View Full Version : Powermac G5 problem
My Dad is having a problem with his Powermac G5, as it won't turn on at all. When I take the plug out from the back I can hear a "click" and when I plug it back in I can hear the same "click". When the plug is in the white light at the front it on, which it shouldn't be as the whole system would be on.
Any ideas of what it is? The PSU or something?
I'm very grateful for your help, thanks!

Okay try this.
Turn the notebook on with the battery taken out. If it still doesnt turn on, you've eliminated the battery out of the equation.
Now as far as I can see it there are 3 main possibilities after this:
1) Power supply not working, check LED on PSU if it has one (if it functions probably OK, if not probably faulty, but the LED could just have died), if you have a multimeter (and more importantly know how to use it ;)) check the voltage of the PSU is sufficient to power the notebook, if is sufficient you've eliminated power supply
2)Motherboard is screwed, there are many problem areas on here too many to name them all but I'll go over the obvious, secondary power supply unit (most likely if computer won't turn on at all, but has standby light), other parts, video board, and connectors to the LCD panel.
3) RAM. If this is stuffed and more likely to die than a CPU, then it won't turn on. If you have any replacement Notebook guessing DDR PC2700 SODIMM RAM lying around you could Test, I'm a little unsure what a Mac Notebook uses.
Anyway good luck with it all. Let me know how you go!

I guess the first problem with that span is it isn't a notebook. But the rest should work. I am wondering since it's happened to me(my G5), if it isn't getting enough amps where it is currently plugged into. Other than that I can't look to much more into it until I get back from work tonight.

I'm very grateful for your help, thanks!Which Power Mac G5 is it? It sounds like your power supply has died. The Quad has had a rash of these lately. That and coolant leaks in older machines over 2.0 GHz.
Still, has the Power Mac always worked on that outlet? Try another one.
I fixed it. The first thing that I tried was resetting the Powermac's PMU by pressing in a small button on the Motherboard. As that didn't work, I took the battery out which was implemented on the Motherboard for about 10 minutes, put it back in and the Powermac booted as normal!

LMAO oh boy is my face red, I thought he was talking about a Mac Notebook.
:-[
That CMOS battery stores the time and the date and other such stuff, it shouldn't really effect your computer powering on, there might be something else afoot.
I got my information from here,
Have you tried pressing the PMU reset button?
This is located close to the center of the RAM slots, at the bottom of the logic board. You'll have to slide out the inlet fan assembly to see it.
Press and release that button. Do not press a second time, unless this doesn't help.
You can also remove the battery (this is in a holder at the top center of the logic board) Leave this out and the power cord disconnected for 10 minutes or so. Put the battery back in. reconnect the power cord. Wait 10 seconds. Press the PMU reset button, Wait 10 more seconds. Make sure the fans are back in place, and the clear cover is secure. Press the power button.
If it works, you'll need to reset the time and date.
If it doesn't work - take to an Apple auth service.

Seems to have worked anyway, Powermac is working as normal.
