The only thing that interests me right now is the instant messenger capability and one screen is a touch screen. I know like nothing else about it, except that it has 2 screens.

Do you like games that break ground? Not just because nothing else has them but because they truly show a revolutionary way to play games.

This is like change digital to analog control on a more grand scale.

You've already played the PSP and don't even know it. Every game beofre it lead up to the games in the PSP, and all current consoles for that matter. Flashier graphics with the same stale, boring gameplay.
That is the PSP.

The DS takes what makes games 'fun' and adds new levels to it.
Remember back when you first started playing games? Everything was revolutionary to you. It was great. You were suprised each time something new came along. Here is a chance to relive that. Go back to a time when games meant fun. And still have a great eye candy.

The DS offers you the ooportunity to experience games again for the first time.

I am really intrigued by the dual screen style. The wireless capability is something that everyone in the world has been dreaming of since hearing about it. Of course, touch screen is always cool, no matter what its on. And the recently announced messenger will be a great addition.

Lol this is good stuff!!!

Ok so the touch screen aspect.
Do you think we'll be playing Seaman type games on it, or aquarium simulators.

Whats your ideas for the touch screen interface?

Viper

Mouse-like control. RTS games would be great.

Menus and options in real time.

weapons and aiming.

Do you se it influencing fighting games or such.

It would be great to do touch screen on games like Shining Force 3 or Final Fantasy Tactic.

That way you can just touch where you want them to move and they will move there. That way you can also touch the menues.

(how would the touch screen prevent fingerprints and what not?)

It's a stylus

PDA like.

I don't think a fighting game sould use the stylus much but real time replays could be done on screen two

Hmm

Space Chanel five could be interesting to have do the up down left right on the screen.

Puzzles games would be cool. Specially game like Chu Chu Rocket with wireless multiplayer mayhem.

From the way Viper talks about it , it sounds like it is gonna rock!!!!
A racing game would be cool with a back view that you could glance at rather then pressing a button to view it.

What has me most intrigued with the DS is actually not knowing what Nintendo and the developers that have taken notice will cook up, there's so many options to go with the DS. Maps, alternate views, controlling two players at once. But these seem meek to what can really be made.

What has me most excited, is actually the fact of not knowing. In recent times, I've been able to infer what games will be like. For example, "Oh, another GTA stylized game". I've noticed that this gets old fast. But the idea of not really having a clue as to what Nintendo and the like are doing is almost exhilerating. It can be assured that profound games will be able to make an appearance on the DS.

I'll definitely be getting this as long as it's under 150$. Knowing Nintendo, they wouldn't put the price of it to N-Gage standards.

The most obvious use for the touch screen is menu navigation. Easily transfer items from one menu to another.

Think about this. I game like Good vs Evil where you play the role of God. You could order your people around by poking them with the stylus. You could touch the thing you wanted them to do, and even grab them and drop them wherever you want.
Or even better, the Sims. You could have ultimate God abilities with a touch screen in the Sims.

If you're really expected to use the stylus during a game, are you expected to pick up it up, press something on the menu, then get back to the buttons? That would be too complicated - not to mention you'd be at a huge risk of losing the stylus unless it's tethered.

Perhaps they do plan on some finger action?

I sort of want this...but will it actually be worth it? If it is too expensive I won't get it...but even if it's not expensive...I just wonder if it will be worth it...I guess I'll have to see what games come out for it before I buy it.

Sorry bout the double post. Didnt see a reason to make a new thread for info on something that already has a thread.

The DS's touch screen will be one of its key features. IGN leaked information today from Nintendo about this feature. The screen will be placed between the "a" and "b" buttons of the handheld, in the center of the system. The second screen will be hinged directly above this screen.

This information provides some new insight. Its a hint that the DS will be a foldable system, hence the hinged top screen. It will probably be shaped much like the GBA SP, but will obviously have a different button configuration, since the "a" and "b" buttons will be on opposite sides of the system.

By pressing and dragging a stylus or finger on the screen, players will have more direct control over certain games than a control pad or action buttons can provide. Directing troops in a real-time strategy game, for example, with the screen above zoomed in for a closer 3D view of the action is an idea that is certainly doable on the Nintendo DS. Or, in a golf game, players can use the touch screen like a mouse control on the PC; drag a finger quickly forward on the lower screen to provide the power and accuracy of the swing. Another gameplay example: a Marble Madness or Super Monkey Ball design with the touch screen acting as the trackball as players maneuver the ball around the different hazards on the upper screen. After seeing the PSP's first game emo what are you thoughts on it and who is going to get both.

I will...

Severe Gamer

Having the stylus seems like a very intriguing idea. The two screens alone seemed good enough for me, but now with this new feature in the mix, it looks even better.

My thoughts on the PSP right now, aren't too good. There's several reasons why I'm not too into it. One of the most important reasons is that the price is said to be steep. I usually try and conserve my money, and spend it only on a must-have item. Not only that, but it doesn't seem to add anything new. The DS comes off as highly inventive, but the PSP comes off as run-of-the-mill.

Until the price, and uniqueness of the hand-held is shown, I won't be getting it. Sure, it may have excellent graphics, but I'm really not into how a game looks. Gameplay over graphics every single time. And once it shows that it's more then just eye-candy, offering true ingenuity instead of something to throw at consumers to make itself money, it doesn't look like I'll be purchasing it.

r33hash
03-26-2004, 06:19 PM
Well, you can bet that Nintendo will be able to come up with some ingenuity of their own. Wonder if they will try this new two screen stuff with any of their franchise monsters, like Mario or Metiod. It could work with either, since they both have a side scrolling and 3-d game. Makes ya think.

bobo_ess
03-28-2004, 03:44 AM
Maybe an Mario you can hurl a shell and control it on the stylus screen after you've thrown it. And on Metroid, you can contol missiles with it or something like that.

r33hash
04-10-2004, 07:32 PM
The DS should be about $199 or so. Thats what it will start at, at least. If sales arent what they expect, then it will prolly be because of the price. So, then they will drop the price a bit, Im sure.

The 10 reasons i dont want a PSP:
1.the cost
2.the battery life
3.it’ll sport an optical drive (which are easily damaged)
4.rather have a nintendo system
5.nintendo has 15 years of handheld experiance-Sony about 1-2 years
6.the fact of having to buy all of your CDs over again on the UMDs
7.the fact of having to buy all of your favorite DVDs on UMDs
8.i hate Sony
9.the analog stick will eventually ware out(like the PlayStation controllers do)
10.the fact of having to buy memory cards for it

If you have a memory stick, then you already have a PSP memory card. I believe they are the same thing.

I don't see why everyone here hates the PSP...it's an innovative handheld console, and even though it may not be better than the DS, its still an awesome looking handheld machine.

How does it innovate? Seriously?

AntiRealityHero
06-19-2004, 05:22 PM
How does it innovate you ask? Why there a tons of innovative things the PSP has innovated:

-Play movies on the go.. [err, maybe portable DVD players already did that]

But I'm sure there's more...

-Plays mp3s off of memory sticks.. [no.. I guess mp3 players can do that too]

-Unique mini-disc system.. [although.. didn't something else play games on mini-discs..? ]

-7.1 Channel Surround Sound.. [you know.. with 2 speakers.. ]

I think I got it

-PS2-like graphics in a handheld.. [It's so innovative it could burst]

-It's sleek and sexy design.. [because what's more innovative than a shell?]

Basically the most innovative thing the PSP does, is put everything else we've had before into one neat little $300+ package.

Doesn't that just scream innovative?

:uhh:

Michael

Its innovative because its the first handheld gaming system to feature:

-Analog stick
-Movie playback
-CDs instead of cartridges

Not to mention, it's got some good games heading to it. Face it guys, Nintendo has competition, because you know and I know that this thing will sell.

i wont repeat the stuff that has already been said. so here goes. a reason is because it feels like the first handheld that can truly take advantage of multiplayer games. u see i am one of those people who have friends that dont play video games (meaning that they suck compared to me and dont have their own GameBoys). now with the DS i could just sit in the middle of a wireless internet hotspot and smash (or be smashed by) someone at my favourite games.

You guys want to know why the DS has my attention and no the PSP? You older gamers will relate to this most.

Remember when you played a video game for the very first time? Remember the elation felt at experiencing something new for the first time? Remember the innovative gameplay mechanics that Nintendo always created? The experience left you in awe everytime you played it. Nintendo created uniqueness and that individuality was magical. The DS is poised to recapture that uniqueness once again, that innovativeness, that individuality......that magic.

So go ahead and play the same old thing you've been playing for the last 2 decades on the PSP......come this November, I'm going to experience video games for the first time...again.

Michael
06-28-2004, 06:45 PM
The fact that I don't like portables, and this managed to catch my attention and hold it for so long says as much. No system ever made me do that, none at all. I was even shocked to know that the design wasn't finished, and I wanted it in the plain grey package. I really don't choose one system over the other anymore, but I truly wanted this over the psp, before I even knew what was wrong with the psp. Many people keep saying, the 2 screens aren't innovative...get a pda for the touch screen and so on. All I can say is they ended up floored when I told them what it could do, without even bashing the psp, but it eventually came out in the end. Like viper said and so much more "I'm going to experiance video games for the first time...again", and what I have to add, "and so much more".
