hill 2 the other day, got to the lakeview hotel today and just got cornered and raped by something that looked like a table. i tried to move out of the way to get a clear shot... but the thing just kept on raping me... until i died.

I'd have to say my annoyances for games are having no checkpoints! A few games that are prone for this is Motal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, God of War, and Killzone, and Tomb Raider: Legend just to name a few. I hate having unbalanced checkpoints!

The second annoyance is spawning enemies and levels being waaaaay toooo looonggg!!!

One factor that doesn't bother me is slowdown like in Shadow of the Colossus or Killzone. I seem to hardly notice it. Also ugly graphics don't seem to bother me either or poor controls or lame voice acting (to an extent).

I also HATE games that have no storyline what-so-ever. Also a lot of other things but those are my main gripes. Sometimes it's also with the hardware itself *cough Xbox 360 cough*

I don’t remember what GoW did, but in TB:Legend there are checkpoints as well as you being able to save anywhere, anytime.

but yeah, I feel you, it becomes a chore when you replay an entire level in Ace Combat just because you died at the very last second of finishing the level. now you have to replay 15 minutes doing exactly what you just did. and if you are an AC nut like me, you'll replay it time and time again to get an Ace rank in every single level on all difficulties.
they could at least made check points between major points in the level.

another thing that annoys me is cut scenes that you can't skip. come on, I love FMVs as much as the next guy, but I tend to get tired after watching one for 20 times. besides, there are far better looking pre-rendered cut scenes that still allow you to skip. and I am stuck with a sorry excuse for ugly that I cannot skip...

I also hate the idea that I can't save after finishing some games. I need to save my 'completed file' so I can view my final score and what not. how stupid is it that at the end of long games like FF and KH you can't simply save the final score of your complete journey? ouch.

and what about the little things called bonuses as a completion gift? let me replay a game with infinite ammo/health/whatever. let me watch any cut scene I liked. through in a couple of concept sketches, and maybe a quick video clip of devs' monitor screens showing the game being made, some voice acting being recorded, etc. it doesn't really take much. just give a guy a camera and let him walk around places that are okay to shoot.

finally, and this is a kicker, I should be told by the game when I finish it that there are more endings to unlock. there are some games I finished that I still don't know they had at least another ending. it would also help a lot by given hints as to how not to get the same ending. tell me what I did/didn't do. give me hints. Onimusha 2 is a great example since they showed you a path-line where you went through. the next time you play, you stop at the interjection and chose the other path or choice.

The main problem I tend to hate is graphical glitches. Namely, disappearing platforms. These aren't too common, but whenever they occur, they become insufferable, especially, IN A PLATFORMER.

I hate anime-like reactions.

Some things off the top of my head:

1) Lousy, annoying cameras. I hate getting my ass handed to me because the camera was too retarded to figure out how to show what needed to be shown. I hate not being able to see what I want/need to see because the camera doesn't want to do what it should be doing.

2) Lousy play control. If your character has banana heels, if it moves like a clunky, overweight robot in serious need of some joint lubrication, if you know what you want to do but can't do it because the character controls too badly, it's difficult for me to endure it for long.

3) The game spending an eternity rubbing it in that you suck. So, you've died or you've lost the race and you want to hurry up and go at it again, but the game wants to spend a solid minute displaying your corpse or the losing vehicle and proudly displaying "wasted" or "you lose", and then you have to sit through another solid minute or two of loading time. You want to try again right now, but first you have to endure a few minutes of having your failure rubbed in your face.

I could go into detail like you guys, but I can sum it up in one word. Tingle.

^Hahaha. Whats all the fuss over Tingle? He aint that bad.

I really hate it in game when you get stuck at a point and you just dont know what to do, and then you go to gamefaqs and youre like 'well that was fucking stupid and obvious, but they couldve tried harder to make you know wtf to do'.

When that happens it usually makes me stop playing the game entirely. (Except for Wind Waker and Timesplitters 3).

There are heaps more but I cbf. Its usually just lots of annoying small things rather than one big thing.

I agree with that. Some games are really bad about that. In Conkers BFD sometimes I would wonder around forever trying to find out what to do next.

>Graphical pop-up
>Short draw distances
>Cell-shading
>Bad collision detection (trying to shoot a rocket around a corner or when crouched behind something and having it blow up in your face)
>Not being able to move while blocking (Soul Calibur)
>Glitches manipulated by freaks in multiplayer that make just regular play impossible (SSBM wavedashing, etc)
>Lack of checkpoints (Devil May Cry)
>Not being able to perform simple, logical actions because of the game's limitations (examples: Resident Evil - Oh, I'm out of space to carry items? How about putting something in a fucking pocket? Or getting a bag and carrying it around? Or how about just holding it, and putting it down for a sec if I need to? So I stabbed a zombie in the head with a dagger? Well how about reaching down and pulling that bitch back out? It's called recycling. And then there's shit in other games, like fuck there's a 2 foot tall wall in front of me but meh, I'm not gonna just FUCKING HOP OVER IT. Hm, shitty old door locked? How about a fucking running boot to that shit? In fact, this reminds me of two more things I hate...)
>Not being able to jump/climb shit
>Not being able to open shitty doors without keys (Let me tell you: Wooden door + rocket launcher/shotgun/grenade = OPEN)
> Fog (see Turok)
>Inability to use items that can clearly be used as weapons, as weapons (Oh, I picked up a big silver sword key? Well how about before I put it in the wall, I stab these zombies coming at me in the head with it? Just for kicks.)

I'll think of some more later.

ah, don't remind me. that was the biggest turn off for me in DMC3.

another thing I hate is not being able to control the camera.

I don't want to be on the third level to hear "to jump, press this button", and then at the end I'm fighting a boss battle that's like 50 times harder than any other in the game. The perfect curve - Super Mario Bros.

to point out, some of you are challenging specific gameplay elements and game limitation. the problem is, it is very hard to make them convincing. that is why we often get invicible walls or can't brake a simple wooden door with a huge powerful robot or monster.

I hate tutorials at the beginning of games that you can't skip.
