View Full Version : Microsoft will release iPod rival this year
Microsoft on Friday confirmed it will ship competitive offerings to Apple’s tremendously successful iPod and iTunes digital music products sometime this year.
In an e-mailed statement, the company said that under a new brand, called “Zune,” it will deliver “a family of hardware and software products” that will “bring together technology and community to allow consumers to explore and discover music together.”
Microsoft did not give specific information on exactly how the new products will work together, but said it plans to help build a community for connecting customers to new music and other entertainment in addition to offering new hardware and software.
Speculation has been brewing for some time that Microsoft was planning an iPod “killer,” but the company had remained mum on the subject until Friday.

That's what I'm thinking as well Dude, unless they have something very good/clever up their sleeves I can't see this doing very well.

nah, it will just be a portable multi-media device that hooks up toa media-center PC, and I honestly can't think of anythign they could potentially do, that hasn't already been done/or thought of with other portable devices..
Yeah, I know what you mean. I think that Apple have too strong a foothold on the market now, and as we all know, Apple should have a new iPod itself on the way.
Been wanting to get an MP3 player lately, but I'd need to get a 40GB or 60GB one. Is the iPod gonna be the best one to get?

iPod will be the most expensive one, but has the best market penetration.
there are jsut as good, if not better players for cheaper, when you purchase an iPod, its kind of like buying a Lexus(your buying the name, not the car)

Well in all honesty Matt, I'm a bit of an Apple freak so I'd say go with the 60GB iPod (Which I intend to get next month). But as I'm a student, I get it a little bit cheaper.
I can get it for £274.95 compared to £299. I've got a Nano at the moment and I love it because of it's overall simplicity and integration with iTunes.
I was looking at the 60GB ones on eBay a minute ago. This one seemed a bit too good to be true:

Edit: For some reason, they're only shipping them to Ireland. Odd?

I want an iPod video, but theyre too expensive. Its not that I dont have the money, its just that I dont think forking out 600 bucks (au) for a 60gb video iPod is justified.
:(
Ah, I know how you feel. I don't know, I personally feel that paying £274 for a 60GB iPod isn't too bad. Having said that, I'm worried that I will purchase an iPod only for Apple to release a new one straight after!
Take a look at the link I posted above, see what you think.
All in all, that's about £112 in total? Hummm... Me thinks that is indeed too good to be true. It's coming from China for a start, so you'll be hit with tax and some other charge (Can't remember what that charge is, I remember having to pay tax as well as something else for my PSP).
Thought there would be something funny about it. Annoying really, because I don't have £300 or whatever to buy one.
Well, from what I understand if you were to risk getting it from China you'd be getting it substantially cheaper. I think that Stan was once saying to me that buying some things from China in general can be a bit risky, but this was in reference to 1 and 2 GB memory sticks for the PSP (Which were going for £20 and £40, that's a hell of a saving).
Maybe worth doing a bit of research first. Don't want to be lumped with some horrible import tax.

@Fats, Dude, Matt-Fellas I have my girlfriend's 30GB Ipod Nano over here but I can't get frickin videos on the damn thing. Besides that, there is a tone of music that's acutally on the system's HDD-but it doesn't show up on the actual playlist??! I guess they must've sinked or copied all the files to the wrong section or whateva. But I tried to copy videos from my computer to the Ipod and there isn't even a video "Icon" for me to copy to? I'm currently using windows media player for all this so is there another program I have to use like PSPvideo9 or something? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

can't really fail any harder than the mp3 walkman now can it ?
Anyway , with no new announced ipod and this coming out for the holiday , I'm interested in updating my 3rd gen 20 gig ipod with one of these . The live anywhere makes me happy

Right now , the ipod click wheel is the best thing on the market for navigating menus .
I hate apple , but even I admit the ipod is worth the price... unless its the shuffle... that can die a horrible death

yes, it could fail as bad as teh xbox failed to generate revenue....

beta lost sony hundreds of millions and other ce companys millions along with the studios releasing movies , the lines built to produce the tapes and units .
Since its pre internet it will be very hard to find the proper info .
While not billions , its still alot of money considering that format is dead.
The xbox is hardly dead , we have a second revision to it and some of the billions you speak of include xbox live .
Of course I know argueing with you wont get very far since your extremely anti ms .
Things that are pre-internet are generally well documented anyway, and then the information is uploaded. That's a fairly lame excuse.
Coded-Dude

so you are saying xbox was a bigger failure then, in that it lost billions(not jsut hundreds of millions)
Since its pre internet it will be very hard to find the proper info .
So your now using your opinion to state facts eh.......tisk tisk
I am no more anti MS than you are anti Sony, whats your point?

How can you call the xbox a failure while its still being produced and updated with new hardware revisions ?
A failure is something that has been discontinued and not used anymore due to poor market penetration. Beta max is one of those .
xbox has been replaced with the xbox 360 , same brand name built upon the originals introduction .
Billions lost are only billions lost if xbox is canceled and ms never makes money on it .
Btw can you post links showing that Beta didn't loose money ? Tsks tsk , opinons as facts .

You still arguing that xbox FAILED to produce profits......come on dude, seriously.
So beta max failed to sell one unit? I fiond that hard to believe.
In fact I know people that bought: Beta Max, Laser Disc, & Dreamcasts.
(these all failed becasue they gave up, Ms did not give up they decided to throw more debt at teh "failing" console)
You can argue taht it didn't fail becasue they made a second generation verison,
but I could argue they only made the second generation verison becasue the first was
failing and MS was not qutie ready to jump off the gaming ship......
Again ,you sure do love to put words in peoples mouths(quote me or stfu), I never said it didn't fail or even that it lost profits, you used it as a reference to say it failed as miserably, or worse than xbox, which is a opinion(until you come up with some numbers).
What stake does MS have in xbox now? I thought they were licensing/selling it to 3rd parties.
THat is also not to make a profit, but to make up for those lost billions I was speaking of.

Could you clarify that?
It's a 30gig Ipod Dude...
And this deserves a WTF. Why? I'm using Window Media Player to try and copy the files to the Ipod but it's not working? Remember how u had to convert videos for them to be playable on your PSP? I'm asking if you have to do the same thing with videos and music if you don't have itunes or whateva...I don't get which part ur confused about man....
I honestly don't know if it's possible to use WMP... Can you not use an alternative? Why can't you use iTunes?

2. You CANNOT use Windows Media Player to add music to your iPod. You can use iTunes or WinAmp. Failing those two there are other free iPod synch applications online. GOOGLE IT.

Xbox is not done yet . Once again , xbox is not a singular product . It is not a type of bluray player that will be phased out in a year . It is a format like bluray , that will continue to update and expand like Playstation. Building a brand isn't allways cheap . Just look at your beloved apple. For years they sat around with 4% of the market and suddenly they are making gains .
So beta max failed to sell one unit? I fiond that hard to believe.
In fact I know people that bought: Beta Max, Laser Disc, & Dreamcasts.
(these all failed becasue they gave up, Ms did not give up they decided to throw more debt at teh "failing" console)
Heh , beta max and dreamcast were given up on because they were either a) dragging companys to bankruptcy , b) not selling at all c) were being sold by a bankrupt company
Laser disc never took off in a major way and was quickly forgoten with dvd
MS is building a brand with the xbox series . Its not a singular product anymore than the ipod is a singular product. Investments were made to build a brand and mistakes were made. But the xbox brand is doing better and selling well with many of the mistakes fixed along with huge investments paying off in big ways like xbox live .
