I'm saying that I think that the real test of what Motorstorm is going to look like is the game demo at TGS in a couple of days. I think that will be the first time we really get to see a new build.

While my pants are still outside drying from first vewing of those pics I don't think they top the target render but damn they are amazing compared to anything I've ever seen generated in a video game.

Just simply amazing, my Sony spirit has awakened again. ^.^

Well, I am still with makeitlookreal. But , the game is steadily improving, it is around 85% pre-rendered footage. good this is that the killzone target rendere I never considered to be the PS3 gaming measuring stick. Motorstorm was. So the games are not even out yet, and they reachin this level. Hell, I would so buy the PS3 at $1000 without blinking, we are all in for a treat. And Killzone, the fasibility of devs reching the target render, is much better

I will give AO this much credit, MS has always been weak on the AA. But, it has gotten miles better with each iteration I see, so let time tell.

The aliasing in these latest shots is especially bad. If you look you can see it in almost every screenshot. Overall the game's improving but these jaggies mar an otherwise good looking game.

This game is going to be so awesome. I would love if their was some sort of team based game play where you would have a Blue team composed of 8 players and a Red team composed of another 8. Sort of like Nascar where you actually have racers that are on the same team and help each other out.

The flatout every man for himself races are gonna be hectic, which is awesome.

It looks very good and very fun. It has NOT yet reached it's target render but everything has gotten an upgrade to at least some extent since the last batch of screens and the last trailer. The vegetation is better, the dirt looks more real, and the textures look more realistic. There is still a good bit of jaggies going on but I think they won't be too bad in the actual game when it's moving.

I wouldn't go that far yoshaw. ;) But yeah, best looking racer by a mile. The lighting continues to impress the hell out of me, particularly the HDR for the dusk setting. Man oh man.

TGS 06: Motorstorm kicks up some dust
In the middle of the much sought out PlayStation 3 stand, Sony's forthcoming dirt racer, Motorstorm, was on show. We played through a couple of races on the single level demo to see how it handled.
By Phil Elliott, GameSpot UK
Posted Sep 21, 2006 10:32 pm PT

TOKYO--Right from the start the game is easy to get into. The controls are simple--right trigger is the gas, left trigger the brake and X gives you a nitro boost. The rest is just an adrenaline rush of dust, jumps, and wildly bouncing suspension, with the action seen from behind and slightly above the vehicle you're racing.

The level we played was situated atop a rocky outcrop, and although the track was pretty wide, with plenty of scope to choose your own favourite racing line, if you ran out of road you'd fall a long way. There were actually several ways to wipe out and falling off the side was just one. Flipping your vehicle is another, and that can be pretty easy as the terrain gets fairly wild, but also your opponents get pretty aggressive too. It's also possible to overheat your engine, and explode that way. Each time you use some boost, your temperature gauge rises. Leave the nitro alone for a while and it'll decrease, but the longer you hold it down, the more effective it is. Let the gauge go all the way to the top though and you're in trouble.

Thankfully, if you do wipe out it's not too bad, as you're set back on the track fairly quickly, and while you will lose time to your rivals, you should be able to make that up again within a lap or so. If you crash more than once or twice though, you'll definitely struggle to win, so it's a race of attrition as much as pure speed.

There are three types of vehicle to choose from, and there were twelve racers involved in the demo level. You can drive dune buggies or four-by-fours, or ride dirt bikes. Each type of vehicle has its own handling characteristics, and these can be both good and bad. For example, the dune buggies are low to the ground, can corner fairly nicely, but don't seem to take the bumps as well as a four-by-four. Bikes are generally quicker, but lighter so they jump higher and tend to slide further, which can be pretty dangerous at times. The four-by-fours on the other hand take the terrain well and are harder to flip, but don't seem as fast over the ground. The overall effect is that no vehicle type seems to have a big advantage, and you can choose the style that you most enjoy.

Certainly for the four-wheeled vehicles, suspension plays a big part, and you'll find that the direction you take a jump at can have serious repercussions for the next corner. In a way, the racing line become three dimensional, and the bouncing around you'll do as you hit bumps is pretty realistic. It feels like some hard work has gone into the physics engine for this game, and the result is a lot of fun.

As well as having destructible vehicles, some of the scenery can also be taken out. At one point we managed to drive a bike pretty hard into a fence, and of course wiped out. But the wooden panel also slowly collapsed after the impact, making it possible from then on to take a slightly different line into the corner. This opens up the potential for smashing your opponents into sections of scenery, and then reaping the subsequent benefits, but how far that goes it wasn't possible to test.

At one point in the lap there was a choice of routes, and while they didn't diverge massively, the variety was interesting. On the one hand you could take the high road, which demanded a tighter angle but looked safer, while the normal route meant jumping across a chasm. Most of the time it wasn't a problem, but lose momentum or get blocked at the crucial time and you're in some trouble.

Visually the game is fairly impressive, as you'd expect from a next-generation title. It doesn't have the clean lines of Project Gotham Racing 3, but the motion blurring, dustiness and shaky camera effects certainly give the game a good sensation of speed, especially when you hit the boost button. The screen always seems pretty busy, and the scenery is fairly detailed, but the frame rate was consistently high with no discernable slowdown.

Because of the noisy conditions of the show it wasn't really possible to hear if there was any music in the game, and while we could hear some of the louder sound effects, that was only for crashes and explosions. We'll fill in more details on Motorstorm nearer it's release date, in the meantime check out our previous coverage on the game.

Just watched the Motorstorm gameplay vid, Looks nice graphically(not the best) Gameplay looks alright but the speed still seems pretty slow, They really need to fix it more, The Cars bounce way to much when they go off an edge and hit the dirt, Car Models look pretty nice, Crashes look good and the ragdoll looks funny. My Opinion on it ;)

Motorstorm is of course at Sony's booth, with a brand new build and finally a new track to race on. This game is really beautiful, especially the lighting, but IMHO something's very wrong with the actual speed sensation.
Update: I've just received some very interesting informations. The build used today at the TGS is indeed faulty and too slow. A new fixed build should be available tomorrow and we will of course do our best to do some new videos! So that was the problem.

Dam you for getting my hopes up. I thought there would be rain and lightning in that video, but no it was the same old sunny weather.

section
09-23-2006, 11:10 PM
Regardless of the weather effects or not this title is hands down the best looking racer I've ever seen.

It doesn't even boil down to the lighting and excellent graphics for me here. Because no racer (arcade or simulator) has previously awed me with the feeling of mass, it's effect on sliding or crashing and car's suspension. Light vehicles act lightly, heavy ones are like mastodonts just crashing everything on their path.

So this should be a racing title full of adrenaline and battle feeling. And as far as I'm concerned this game could seriously change what racing for fun is all about.

The Lightning is absolutely fantastic!

Is there a video I haven't seen? Everyone keeps talking about lightning, but all the shots/videos I've seen are daytime and it's sunny.

The game looks incredible, but I do think it is still a little bit slow. I'm sure that won't matter much when your playing and there's 20 veicles bashing into each other, but it does stand out when watching the vids.

I,ve played this game at TGS. The visual looks awesome. The gameplay was fun. If you over use the turbo, your vehicle will explode ^^. The framerate wasn,t stable though. it runs around 25-30fps I think....

They will, in fact there was talk about a buggy build causing that at TGS. Hopefully whenever we get the all clear from Sony Evo Studios will fill all of us in on things like that when I write my motorstorm article. They told me it may take a little while because of how busy everyone involved with Sony is at TGS, but once we get permission we should get some great info from those guys. Keep an eye out. I will be sure to ask them questions like that. XBD, since you are such an excellent writer I'd like you to help me with the article.

TGS 2006 Game of the Show: Motorstorm

The reason is simple: it's the best looking game in action I've ever
seen running on a home console. Watching it on the screen feels like
you're right there, in a helicopter or something chasing behind this
off-road race. Everything moves the way it should; there's no weird
seams or particle effects disconnected from their source; the lighting
(and shadowing) looks natural. It creates a completely engrossing
effect.

The only limiting thing "maybe" about this game are that so far the various tracks look the same. I wouldn't worry about it. But its exciting to me. I wouldn't really want every vehical to use it but it could be exciting to use with the bikes and more nimble vehicals.

It's good to hear they are using the tilt function, because rumble is a real lost for this game IMO. I just think about feeling the bumps of off road via the rumble, kind of like the off road feel with the GT series from a force feedback perspective... Perhaps the use of tilt will be implemented so well that it will make up for lack of rumble. Only time will tell...

(Surprised I haven't seen this on Neogaf yet, they love this game)

New exclusive trailer: http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/6641

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?pager.offset=0&cId=3154216

When this year's Tokyo Game Show kicked off a couple weeks ago, the crowds immediately dove for the franchise titles -- Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy -- but by the end of the first day, a certain buzz started going around about another game at Sony's booth: MotorStorm. Thanks almost entirely to the stunning visuals, it quickly became the game that you had to see before you could leave Japan.

By the end of the show, the game impressed enough of us here to win 1UP's game of the show award, and established itself as the next big game to watch on PS3. So following TGS, we checked in with Pete Smith, senior producer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, to find out how far the visuals have come and learn more about features like online play and the tilt controller functions.

Head over to our screenshots page to check out exclusive new screens from the game, or our videos page to watch an exclusive new trailer, and read on to learn the latest information on the game.
Interview starts here:

1UP: Okay, so everyone knows about the E3 2005 target video by now. Are you relieved that you were finally able to show something at TGS that looked pretty close to what that video promised?

Pete Smith: From day one we knew that hitting the standard of the target video was going to be a challenge, however we created the movie as a representation of what we expected the final game to be. We're delighted we're delivering that, but we're not surprised. The movie delivered an intense piece of brutal racing, but it was non-interactive. Now you can actually pick up the pad and be a part of the action -- it reaches another level. We estimate the TGS demo is around 80% complete. The game has already progressed quite a bit since then.

1UP: Was there a certain moment in development when you realized, "Okay, we're on to something good with these graphics here?"

PS: Yes, I think there was, and it was around about E3 '06 time. Every game has that moment when everything just clicks. One day we got a new disc of MotorStorm, showed it to people around the office and the response was simply "Wow!" We had hardened, cynical Sony producers literally queuing out the door to play it. We've got a great team in Evolution Studios working on the game and the Rally games they have done for us have always been ahead of the curve in the graphics department, but that was PS2. When we realized just what the PS3 was capable of in the right hands we started to realize we had something very special.

1UP: When the game is 100% finished, how close do you think the visuals will be to that target video?

PS: I think we will be very close and in many places we'll surpass it. But to me it's about more than just the visuals the movie showed; it's the intensity of the action. You guys played the TGS demo so you know the action is already totally full-on. We're in the polishing and balancing phase now. This is always where the gameplay makes huge progress and that is definitely the case here. A game like MotorStorm with the variety of routes and vehicles needs this time to deliver an experience to match the visuals. The final game will definitely blow people away in terms of both visuals and gameplay.

1UP: Along those same lines, how close do you see the visuals in the TGS version matching up to those in the final game?

PS: We received a great response to the visuals at TGS, but we know there are improvements to come. The framerate was not what we wanted, but we've already addressed that, and that makes a massive difference not just to the visuals but to the whole game. We're working on improving particles, damage and cameras at the moment; all are critical to the brutal racing experience we want to show.

One thing I like in particular is the hi-def image quality MotorStorm has on the PS3. This doesn't look like some regurgitated PC game shoe-horned onto a console. We have warm textures, clean lines, and super-realistic models that look truly next-generation.

1UP: What do you think is the most impressive visual effect in the game? Anything that's been particularly challenging to overcome?

PS: The most challenging aspect has been the sheer amount of individual things we're trying to do with the game. With so many different vehicles in race, all spiting out particles, deforming the track and all throwing out junkyards worth of debris when hit, it's been a hell of a challenge even on PS3! But we knew we simply could not compromise in these key areas.

1UP: The game is known so much for its graphics at this point -- what would you say are the main gameplay features you want to get across that make MotorStorm a next-gen game as well?

PS: Our focus for MotorStorm was "brutal off-road racing in a chaotic environment." To deliver this we knew we needed loads of features -- great damage, physics, particles, tracks with many choices of route, and a big difference in handling for each vehicle, to name a few. However the key area was always going to be the Artificial Intelligence of the opponents.

We wanted to make the opponents feel real, and we weren't going to achieve this if they simply went off the best racing line and ignored you. The AI has been created to maximize the action happening around you and each driver knows what route he should take based on his vehicle. Importantly they also know what route drivers in different vehicles want to avoid and will try and knock you onto those routes at any opportunity. Bikes are agile and fast, but they want to avoid the muddy areas (where the Mud Pluggers thrive) at all costs. If you're a Bike, the other drivers will know you want to stay on the high ground and will do all they can to stop you getting there.

Each vehicle type knows how to respond to other vehicles. For example Big Rigs will try and take out Bikes and ATVs but won't be as aggressive towards Racing Trucks. In addition we also have many different race configurations per track. So in one race you might ride a Bike but stick to the high ground to avoid getting crushed by the big rigs in the mud below. Then if you play the same track again in a different configuration that only includes Bikes and more manageable ATV opponents, you will feel safer to get down and dirty.

On top of all this we are adding unique gameplay features such as taunts that can be used to create rivalries with other drivers. We're also offering different surface types and changing track conditions such as ripping a track into a muddy mess or taking out a bridge, and tracks will be strewn with debris from previous crashes. This all adds up to a hugely complex AI process. Fortunately as the player all you see is a hugely entertaining race where you are constantly kept in the thick of the action.

1UP: How big of a difference would you say playing in first-person makes? Is it like Project Gotham 3 where it's basically a necessity?

PS: As with all racing games first-person view gives the greatest sense of speed, but we're finding that everyone is choosing the third-person view. A race in MotorStorm is a battle from beginning to end; you need to be aware of everything going on around you if you're going to take the opportunities that arise to take out other drivers and avoid being taken out yourself. We left the first-person view in there for the nutters, but I know what view I'll be using when I race them online.

1UP: The TGS version of the game felt a bit slower than we expected it to. Is this part of your approach, or just the result of an incomplete TGS demo version?

PS: This is simply due to the demo being incomplete. We want every vehicle to feel fast and since TGS we have made improvements to framerate and tweaked the cameras and handling and already the game is much faster. I don't expect anyone to find the final game slow.

1UP: What kind of features can we look forward to with the game's online play?

PS: Online we're targeting somewhere between eight and 16 players, offering single races and various tournaments. We're also working on some cool modes, but we haven't locked them yet, so I can't give details. Obviously we'll have in game chat, lobbies, buddies, etc. Imagine a full-on multiplayer MotorStorm experience with you screaming at your mates to get out of the way and ramming rivals into a rock face and you'll get the idea.

1UP: [There have been conflicting reports on the use of the tilt controller.] Do you have plans to use the PS3's tilt controller as an option for steering in the game?

PS: The TGS demo actually works with the tilt pad as the primary control, [but] we've not yet decided whether to include this in the final game. Some people like it, but it's pretty tricky to stay in control when you're flying 'round the track at full speed. At the moment we're looking at in-air control with the tilt pad and a few other cool little surprises.

Great stuff in here. Each track has multiple pathways for different vehicles (bikes do better on high ground than in the mud), different surfaces, tracks will change (e.g. bridges get destroyed), surprises such as added in-air tilt controls, and eventually they aim to match the trailer in visuals, speed and chaos of the target trailer.

This is a must buy for me. Forget Gran Turismo and Forza, when I race a game, I want it to be chaotic and fun. This will do will while I'm waiting for Burnout 5 :)

Forget the trailer, I want the speed to be like this gif:

Best advice is those two games will keep you happy for weeks, so just order the sure fire winners, and everything else wait on reviews.

even video trailers would be great on TV's so they can be large and give you the feel of the game was actually running on your system, but to have them playble? that's a whole different experience.

MotorStorm Hands-on
Getting down 'n' dirty with PS3's off-road racer.
by Alex Simmons, IGN UK

UK, October 13, 2006 - When Sony brought a PS3 into IGN's Soho office in London we didn't just take the console for a test drive, we also climbed behind the wheel of the latest build of MotorStorm to give the mud-caked racer a thorough going over and (off)road-test its garage of turbo-charged gas-guzzlers to the limit.

Fresh from TGS, the version we got our driving glove-clad mitts on didn't include any of the game modes or multiplayer options expected in the finished game, just a single canyon track - the Raingod Mesa - and a handful of dirt racers to choose from. Out of the twelve vehicles on offer, four were bikes, ranging from a battered old World War II military motorcycle laden with saddlebags to a modern Dakar-style powerbike that's as fast as it is nimble. At the opposite end of the scale is a chunky 4x4 with truck-sized tyres and suspension cranked so high you could literally walk under the chassis without ducking. Making up the remainder of the dozen cars were a selection of souped-up dune buggies, classic rally cars and big muscles cars, with plenty more promised in the finished game.

Out on the track it's hard not to be impressed by the visual clout of MotorStorm. Admittedly it's not as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as the E3 trailer first shown a year and a half ago, but it's nearing that goal with every new build of the game released. The cars, for example, are extremely detailed, and not just on the surface. Every last inch of each dirt buster has been accurately modelled, from the axles and disc brakes underneath to the mechanics hidden under the bonnet. Choose the black and yellow Dakar rally car and the engine can be seen ticking over through the front grille, while the off-road buggy's oversized suspension dampers visibly flex and compress when you slam it round a corner.

However, it's not until you smash head-on into a boulder that you fully appreciate how much effort has gone into creating the vehicles. Clip another car and the bodywork crumples slightly, sending sparks flying and causing the bumper to become unhinged and hang by a thread. Sideswipe an obstacle and the damage is more evident, with doors flying off and parts of the body ripped from the chassis. Continue your drive of destruction and flames will flick from the stuttering engine, before the vehicle finally packs in and explodes, showering the screen with bits of piston, springs and tyres. In fact the explosions look so great they're almost worth crashing for, if only to sit back and watch as the gearbox spills a mass of cogs in glorious slow motion.

Coming first is naturally the aim of the game here though and while totalling your car only costs a couple of seconds, the only way to ease into the top three is by staying sharp and avoiding obstacles - which is not so easy when the circuit is littered with humps, bumps and boulders that all affect the way your car handles. Bikers are catapulted from their ride if they so much as clip an obstacle, while vehicles with soft suspension soak up many of the smaller bumps. On the flipside, motorbikes can squeeze through narrow gaps to shave precious seconds off a lap time while the buggy's floaty suspension - although great on straight runs - acts like a bouncy castle when landing a jump, causing the vehicle to flip if it's not controlled properly.

In addition to rocks and boulders, the Raingod Mesa track also features jumps, alternative routes and a banked curve that really lets you open up the accelerator. Angled at 45-degrees, a sheer drop lurks to one side meaning any car that enters the turn without enough speed slips off the edge and plummets to its mechanical doom below. Thankfully each car is kitted out with a nitro boost so a quick stab on the turbo button sends sparks out of the exhausts, catapulting the vehicle to top speed in a split second. Control it correctly and you'll glide around the curved bank, overtaking the pussies driving on the flat surface above, too chicken to tackle the angled corner. Overusing the turbo is dangerous though and holding boost for too long can cause the engine to overheat and explode. Similarly it makes cars more susceptible to damage and the slightest dink when maxing out the power almost always ends up with bits of car flying in every direction.

During a race, mud and dust kicks up onto the screen, making it harder to see where you're going if you're trailing another driver. It's not as obvious as it was in the demo at 2005's E3, but it's still a nice touch. Likewise, there wasn't much evidence of tyre ruts affecting the way your car handles, although that could be down to the hard stone surface of the track we raced on.

Having said that, the handling - even at this early stage - is pretty much spot on. The vehicles have a real sense of weight to them, so when you're driving side-by-side with enough car it really feels like you're duelling to get ahead. Similarly you can't help but wince when you shunt a bike from behind, tossing the rider from their saddle and then rolling over their limp body after they crunch to the ground in a tangle of broken limbs. Ouch.

While we were certainly impressed with the way MotorStorm plays and looks, there are a few niggles that caught our attention. Firstly, if you crash into a sign on the first lap it miraculously reappears undamaged on the following lap. Secondly, the camera takes a while to catch up on tight corners, so you're occasionally driving blind. The tilt controls are a little clumsy too, and while it's certainly possible to make it around the course by angling the pad to turn, it's not responsive enough and is unlikely to be the control system of choice for gamers looking to take gold.

But most importantly MotorStorm doesn't feel quite as fast as it should, at least at the moment. Sony has promised the speed in final game will be cranked up and, for the time being, playing in first-person increases the feeling of speed (and also rectifies any problems with a lagging camera), but there's no denying MotorStorm could do with just that little but more of a turbo boost.

MotorStorm Mouth Off (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/739/739157p1.html)

Producer of MotorStorm talks downloadable content, road rage and how the finished game will look as good as the original E3 trailer.
by Alex Simmons, IGN UK

UK, October 16, 2006 - Following last week's hands-on with the latest build of MotorStorm, IGN tracked down Simon Benson, producer at Evolutions Studios, to grill him over what gamers can expect to see in the final game.

IGN: The original MotorStorm E3 trailer looked incredible. How confident are you that the final version of the game will look as good as (or better than) that trailer?

Simon Benson: Obviously we are very proud of what we have achieved with the look of MotorStorm but, more significantly, we are proud of MotorStorm as a whole. The popularity of the trailer wasn't just down to the way it looked, but also the experience that it promised. We are confident that we have managed to translate the incredible moment-to-moment action of the original trailer into the game, which was by far the most challenging task. As for the visuals, people on forums are still looking at our latest screen shots and arguing over whether they are actually in-game shots or from another pre-rendered movie, so I guess that's the proof you're looking for.

IGN: You mentioned the latest build of MotorStorm is faster than the version we saw. What other improvements can we expect to see in the final game?

Simon Benson: Everything is now undergoing a major polish. You can expect more intelligent AI, which gets more brutal as the difficulty increases; a broader sense of contrast between stages, especially with the new lighting conditions; a refined and beautiful menu system; more speed and an incredible new vehicle select system. The 'death camera' system is being overhauled too so that players can enjoy their devastation to the full.

It's also worth remembering that on PS3, games continue to improve 'beyond the box' due to downloadable content and for MotorStorm, think bigger than just a few more cars and tracks, so the concept of 'final game' no longer really exists.

IGN: Aside from the cars and bikes in the TGS build of MS, what other vehicles will be playable in the game?

Simon Benson: Every type of vehicle you saw in the TGS demo is available to the player in the full version, so that's seven classes: 4X4s, bikes, big rigs, racing trucks, ATVs, rally cars and buggies. Each stage gives you a choice of vehicle and the challenge is to figure out how to win in that class against the others. The 'MotorStorm' events allow you to choose any class on a giant stage called The Grizzly. Plus the stages are crafted in such a way that each class can find better routes and exploit surface types that play to their strengths. We also have an AI matrix so that certain classes hate others, or are afraid of them, so ATVs are scared of trucks, but will brawl with bikers at any opportunity. Balancing all this has been a real challenge but has produced a truly unique racing genre.

IGN: What cool online services are you planning with game?

Simon Benson: We can't really say a lot right now, but imagine the brutal MotorStorm experience played out with your mates. What could be more fun than punching your best friend off his bike just before the finish line and watching him roll under the wheels of a big-rig driven by your brother - leaving you to take the gold! Also expect brand new tracks, vehicles, characters, game modes and possibly a few surprises available for download too.

IGN: Has the tilt functionality been implemented into the game as a serious control system or more a bit of fun?

Simon Benson: It did take a while to implement but it's more than just a trivial thing, you can get a lot out of it. Our feeling is that what we've done with tilt will be seen by some as the final MotorStorm challenge, whereas others will naturally adapt to it immediately. You know the way about half of gamers use the analogue stick and the other half use d-pad? We reckon that eventually it will be a third using the stick, a third favouring the pad and a third opting for tilt, so its inclusion is all about offering preferences. Besides, it'll be fun to see your mum trying to steer with it as they often tilt the pad anyway!

MotorStorm FINAL HANDS-ON (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/743/743898p1.html)

IGN gets its hands dirty with the finished Japanese version of PS3's hottest racer.
by Alex Simmons, IGN UK

UK, November 3, 2006 - Wow. We've just played through the final Japanese version of MotorStorm and we're still shaking from the experience. It's not hangover jitters either, rather the effect of adrenaline coursing through our veins after playing PS3's off-road epic on an eight-foot screen via a high-def projector. To say it looks awesome is an understatement: the earlier builds we've played looked impressive but now it's faster, more detailed and closer to the original E3 tech demo than we ever expected. In short it's the most impressive racing game we've seen in a long time and is a definite must-have come the launch of PlayStation 3.

But before we get carried away with the fabulously filthy fun that can be had in MotorStorm, let's start at the beginning. After a gloriously over-the-top intro sequence that talks of warriors doing battle in the desert (what!?) you're presented with a single game mode - Festival - that takes racers onto the off-road circuit in search of fame and glory. The racing game equivalent of a campaign mode, Festival is filled to bursting with 21 events - called tickets - although only three are accessible at the beginning. There are four races in each category, unlocked one-by-one by finishing in first, second or third.

Races are split into vehicle types rather than individual tracks so the same circuit can frequently appear in a single group of events. For example, there are three tracks in the In At The Deep End event - one set on the Raingod Mesa circuit, one on the Rock Hopper track and two on Coyote Rage - even though there are four races. However, only certain vehicles are eligible to compete in each race, with bikes, buggies, racing trucks and rally cars all grouped together rather than a free-for-all involving MotorStorm's entire garage of cars in one go.

That's not to say players are limited to a single vehicle. There are at least two to choose from for every race, albeit of the same type, and each available in multiple colours and designs. Although car-hungry gamers may feel cheated because they can't access every car right from the start, we like the way the cars are introduced gradually, given as a reward for winning races and earning points. What's more, each vehicle type handles very differently from the next, with heavy rigs gripping the track, ATVs bouncing around uncontrollably and rally cars sitting somewhere in the middle, so the staggered car roster helps players to gradually familiarise themselves subtle differences in handling.

The half-dozen tracks we played on are just as diverse as the vehicles too, not just in their design but also the different types of surface you race on. The Raingod Mesa track, which we covered in the last MotorStorm hands-on a couple of weeks ago, is located on top of a mountain and the hard stone surface provides fantastic grip, although boulders and sheer drops are lethally treacherous if you miss-time a jump or overdo it on the turbo.

A number of noticeable improvements have been made to the tracks since the last version of the game we saw, including an increased number of spectators (albeit static) cheering from the side, destructible scenery that stays destroyed throughout the entire race (opening up shortcuts in some cases) and huge video screens that display the race in real-time. Races take place at different times of the day too, with cars shining brightly under the dazzling midday sun or basked in red as the sun sets during early evening competitions.

Another track we've already road-tested, the Coyote Rage circuit, has also been given an overhaul. The loose dirt and mud affects the handling of cars much more than before, plus tyres ruts are much more evident, so much so the bloody great ditches carved out by big rigs can flip an ATV if it hits it at the wrong angle. Recovering from crashes in the mud is tougher too, with the wheels spinning and struggling for grip in the sloppy dirt.

The third track we tested, Dust Devil, is a much more open course with multiple routes snaking through rocks and other obstacles. Naturally some routes are safer than others, with wide sections of the track providing a danger-free - although lengthy - path through the desert. Shortcuts are much more hazardous, forcing drivers to squeeze through obstacles, which isn't easy when your buggy's pelting along at full whack.

The type of vehicle you're driving can affect the routes you take around the circuits, with heavy trucks capable of smashing through wrecked cars and advertising hoardings, while bikes must sneak through the gaps in between. Nowhere is this more evident than on the Rock Hopper track, which has multiple routes all the way around the circuit. Heavier vehicles are best off sticking to the low, undulating paths that stretch along the valleys, while buggies and bikes can take to air by leaping off jumps and speeding around banked curves that make up the upper section of the course. It's tremendous fun whatever you're driving, plus the speed has really been cranked up compared to previous versions of the game so gliding through the sky on a dirt bike really is an exhilarating blast you'll never forget.

The experience is further heightened by mud and dust that's kicked up off the ground, caking your windscreen in dirt. Get stuck behind a pack of buggies and it's almost impossible to see where you're going, especially if you switch to first-person. What's more, if you really want to admire MotorStorm's smorgasbord of next-gen effects, you can hit 'Start' at any time to freeze the action and zoom in, out and around your vehicle - Matrix-style. The balls-out racing action is perfectly complemented by the game's rib-shaking soundtrack too, with live tracks by Primal Scream, Slipknot, Nirvana and Kings of Leon thumping over the growl of revving engines.

Having spent a few hours caning cars, battering bikes and totalling trucks around some of most extreme courses we've seen in a racing game, we can happily report that MotorStorm really is shaping up to be the eye-meltingly fast racing epic it promised to be when it first debuted. It's fast, it looks incredible and, with almost a hundred race events to get stuck into, there's more than enough to keep speed freaks coming back for more. In fact the only feature missing was an online multiplayer mode, which apparently won't make it into the final Japanese game. However, it will make it into the US and European versions, along with downloadable content, so some things really are worth waiting for.

MotorStorm is complete... or almost :)

Damn, I may have to order the Japanese version.

I take it that SCEA is just going to sit on the game for a while.

Or could it be improved more? I think that seldom happens?

Edit:

Oops, did not read the end. No online mode. Guess thats why its still a bit off for a US launch.

Anxious to read more impressions on this close to final build.

However, it will not feature online mutiplayer (I guess they'll release a Japanese-only patch for that later), even though the US and European versions will feature that, as you can read at the end of the hands-on. I'd rather wait for the US version, which will be what MotorStorm is meant to be and maybe it'll be slightly more polished as well.

If the game has gone gold, why would they spend their time polishing the game? i think its just have to do with languages conversion AND online support.

My friend is importing the Japanese version at launch, so I'll have hands on impressions on the 16th.

Fine by me if it doesn't have online mode until the US release.

Looks like Sony didn't have online ready for launch like they said :( Oh well. As long as it's there in a month or two I'm fine!

although some Japanese games get a little polish by the time their Western versions are ready to ship, that doesn't guarantee that MS will have any notible differences between its versions. I think there will only be language and native online support. I also think it is a no brainer that the online option will be updated for the Japanes players. they could even have the online option in the menu, only it would be non-selectable.

in any case, glad to see the game being finished so soon. I thought I would wait four months for this baby. :)

PS. can someone tell me how a European developed game got to Japan first? O_o

I'm becoming more and more impressed w/ this game as time goes by. At first I didn't care, figuring it to be Sony's own Smuggler's Run. But after seeing all of the improvements it's gone through, I can't help but want it now.

I'm definitely getting this game at launch day!

I consider this good news and bad news. The good news is Sony is shaping up with one helluva launch line up. The bad news is I'm wondering how I'll find the time to play them all before Sony releases the next wave. With online and downloadable content, it's going to really prolong the value far greater than some of you might imagine.

I really don't know, I mean... it's a racing game, what else would there be? Unless later on you get some mode that includes weaponry...

No, no no. You're still not thinking big enough. Think bigger. BIGGER!
