The yields for Blu-ray laser diodes are still low due to a high technical barrier, with only Sony and Nichia being the only suppliers, stated the paper. In addition, Sony is setting aside a major proportion of its laser diode capacity for its upcoming PS3, which may also affect the availability of its Blu-ray laser diodes, the paper said.
Sounds like the yields are pretty poor still . The good news is that sony is setting aside enough for the ps3 shipments. The bad news is even with stock piling your going to run out of them at some point .
I wonder how this will affect thier 1m a month goals for after march

seeing that standalone players are making it to the shelfs and nearly everymajor PC maker is offering it in there top end systems its clear that there is plenty of the diodes to go around and still produce all the PS3s they need.

call and ask alienware
or a tweeters i was in sunday to buy my HDMI cable for my PS3. when i asked about the Blu-ray players they told me
"the 20 units that they where alocated to the store have sold out... if you would like i can put you on the list." to which i replyed "no thanks im going to wait for PS3. i was only asking"
if blu-ray is going to be such a failure why is MS supporting it now in the PC division? your lord and master see the forest for the trees what's your problem?

Lol, we have known the diodes are hard to make, the Blu-Ray drive in PS3 isn't expensive for nothing..........

Sheesh people, you could have gotten this damn thing over with a lot sooner if you'd just asked him to give his post-playing synopsis of Gears of War instead of goading on all this crap over 2 pages. What's the point of encouraging the fellow?
Anyway, did anybody happen to actually *read* the darn article? You'll notice that it pretty well says Sony themselves aren't experiencing a shortage -- they're reserving the majority of their supply of the diodes for PS3 launch, and not exporting very many units. It's the other drive manufacturers who are seeing the shortage. And as for Nichia, they're not exactly a massive volume producer in the first place. All it means is that you won't see that many PC drives or standalone players before PS3 comes out.

This thread is a disgrace; and not because the original post wasn't a completely valid post either. If Digitimes is going to be skewered as being 'propoganda,' what's next?
Let me say that I haven't been as active a mod lately as I have been in the past... and as I should be. I would like to think if I was, maybe some of this stuff wouldn't get out of control in the first place. I've recently changed jobs though, and my schedule is *packed* right now. Not only that, but my office network prevents me from visiting the PSINext forums due to the 'babes' sections. So, I'm going to have to adjust to the new tempo.
But seriously... when you think about the twists and turns this thread took, and how far off topic it got, it boggles the mind.
Anyway thanks to Stan for putting a stop to the madness.
