Ok so i have a USB Switch that has a hub connected into it so i can have my ink printer and scanner hooked up to both computers at the same time. Well, the hub is automatic but the switch is manual and whenver i switch it to the second computer it always recognizes that the printer has been reconnected but when i switch back to the first computer it wont recognize that its reconnected unless i restart the computer.

What are the operating systems on both systems? If you say 98 or ME for one, that that is probably the system that will not see it untill reconnection.

They are both Windows XP. I dont know why it is doing this. I think i have always had this problem with this comp. whenver i plugged in a new USB device i had to restart it before it would recognize it.

2.6 GHZ Pent. 4 w/HT
512 MB RAM
120 GB HD
4 USB 2.0 ports on the back and 2 on the front

Ok so i looked up this problem and i think my problem may be that i could never download Service Pack 1 from Windows update on this comp because its using a downloaded version of XP pro. After i install that i can install this other patch for USB 2.0 devices. I will see if this works.

Sweet. I never thought to get an XP service pack 1 hack. So i got that off of kazza, changed the serial, downloaded the FULL version of the service pack since the express version couldnt connect to the server and then i installed that. I also looked for this problem online and found two drivers that fixed a similar problem, but you needed the service pack installed to install them. So i installed those also and i had to go into the device manager and tell it to find and install a driver for one of the USB host controllers and now it will recognize new hardware when i plug stuff into it :)

Downloaded version of windows?!?!?! Closed! ;)

This will require a revision to the posting rules in here. (If you have a "downloaded" version of the program, IE not the offical, then please post it!

Thank you for explaing the steps to the solution though.
