View Full Version : Untold Legends PS3 preview and vids

SOE stopped by today with a big fat PlayStation 3 development kit to show off the latest build of Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom. We saw several different environments, all three characters (though we can only talk about two for now), and got loads of details on multiplayer features and downloadable content. We also amassed a collection of direct feed videos for your viewing pleasure.

We played around with both the quick and acrobatic scout and the slow and beefy warrior. Attacks are handled by mixing three button combos of heavy and light strikes (X and square). The triangle button initiates grabs and throws while circle controls jumping. You will have to block… a lot. So get used to using the R1 button between combos. And once you build up some magic, combine L1 with any of the four face buttons to cast spells.

Enemies ranged from skeletons to spiky wolves to cow-headed brawlers. We also ran through such varied environments as the “Knott’s Berry Farm” village, a prosperous town with intricate brick work, and a watery cave crammed with massive mushrooms.

Dark Kingdom will have plenty of multiplayer options depending upon how many friends you have (with PS3s to boot). Single system co-op is limited to two players on one screen. The camera moves from the standard in-your-face view to more of a top down perspective. But if you’d like to bring the fight online, up to four players can hack and slash their way through dungeons together. And the best part is that everyone gets a separate screen so you won’t have to worry about being artificially reigned into an invisible rectangular box.

SOE wouldn’t talk about possible “entitlements” or whatever Sony decides to call their version of Microsoft’s achievements (if that ends up happening at all). But they did concede that they want to focus more on in-game rewards than external points. Hardcore players can strive to max out their character at level 50 or search for rare and powerful items, armor, and weapons.

The game features 20 levels and is expected to take between 12 and 18 hours to complete depending upon skill level and the size of your party. Potions have also been completely eliminated in favor of instant effect drops from monsters. Red orbs refill health, blue means mana, and gold doles out the cash money. In addition, players can save anywhere at any time – though they will be forced to respawn only at specific locations throughout the stages.

As far as downloadable content goes, SOE is already promising a free multiplayer deathmatch mode. But players with a little change left over after buying a PS3 can opt to pay for even more content. What if I said you could purchase a new fourth character class? Would that be something you’d be interested in? The developer also plans to add new story elements, stages, and maps for a price.

Untold Legends fans should have a lot to look forward to this November 17th. Dark Kingdom may not change the dungeon crawling formula all that much, but it sure plays smoothly and looks pretty.

It's certainly improved in terms of visuals, which has taught me to kept my mouth shut at times. As for the game itself... I don't knoooow Davey.

As a single player game.. best left to lil kids..
Multiplayer has potential if you play with 4 online friends..
Might be fun like Gauntlet was decades ago.. only if they introduced a Wizard & Elf.

*EDIT *

Just watched the scout Vid. Little happier by single player potential.
I feel that warrior character is way OTT.

I don't see anything different from what was shown in the last few threads on the game.

It still looks nice and shiny, but the engine under the hood still looks old and out of place (I'm referring to gameplay).

The game looks like it would make a stellar top-down dungeon crawler, but a fairly average (if not mediocre) 3rd-person action game.

The Co-op and multiplayer are the things that are gonna make this game worth the money definitely.

Jeez !! This is a game that is improving constantly ! I just watched the last vid and realized that they changed almost completely the gameplay :stunned:

Previous videos showed a boring gameplay and combos so unispired... but now it seems very quick and easy to play !

Very cool.

The game is shaping up fine. But what worries me about this game is why would they want to hold back a 4th character so they can microtransact it after the game is released. Why not include him/her on the disc?

Revealing such intentions now , ugh, that is so lame! I mean if they've already decided on such a thing meaning it is ready to be put online. But why not on the disc. I fking hate microtransactions. I hope gamers decide with their wallets that its not worth it.

I couldnt care less about the Warrior, the scout single handedly made me take a second look at the game.

I had fun with games like Champions of Norrath but they didnt really last past the first playthrough, mainly because of the slow nature of pretty much all the action. The Scouts speed makes the game look that much more appealing to me. It isnt on my buy list by any means, but it did creep back on to my "Keep An Eye On" list.

So I shouldn't critisize this game because most games are generic crap? Not very smart to me...

LOL, okay, okay, back on topic before the mods come knocking.

Oh and I'd buy this game if the A.I gets better and they mix the combos up. I might get it when it's dirt cheap to play some co-op though.

I can't believe someone would actually judge a game still in developemnt based on some screens and vids. Its the reason why the game and movie industry can deliver crap simply by mesmerizing the audience with flash and bang, and why once a "winning" formula is discovered, everybody follows along like nice little lemmings.

ddaryl

Well I agree the game has come along way, and is boasting some interesting visuals.

However spawning enemies in any type of adventure game is kind of a turn off, and so last gen. The gameplay seems to be pure hack and slash, which has some fun to it, but also gets mighty repetitive. I'd have to see some other forms of gameplay before I would spend 60 - 70 bucks for this one IMO.

I'm probably going to pass on Untold Legends myself.

Since you all are speaking about the gameplay again, maybe someone can answer my damn question from the last gamplay vid that was uploaded.

http://forums.e-mpire.com/showthread.php?t=59782

I'll just quote myself and since some of you believe this game looks fun, would you mind answering this question?

If you can provide a reasonable explanation as to why those enemies just stand there while being attacked, then please, explain it to me. With the main characters flipping and spinning around like something out of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon I would at least expect the enemies to be doing the same, or close or at least be able to dodge and block. At 3:43 minutes into the video, the AI is so stupid, it doesn't know how to get around a simple obstical like that well. It just keeps running forward until it is pushed around... We all talk about next gen physics and AI, but this game is completely missing them. Go back and look at Heavenly Sword and see if it played this bad. Kingdom Hearts 2's battle system is comparable. Did it play this bad? Was the AI this poor? I didn't think so. Do you?

It is easy to say go back and look at heavenly sword when the AI has nowhere to get stuck and serve the same purpose as UTL:DK's AI which is attack and block when necessary.

I say wait til they are finished before you crown Heavenly Sword AI king and Sacrifice UTL for it.

If it still sux... then you can chop its head off. Like I had to do with Perfect Dark Zero :susp:

I have not seen any blocking... and yes, there are items and things to get in the way of the enemies in heavenly sword if I recall correctly, barrels, tables, and the like (All of which make a wonderful presentation for the battle physics when thrown around and destroyed). Regardless, these enemies do nothing, absolutely nothing, but sit in front of you and attack, or just sit there period without doing anything. You still haven't explained why Kabbage. And no, I am not crowning heavenly sword king of AI, I am just saying that the battle system seems comparable and from what I have seen of the game, the enemies were not this slow and "stupid". Kingdom Hearts I and II both have a comparable battle system. Enemies dodged, blocked, paried, and had moves that at least made them somewhat able opponents. I saw none of this in this game.

When did say i was going to explain anything... people on this stupid forum seem to love putting words in peoples mouths.

Barrels thats are easly pushed right past.. and tables that I recall didnt come into play until Tameem destroyed it.

A hack and slash and pure action game with a deep combat system have comparable battle systems... sure.

And I see kingdom hearts work its way in somehow.... joy

I've never understood how a third download-able character would work in online multiplayer with other systems that don't have that character downloaded yet. Wouldn't the game require a patch for you to even see the new character on your system if you didn't buy the new character?
