View Full Version : Question about PS3's media functionality...

OK-there might be an answer to this somewhere on the threads but it has proven difficult so here goes...The other day, I was downloading an episode of Naruto (avi. format) when I realized how clear it showed up on my screen. I was really excited about the clarity and decided to cancel the DVD's I was ordering and just download all the episodes from Limewire. However, I've noticed that Avi files are extremely large (average is 165MB) and with every episode I'm eating away at my HDD. So the plan is to burn 3 episodes at a time to a CD thus freeing up space on my HDD so my computer can run smoothly. Now the reason this is tide to the PS3-can I somehow store all these videos on my PS3's HDD? I know its supposed to a media player and all that stuff but just like when I had my PSP-I couldn't simply copy and drag music from my compter to PSP. U had to format music to work with PSP before the updates and even after some music files just won't work-and this was especially true for videos. (PSPvideo9 any1?) Is this the case for PS3? How is Linux different from windows and more important-will the media capablities for PS3 support most file formats? I had to get this out cuz right now-i have about 45 episodes of Naruto being transfered to CD. It would be amazing If I could simply store all these files somewhere and plug them up to the PS3 or better yet store them on the PS3 itself and watch my anime on a 720p Hi-def Screen!! Hell, it beats buying compilation DVD's right? Any help on the matter would be appreciated fellas...
I'd be surprised if you can't play any format on your PS3 except DivX of course. But that is just an opinion.

Just plug in your PS3 to the computer via USB, and then download all the files you want.
Off Topic: Limewire is awesome. But downloading porn can be dangerous as some are host that damage your computer.

Worst case with Linux & homebrew it will not be difficult to see Xvid/Divx playback.

WTF you think 165 avi can come near a dvd in IQ you must be joking . Also you think thoses 400 to 600mbs files that mark HD are really HD . A real HD anime file would be 4gbs for 24min eps @720P they are broardcast in mpeg ,but time get put on the net in what ever format there already compress to hell. Also if they let you do what you want with linux i expect to see a codec pack for ps3 in matter of a month allowing you to play all pc media files.
Plus buy some dvds ( yes i d\l fan subs but also have over 500 anime DVDs ) Give some mone back company that makes shows you like.

Copy that Gundam...But I'm not going to invest that heavily and buy every episode on DVD! And I wasn't saying that the animes were in Hi-def either. For a downloaded movie tho-I thought the quality was pretty good, and I was wondering how good it would look on a Hi-def TV set.
anyway-from the post, I gather it'll be pretty easy to just transfer all your music and video to PS3 once it's released right?

Omni, sounds like you need a new HDD. What do you have now?

I was watching Full Metal Alchemist on a 720p set (though it was hooked up to the PC through VGA) and it looked fantastic. Newer tv sets have much better colors.

^^this is way offtopic, but I was hoping for a real quick suggestion.
I've been looking at HDTV sets for awhile now, and they're rapidly coming down in price. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good TV set to invest in. I'm not going to have loads of money (esp. after the PS3 purchase), but I was thinking somewhere between a 27"-32" set. also, would u consider those worth it? For some sites suggest they aren't. because you're not getting the "True HD Experience". Just hoping for an idea. I don't want to waste a lot of your post space.

Omni, sounds like you need a new HDD. What do you have now? LOL... R u asking what TV or what size Hard-drive I've got Viper? Uh...I just got a Dell PC with 40GB of space (cuz 10 is already used when u first turn it on) and a 20GB back up. So the total package was like 80GB Harddrive Pentium 4 processor ect...But if its about the TV-then Im plannin on getting a 32in. 720p as soon as I can find one for a good $400 bucks...
Dont worry about it ded5850...any conversation that somehow goes back to PS3 is always good. And we know HDTV and Hi-definition is what the nextgen systems is all about so ask away man...

even when i try to watch downloaded vids on a dvd player or using a ps2 homebrew media player, even if it's a supported format, it never or rarely works cause there's just so many freakin codecs out there.

Thanks to several homebrew, I could play Divx, Xvid, AVC encoded videos under AVI, PMP and MKV containers on my PSP. On top of that I could also add subtitles(in any language) if I want to in one of them. Seeing how Sony is following suit with the firmware policy or lets say open-source policy(linux) with the PS3. I see no reason why the same homebrewers won't be active on it making all the worthwhile software.
I'd be really surprised if there is no homebrew for PS3 within a matter of months of its launch.

I can play virtually every format on my linux workstation.......

If I am going to watch something on a DVD player that I have downloaded from the internet, I usually burn it in DVD format using some DVD authoring software. It automomatically converts whatever codec/format it is currently into real DVD video format. On my slow computer though it usually takes about 4 hours for an entire movie. That is what I will be doing with the PS3, because I plan on getting a new computer a few weeks after I get my PS3.

if i code something thats about a gig AVI etc to DVD which is about 2.5 hours of video (not the best quality) but watchable it takes about 40 mins ill never abuse my computer again lol

^^The only problem I heard about that is that you really can't tell any diffrence between it and interlaced scan on anything less than 40".

The PS3 doesn't have a very big harddrive, so why not just stream to your PS3? PS3 has WiFi. It'll be pretty easy to access your PC harddrive from the PS3 with Linux. Beside, that saves you a lot of time instead of burning out everything.

I agree Red eyes-it will be time consuming-but once its on there-It's on there. Just power on, select videos and enjoy...
