View Full Version : Molyneux Calls Sony's PS3 Strategy Lazy
Say what you will about their respective hardware, there's no denying that Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are taking very different approaches to the next generation. And if you ask new Microsoft employee Peter Molyneux, he'll tell you that the three's approaches aren't equally effective.
"I have been through console wars before," Molyneux said in a recent interview with GameSpot, "but this one strikes me as particularly interesting. Nintendo has done a great job of convincing us that next gen is about game play rather than high-tech specs. Microsoft has done an incredible job of expanding games online and making them more mass market. Sony, in my view, seems it has been rather more lazy with their message."
As head of Fable and Black & White developer Lionhead, Molyneux has made most of his games for PC and, more recently, Microsoft's consoles. This made Microsoft's decision to buy Lionhead earlier this year that much more interesting.
Far from bringing down the quality of his team's games, though, Molyneux is confident that having Microsoft signing the cheques will let Lionhead carry on making the sort of games that brought it such acclaim.
"As an independent we were starting to find it increasingly difficult to continue the development of a game until it was done," Molyneux told GameSpot. "Working with hundreds of people, we found ourselves having to make some very tough decisions on the quality versus release-date front.
"What I can say for certain is that Microsoft wants us to create games which will get the whole world excited and to spend time on polishing a game till it shines, although in saying that, we still intend to be as professional as we can be."

LOL...well when u sell 100 million PS2's-u tend to get that way...LOL, but seriously tho-M$ isn't doing anything the PS3 isn't. In fact-if PS3 is 1upping the system in a few areas. I guess he has to support the consoles he works for-but I don't see how he says SOny's being lazy when the two systems are on the same boat?

Sony is not lazy at all, and are putting together a top notch system that will provide both stunningly realistic graphics and fantastic gameplay.
The PS3 is the total package in my opinion. It's going to have great games and great graphics.

Doesn't posting this article in the PS3 section scream out for a flame war against Microsoft?
That's just my take, I read it over and didn't care for his take on the next-gen war, but this seems like a blantant attempt to bash Microsoft and 360, don't you think Fats?

I just happen to be posting something I stumbled across on the Internet that's related to the PS3, nothing more. How you honestly think that this is a "blantant attempt to bash Microsoft and 360" I honestly don't know, it's quite the opposite if anything.

I liked Fable, although it was grossly over-hyped by the media.
Given Molyneux's affiliation this comes as no surprise and where as I would define Sony's "message" on the PS3 as many things lazy doesnt come to mind.

I think he's just suggesting that the extreme secrecy behind the PS3 is in fact due to them having nothing to say.
At the moment it's open-season for Sony snipers, but when Sony's beast is finally let off it's leash, it's gonna get vegeance on their asses.
All these naysayers who go out hunting for Sony, hoping to dine out on the carcass of the fallen giant, will be eating huge slices of humble pie instead.

His comments seem very vague. He goes in depth with Nintendo and Microsoft's approach, but when it comes to even recognizing Sony for even the smallest accomplishment, it's regurgitated as 'lazy'.
This isn't the first time someone from Microsoft has praised Nintendo and it's father company while playing down Sony. No surprises, no logic.

I don't see the purpose of posting this article.
What do you expect a MS business partner to say regarding the competition, his words hold no weight.
No good will come from this thread, it just promotes MS flaming... Peace

Well, just to be fair, they are if they don't have any competition. But as with any other competitor out there, the same can also be said.

Sony definitely dropped the ball at E3, while Microsoft and Nintendo came out way more popular in the public eye. I wouldn't be surpised that Sony's efforts would be thought kinda as lazy (even though that particular comment was seriously over emphasized in the article).
I don't agree necessarily, but I do understand.
Wow, I can't believe the only game most people know Peter Molyneux from is Fable...
He invented a whole genre of videogames, known as the "god games". He is definitely one of the most touted innovators in gaming. I just hope Lionhead's purchase by Microsoft doesn't keep his works from reaching the PS3.

Lionhead being owned by MS would DEFINITELY keep its games from reaching the PS3, that's why Molyneux is so eager to take potshots at Sony, not that Lionhead has been developing games on Playstation platforms lately. My question is ultimately whether being owned by MS will cause a priority switch from PC to the xbox360, PC gamers will be the ones with the most to lose as MS continues to cannibalize the PC market by relocating developers from PC to their console.

Sony had a great E3 in my eyes, they showed PSP/PS3 connectivity via F1 no other Hardware developer had anything like it.
They showed that Eye Toy game, Eye of Judgement which is truly innovative. They showed 1080p game in development, Heavenly Sword, MGS4, etc, etc.
The only thing that was messed up was the Kenji 2 because of the producers nerves being shot. Some people seem to think also that the GTHD went on too long, and the fact that Killzone was MIA but still a good showing.

If you want to equate laziness to not showing your hand until you're damn good and ready, then I would have to humbly disagree......
Sony defintaley did show some impressiveness at E3, but one negative PR move and every good deed gets burried. The consumers/analysts/critiques were upset with price, in fact the only people REALLY happy about the price were probably the competition. But I can't wait until TGS when Sony shows how "lazy" they have actually been this whole time. ;-]

Yea Dude you are right about the competition being happy that Sony gave them a chance. I know they all were holding their breath and waiting for Sony's conference, and when that price got announced they must've been like Whhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa??? Did Sony just drop the ball???

I agree...
People were complaining about not getting playable games (They Got them)
They complained about games not being realtime (They Got Real Time)
The complained about lack of online news (They got some)
They complained about price (They Got it, They Just Didnt like it)
That made everything else they got non-existant.

Lazy isn't exactly the best term to use. Lacking is more apt. At least when compared to what the others have presented thus far.
Say what you want about TGS or 'when the unleash the best' but up to this point, they are getting pounded by the media and masses for a reason right now.

I agree with you 100% man...But the reason for Sony being bashed is more than just the price-that just makes it easier to bash. At E3 Sony DID NOT show all those points u made anywhere close to their real potential. Only one game even used tilt! There show just wasn't polished and well put together-simple as that. Whether this was somewhat on purpose or not is irrevelant. And while they showed some impressive stuff, it wasn't anything that topped 360's games! PS3 simply put-didn't justify it's price at E3 to the consummer. People didn't see Killzone, MotorStorm wasn't anywhere close to it's E305 demo. Resistance didn't look better than Gears! The "cheap" version of the console is $500! The rumble for the controller is gone??! These are the reasons why the bashing is going on.
Don't get me wrong, I plan to put my money is Sony's pockets because I go out and get information for myself, and I'm confident that PS3 will be a great console. But to the public, SOny has to well-hype everyone up again...

More polished! Omni come on man, to tell the truth the only game that stuck in my head for the X360 is gears of war and that's because they have all the hype behind them. Their presentation didn't have more flash to me than Sony's.
Pricing is the media/consumer major gripe, and it's what stuck in our heads.

Omni....are you saying the MGS4 showing was less impressive than every 360 game showed? Or that Heavenly Sword wasn't a definate crowd pleaser as well? I mean they showed us alot, there weren't as many "Surprises" as we expected, and one(price), had a negative impact. The Media has taken that and run with it. Also remeber, they have a PS2 they wanted to sell as well(and they had good sales through the holidays), but the "theme" of TGS is The future of gaming so EXPECT PS3 to be THE center of attention.

Dude...I'm not saying PS3 games were inferior in any way! However, MGS4 wasn't playable-so u can't really compare a game with a trailer. Sony should've better displayed there games in a more timely fashion and they would've had a better overall conference.(Assassin's Creed?) THe biggest thing tho man, was compared to last E3-everyone was expecting to be Wowed again, and it just didn't happen like that. Sure the cons were blown outta porportion and some frustration was just do fans being impatient and wanting to see an amazing game on day 1. Sony stole the thunder from M$ last year, when they should've done it this year when 360 was already out...
@Old_Timer! Gears was the only game that stood out to me as well from the M$ camp, I don't know what's all the fuss about Bioshock, or Mass effect-these games really do nothing for me either (I was surprised by how much praise the multi-platform magazines and sites gave them!) But M$ knew they had a good game to show off. And that's exactly what they did. Sony should've focused on one or two games and really hyped them up. I would've gone with Heavenly Sword and Assassin's Creed.
When all is said and done tho-I'm not worried about whether PS3 will up to the hype or whateva cuz I browse, read and search the web and forums and I already know it'll be a great piece of hardware with great software. I'm just uneasy about the consumer reaction to PS3. I don't want all this potential to go to waste. This is my concern for PS3. Not if it's capable of being the most amazing system ever, but if consumers will let it...
