We've got a PS3 - and here it is rubbing shoulders with Xbox 360 for the first time ever!

Created by Sony as an accurately proportioned replica, the PS3 model may be made entirely from wood, but it takes more than a cursory glance to realise that it's not the genuine article and gave us a good impression of what the Sony powerhouse will look like nestling next to our TV.

The unit is certainly big, although not drastically bigger than an Xbox 360. Positioned vertically side-by-side, the PS3 stands about an inch taller than its rival, while laying the two down horizontally shows that - at its highest point - PS3's convex curve makes PS3 about an inch fatter.

It's not the most beautiful looking beast, either. The underside is 'stacked' with a couple of different sized layers and the overhanging midriff gives the unit a slightly awkward, uncomfortable look. But, hey, PS2 was never going to win any beauty contests either.

So, it's no stunner, but that's never been an issue with consoles in the past. Hopefully, when PS3 finally arrives in November we'll be so blown away with killer games that we won't be concerned with the machines curves, lines and overall aesthetic merit.

Well, all I'll say is that I like the look of it a whole lot more than that of the 360.

That's not to say I wouldn't have much prefered the expected size of the E3 2005 model though.

The PS3's size really does not matter to me. If it is a quality console then if it's a little bulky that's not a negative in my opinion. Actually, it might be a tad on the large size, but it looks like it has an attractive design in my opinion. Also, we need to remember the unit is way smaller than a typical PC and for all the power the PS3 is going to pack you really won't find a smaller unit anywhere.

It's heavier than the original XBOX. This is going to be one big system. At least in a few years Sony will come out with the PSThree, and all our problems will be solved.

But seriously though, I was really expecting the PS3 to be way bigger than the 360 as some people at E3 made it seem like it was gigantic. The PS3 is only fatter than the 360, and slightly taller but it has a more futuristic and sexier looking design when its standing up(when it is layed down, that shit is ugly). I have seen the 360 in person, and it is quiet small so I am not worried. But since the PSU is built in, it doesn't really matter as the 360's HD-DVD drive and huge power brick is about a PS3 anyway. However, I do know that(it will happen) that huge 360 fanboys will be like ''OMG PS3 is teh huge Xbox ligterz Xbox 360 iz bterr suxerz.''

It's certainly kind of ironic that I used to call the original xbox a tank, but the PS3 ends up being even bigger...

Yes, exactly, like some car cd-players. It would just pull/eject your disc all by itself. A push for inserting and button for ejecting is required ofcourse ;)

I will say what I said before when I first saw the console: it didn't have to grow on me like the PS2 did. IMO, the PS3's design was an instant attraction. With the PS2, I could almost mistake the console for an amplifier.

Also, the final design (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/gallery.html) looks even better. By far the best looking design of the three, IMO.

well..i have to say that they both look like different types of models. the 360 is a slim model trying to suck in that air trying to be slim and the ps3 is a plus size model jus letting it all out and shine about it. ya know. i think they both look good though.

and are u guys sure that the PSU will be built into the PS3? both versions? cuz i had heard rumor that the brick was in.There's no doubt about it. In the back of the console you can see it has a "AC in" plug. To avoid unnecessary elaboration on the subject, it's as simple as this:

AC in = internal PSU
DC in = external PSU

For what it's worth, the old PS2 consoles have an "AC in" plug because they have an internal PSU as well.

I don't think Sony even made the thing. Why would they make a wood model of a unit they've already made out of the real materials. Going by the look of the rest of the comparisons (http://www.gamesradar.com/us/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?sectionId=1006&articleId=2006081195220737049&releaseId=20060314115917309058), the measurements aren't accurate to the official measurements released by Sony (which would make PS3 1.6cm longer and 1.5cm fatter than the 360, not an inch in both like the article states), also the power and eject buttons and the Sony symbol are all either different in scale or in a completely different position, also, why would GamesRadar get the model?

Heh, I got to see the wooden replica today in person. I went to this Sony Conference, that wasn't very good but alright, and they had it in a display case, whilst next to it a Sony Bravia was running videos of Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Genji and Getaway.

One of the best things they had there was a projector that did 4000x2000 resolution, pretty impressive, one of the lowlights, were the people there trying to tell me that 1080i was full HD resolution, and I corrected them, and they got all shitty.

Thankfully that was a free event, if that had cost money I would've been annoyed!

I agree with Wounding, I don't like the design of the PS3 and 360. Out of the two, the 360 does appear better. The PS3 is going to be a space-waster and I'll probably have to leave it in the living room while my Wii, Saturn and PS2 (and eventually 360) are inside my room. :)

PS3's design was chosen after few of the buildings in Kyoto(or was it Tokyo?). Ah whatever. It was modeled after them two buildings in Japan by a famous architecht. They look exactly like how PS3 is while standing vertical.

It is a sad fact that, as I said, AT LEAST half of the users on this forum don't venture outside it, unless it's to point out a flaw in a competing console or some sort of edge some PLAYSTATION branded product (apparently) has on everything else. Look at Crossbar's posts. Within the first 3 pages he has only posted in the PS3 and Tech Central forums. You might be thinking "Hey, the Tech Central isn't about Sony or the PLAYSTATION." You are right. But the thread he posted in was about a Sony product and his comments were about the PSP. You guys need to branch out. By reading this, I'm sure you're not aware that I edited my post before I saw your reply. Also, you aren't aware that before I finished editing my post, I was talking on the phone for a little while and I finished editing when the call was over. However, you post in a totally paranoid fashion for god knows why. Don't worry, I don't care about you, so I'll be fine ;)

On topic: as long as you're going to be looking at the screen and enjoying yourself, it's not the size or the look what matters the most when playing.

So, because I said that you edited after I posted, which I based off of the little " Last edited by VG Aficionado : Today at 02:34 AM." under your post and mine was at 2:32 A.M. and because I didn't know you were on the phone makes me misconstrued? That's ironic because you think that I "post in a totally paranoid fashion for god knows why." I literally LOLed at that.

If this is the best the PS3 forum has to offer, then stay here for all I care. But I know there are some people who can handle going outside of this forum.

On-topic: The PS3's odd shape isn't something that's easilly stackable for many people's entertainment areas.

You guys are so silly, yet you don't go to the Madhouse.

Why would you want to stack something on the console? If you don't mind me asking, how many consoles have you gone through since last generation?

None of the cartridge based consoles were stackable and the PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast and Gamecube all opened from the top. Only the Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS2 are consoles I can think off right off the top of my head that could possibly be stacked. *Shrugs* Just put the PS3 on top then if you can't put things on top of the PS3.

*Shrugs* Just put the PS3 on top then if you can't put things on top of the PS3.The solution is so obvious, yet people need to find more things to complain about. An alternative would be making it stand vertically.

Very true. Could cause some problem for people with small cabinets in their TV stands though. Ah memories, I used to play my Gamecube placed on the floor in front of the TV. And hey, GC was the smallest console out of the 3 on the market. LOL

So I don't really care anyway. Neither should anyone else ;)
